To ask when 'cake smashes' became a thing?

Loads of them popping up on Facebook at the moment, and I just don't get them. What's the point? When did it become a popular thing to do on a child's first birthday?

Cheshire - the pictures are amazing.

They really like all the fuss too... All the props, it's a lot of fun for them

Sparklingbrook · 12/02/2016 15:07

Cheshire I did BLW without realising. It was called 'bung all the food on the high chair tray and let them get on with it' when I did it many years ago. Grin

Crazypetlady · 12/02/2016 15:20

DS is one in june it's exciting and scary. Not sure what we are doing yet but I can't get worked up about parents wanting to celebrate and remember their dc's birthday with something fun. Food waste is a huge issue in this country and many rely on food banks but it isn't the fault of people doing cake smashes they aren't grabbing the ingredients from a food bank box.

SalemSaberhagen · 12/02/2016 15:26

Fedora how so? I noticed the trend of them on Facebook, and asked when they became popular, and asking the point of them.
I, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, couldn't care any less about what you do with your children.

It's a thing here in the US. I went to a 1 year old birthday party of parents at DDs class who we have started to get along with. They did the cake smash thing. What appalled me was there was no cake for anyone to eat! This is why these peolple are so darn thin. No wonder they need so much Prozac! I swear they would be far happier eating a slice of cake.

Well aren't you just lovely Smile if you didn't care, you wouldn't ask.

FedoraTheExplora · 12/02/2016 15:40

Not specifically about my children, but you obviously care about children doing it in general. Get it now? SmileSmileSmile

CheshireChat · 12/02/2016 15:42

Sparklingbrook that's the best bit about it, not that I had a choice as DS refused to be spoon fed until after 1.
Sorry Walshie123 didn't mean to sound arsey, I can imagine why the photos would be ace. I have plenty of photos with DS covered in food, why the heck wouldn't I?

MaybeIAmJustNotReasonable · 12/02/2016 15:49

It's called having fun. You can make the cakes with ingredients that total less than £5, and imo it's a good alternative to a normal cake which can cost more.
Lighten up people, it's fun

Walshie123 · 12/02/2016 15:51

The difference is, OP, you didn't just ask that.

You went on to say how vulgar and pointless they are, therefore, you care enough to have an opinion on them

ClarenceTheLion · 12/02/2016 16:03

I was going to say that I find it a bit daft, and it's just another unnecessary American thing that has made it's way over here, along with proms, baby showers, and decorating your house with a theme every few months (just so you can stick the pics on Instagram).

And then I remembered I just spent £65 on a piece of 70s Bagpuss memorabilia, so who am I to talk about what's unnecessary? Grin People can spend their money on whatever they like ultimately.

SalemSaberhagen · 12/02/2016 16:07

Why the wanky smiley faces fedora?

OP posts:
2rebecca · 12/02/2016 16:11

Never heard of it. Sounds like a waste of good cake so maybe why it's not caught on in Scotland (or the bit I socialise in)

limitedperiodonly · 12/02/2016 16:19

Cheer up OP. At least they aren't killing wildlife and wasting precious helium by releasing balloons or Chinese lanterns.

TheSnufflet · 12/02/2016 16:21

One more vote for vulgar and twatty. Why pay for the privilege of your kid messing up food in a studio when you could do it at home for free? Grin

OttiliaVonBCup · 12/02/2016 16:24

Blimey, if all you cake smashers think it's so wonderful and even educational then why do you feel the need to justify yourselves and call innocent cheese names?
Insecure?

Chill! And eat some cake.

steppedonlego · 12/02/2016 16:29

My daughter had a cake smash for her first birthday. I got a reduced cake the night before, and paid £20 for the shoot as it was a student photographer who was looking to expand her portfolio. My daughter loved it and we have some very cute photos.

I worked in a food bank for a year whilst I was on maternity leave, and still now donate £20-30 of groceries each month depending on how tight my budget is. I'm assuming those who are wringing their hands about food banks and waste are doing the same, and are completely not hypocritically complaining about a situation whilst doing nothing to remedy it.

If in your opinion that makes me a vulgar twat then so be it.

NCforthisshit · 12/02/2016 16:33

Asif the food police have come out because someone mentioned a baby smashing a cake Grin

FedoraTheExplora · 12/02/2016 16:42

Why the wanky smiley faces fedora?

Haha! No sufficient reply to the fact you obviously do care about the babies having fun on their birthdays, so you have to insult the smileys. You sound so bitter and angry. Did you get out of bed at the wrong side this morning? Or did you have a bad incident with a smashed cake once?

SmileSmileSmileSmileSmile

RaskolnikovsGarret · 12/02/2016 17:18

OP, don't dignify this latest bunch of posts with a reply. Still, this thread is a good lesson in that there are all sorts of people around, including those whose idea of fun is wasting food!

SalemSaberhagen · 12/02/2016 17:18

Fuck me, are you 12?

Bitter and angry about what? I asked what the point of them is, and when they became so popular. Hard to see where that translates to me caring deeply about them.

OP posts:
SalemSaberhagen · 12/02/2016 17:21

Yeah I'm done with it rask!

OP posts:
Abbinob · 12/02/2016 17:25

People like seeing babies enjoy good, I guess.
I wouldn't do it just cause I can't be bothered but it doesn't really bother me. I have loads of photos of DS with food all over his face/hair from attempts at eating, its just a more elaborate version of that really.

Walshie123 · 12/02/2016 17:32

Yeah, I love a good old waste.

Not wasted in a while though, but never mind DD's birthday is soon, I'll make sure to book her in for a Cake Smash.

Honestly, how is wasting food? It's not like if I didn't buy the custom cake, it would have gone to people who have to use food banks, would it?
