LadyIsabella Please accept my apologies I got the wrong end of the stick Blush
No excuse my fault entirely.

ScrambledSmegs · 09/02/2016 22:15

Have to admit that in the throes of pregnancy hormones I wanted to call DD2 Guinevere. The urge passed and DD2 got a slightly dull but nice name that DH chose.

Weirdly it was one name that DH didn't veto. He hated 'old lady' names but for some reason thought Guinevere was down with the kids Hmm

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 09/02/2016 22:16

Dd has friends called

Arthur
Bentley
Ivy
Celeste

Never seen these names on youngsters until the past few weeks.

Did see an Arthur when ds started infants, so he would be about 18 now.

Still trying to work out if Bentley is a boy or girl. I'd like to think boy, but really can't tell...

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 09/02/2016 22:18

We also know...

Rupert
Rufous
Romulus
Rafe
Ronald

And several

Jemima
Hugo
Joseph
Alastaire

Pipbin · 09/02/2016 22:22

I teach and have never taught an Olivia, more Jaydens than you can shake a stick at though.
I taught a Rudy and spent the whole year with the song in my head.

I can't stand 'creative' spellings of names.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 09/02/2016 22:27

I love 'hey there Delilah' by the plain white tees.

Thanks for reminding me about that.

Off to find iPod...

JasperDamerel · 09/02/2016 22:29

I usd to work with a Jolene. The first few days after she started, everyone with practically exploding with the effort of not singing.

MangosteenSoda · 09/02/2016 22:31

I taught an Algernon, but not in UK and it's his 'English name', so an unofficial extra name to his actual Chinese name. There are lots of baby Desmonds, Cyruses, Bernards etc here.

They sound positively mainstream compared to all of the Tarzans, Napoleons and Hamsters you meet Grin

My ds regularly plays with Doris, Otis, Moritz, Yellow... i also know a Zephaniah (Zeph) which suits him perfectly. A mix of all different nationalities here, so naming conventions are all different. I struggle to find the baby name forum outlandish compared to RL!

Lilyannapollyanna · 09/02/2016 22:35

Ooohhhh I've heard some good baby names from friends of friends
BABELYNN rendered me speechless.
As did Loveday.
And Neveah. I've also heard of a Nieevie-B Confused

GogoGobo · 09/02/2016 22:36

Algernon, Loki, Hunter and Cassius all in my son's class.... They are lovely kids and 3 are family names

ValiantMouse · 09/02/2016 22:37

I know a Reinette which I think is a lovely name.

If I had a baby girl, I'd call her Calliope.

SausageSmuggler · 09/02/2016 22:45

Massively outing myself here!
I have Dexter, Delilah (also known as Lilah) and Ophelia. Virtually everyone who we have come across compliments their names.

I've come across some very unusual names but the majority of the time thy have suited the child down to the ground.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 09/02/2016 22:46

That's fine sugar, we all misread tone in a hurry sometimes. Would you mind telling MNHQ that, so my post doesn't sit there having been apparently deleted for racism. Grin

LadyIsabella I have e mailed MNHQ to get your post reinstated, once again apologies.

elQuintoConyo · 09/02/2016 23:13

In my son's class there are: Bernard, Kevin, Santino, Minerva, Martina, Ilona, Iris, Adrian, Africa, Luke. All cool kids Grin

I love Persephone and have always known how to pronounce it, I thought everyone did Blush

DS has a dog's name, according to MN Wink

voodoolooloo · 09/02/2016 23:14

I always listen for Eunice (male) and Princess called in our assemblies. Both suit their names.
To the poster who mentioned Loveday. It's an old Cornish name and was on my list for my Dc. Vetoed by DH.
Mine have fairly unusual names. One is in the top 100, near the bottom half. The other is a marmite name. I've had a few comments but she's the only one in her class school with her name.
I was one of many 'Voodoo's' at school and I never wanted that for my kids.
Dc1's name is hyphenated. Not sure how I was allowed to join the site Grin

SaucyJack · 09/02/2016 23:18

I love naming kids too MrsD.

I wanted to call DD3 Boadiccea- but it was too ridiculous even for me.

Scoopmuckdizzy · 09/02/2016 23:21

There's a newborn baby girl local to me who is called Ryan. Never heard that name for a girl before!

There are A LOT of girls with -May -Mae or -Mai in their names around here. There's a trend for double barrel first names and they're all likely to be in the same school - calling the register will be like The Waltons.

Lots of more modern names here too- like Mason, Jaiden, Riley etc. and lots of Welsh names (we're in Wales).

Out of my DS names I thought DS2 would have the more common name (it's in the top 10 and it very traditional) than DS1 who has a name I'd never really heard a child called until he was born and suddenly they're everywhere!

Currently pregnant with DS3 and we think we have chosen a name which according to MN is common but is traditional so would be considered an old man's name around here.

If we were having a DD this time I would have loved Henrietta (Hetty).

dlwelly · 09/02/2016 23:27

I know of a Braxton.

At some point during her pregnancy someone must have told her about Braxton Hicks and she thought 'hmm, Braxton...'

Hmm
manicinsomniac · 10/02/2016 00:34

I can't remember all the names mentioned here but, of the ones I can, I know real life owners of:

Xanthe (my DD3), Ptolemy, Antigone, Lysander, Braxton, Athena, Ocean, Arthur, Jemima, Hugo, Iona, Luke, Solomon, Jayden, Hayden, Alistair, Rupert, Celeste, Evangeline, Dexter, Honey, Hector, Ophelia, Montgomery, Archie, Jude, Roxanne, Jenevieve, Elliot and Belen

Other unusual ones (not that I think all the above are unusual) I know include:

Rafi, Ferdi, Wilkie, Rocco, Chymme, Orlando, Cosmo, Lincoln, Deborah, Audrey, Douglas, Clyde, Josefina, Atlanta, Sydney, Dakota, Jaina, Christiana, Omiros, Hezekiah, Jogian, Sephora, Bertie, Quincy, Taryn, Ish, Guy, Mala, Spencer, Jolyon, Chantelle, Digby, Fenella, Fabia, Athene, Bertie, Billy, Howie, Coen, Tiffany, Jeremy, Tae, Roka, Ruan, Katinka, Anton, Jason, Gavin, Ashton, Ronan, Austin, Elina, Anastasia, Hailie, Kia, Indianna and Desiree

and probably a hundred others I can't think of right now. Nothing much raises my eyebrows any more. And so many of the more unusual names are absolutely beautiful.

3phase · 10/02/2016 05:42

I know a Xanthe, loads of Hugos, a Cordelia, a few Esmes, a Sylvie, loads of Margots, a Lucas, a Dexter, two Ottilie's, a Cosmo, quite a few Haydens, a Hector, zillions of Archies, Arthurs, an Olympia.....I don't think any of them are that unusual really. And we're in rural Somerset!

Naveah is the only name that I've ever thought wtaf about. I've heard it 3 times now and each time the parent has said "it's heaven spelled backwards" after they've introduced their child....I don't get it at all but each to their own.

I would love to meet a "Princess". My DD4 would be so incredibly jealous.

Verity23 · 10/02/2016 06:13

I have an Elliot, didn't realise it was weird. There's another Elliot at his preschool (which he thinks is great) so I don't think it's that uncommon.

Koopz · 10/02/2016 06:13

I know a Persephone, she also gets call Sephy. V.cute.

My next door neighbours daughter is called nevaeh, when I first met her the mum told me her name, I said I'd never heard it before and it was pretty. She says 'oh it's heaven spelt backwards' put me right off!
