I totally agree mrsDV some of the things said are outrageous. I have also been told if i name my child x they deserve to get bullied and beaten up. That i will only have myself to blame if they can't get a 'normal' job as anyone looking at a cv with their name on it would think they were a posh prat.

I don't care if people don't like my child's name (but they are clearly wrong as both are stupendous Grin ) but when they say the deserve physical violence against them and it would be my fault then yes, it does upset me.

I seem to remember you have a Rudy? (sorry if i am wrong) I absolutely love that name. I always wanted a little Gertrude and to call her Rudy.

sugar21 · 09/02/2016 19:51

I've got 3 first names and a hyphenated last name. My first name has a series on tv, my second name is very naice, my third name was a character on a very popular American tv series and my surname is very very naice. At school the other kids made fun of my name and I was called a nn of my many initials.
My Mum insisted that all my names were beautiful but I hate them so I have a Zoë and a Daisy (decd)

MrsKoala · 09/02/2016 19:57

Conrad and Constantine were on my list with DS1 but DH vetoed them, along with Valentine. The bastard. He wanted Victor or Ender. We both vetoed everything the other chose till about the week before ds1 was due and then we agreed on 1 name and that was it. Same with DS2, we could only agree on one name about a week before he was born.

I spent both pregnancies worried our baby would be nameless for ever more.
I didn't think either suited their names at all, but they have really grown into them and i can't imagine them being anything else - altho oddly i can imagine them suiting each others names too. They are quite similar in style i suppose and quite effeminate.

ollieplimsoles · 09/02/2016 19:58

I have a Penelope, we call her Penny, but we wanted her to have a choice when she's older, she might want to go by her full name.

I got absolutely flamed when I was pregnant when I wanted opinions on what I would call baby if I had a boy on the baby name board. A few liked it, others were just nasty.

I hate it when people say 'oh he/she will be bullied at school' well people should teach their kids not to make fun of peoples names then.

I'm still using the name of I have I boy next

Crazypetlady · 09/02/2016 19:58

Maybe they go by other names DS has an unusual but nice name I have had no shocked looks or comments I think people will have different tastes but children may not be as impressed as their parents with the names.

I didn't realise having an opinion on a name was also frowned on. Names generally come with context, meaning and often a history. It's one of the reasons I find names (and choice of names) fascinating. I don't think expressing surprise at a name is necessarily offensive. Some names do make me wonder.

I've seen my kids names referred on threads as classic, boring, beautiful, of its time, traditional, timeless. I find them all beautiful (or I wouldn't have chosen them) but I do accept beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The vitriol on MN against Jayden never cease to amaze me. I have yet to see if it extends to the real world and my own one is destined to be jobless forever as his CV is thrown in the bin. He's still at college atm, so I guess I'll find out in the next couple of years.

And then my youngests name has been described as "try hard" and "pretentious" on here. I went from being a huge chav (DS2s name also gets slated) to MC (next 2 have naice biblical names, not too popular, not too rare) too pretentious!

I'm so confused about what I am!

Or maybe I just chose names I like - I wasn't being pretentious I just liked his name - just like I liked all the others.

And he was so nearly Ptolemy! Grin

People on MN set way too.much store by names IMO. In my experience people IRL really don't care that much. My boss is a very successful very senior level executive with a name that always gets panned in here as being unsuitable for a "grown woman" (ie doesn't pass the high court judge test).

Sugar get a grip. I said his name has reminded me of a favourite song, and complained with tongue in cheek that I'll be singing it all evening. Reminding people of songs is not actually a bad thing, with the possible exception of Delilah or Roxanne.

I currently teach a Tyberius and a Hector. I've very quickly adjusted. Both great kids.

I LOVE Rudy. I wanted it on our list but DH didn't love it and we agreed to have only names we both loved. It's an underused classic in my personal opinion.

MrsKoala · 09/02/2016 21:06

Personally i like a 'Sunday best' name, but have no problem with abbreviations as a persons full and proper name. I have had the opposite reaction, everyone bangs on about why did i bother calling ds2 x when i call him an abbreviation etc or my name which is a long name but i am called a one syllable abbreviation, apparently that is ridiculous.

Also calling abbreviations NNs so as to belittle them and make out they aren't your 'real' name is one of my pet hates. Tom is NOT a NN. Buttons is a NN. Tom, if your name is Thomas is an abbreviation and still your 'real' name. Likewise if you are Tom on your BC. These are REAL names.

SalemSaberhagen · 09/02/2016 21:08

Think you've misunderstood there sugar.

DD is Eliza. People still manage to misspell and mispronounce it Hmm

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 09/02/2016 21:09
