To cut my hair off even though it will look bloody awful

Thanks to a succession of hairdresser with a penchant for 'framing my face' I have messy hair all different lengths. A new system at work where my picture has to be taken upon entering the building has made me realise it looks worse than I thought.

I hate it but I think the only way to address it is to cut it the same length as the shorter layer - which is short.

So should I do this and just really hope it grows fast? Or if there another way? Please let there be another way ...

I just hate them to be honest: not on other people but I think they look awful on me.

Now what should be a nice simple cut is - a mess!

We have the same hair. Truly. Potatoes of the world unite.

Do they try and convince you to just have it feathered a bit? Just some light layers? Just a frame for your show quality King Edward? Bastards.

iMatter · 09/02/2016 17:08

A hairdresser did this to me too. It looked OK all floofed up in the hairdressers but after that, hideous.

I have grown the ridiculous, pointless layers out and am back to my old swishy self.

I agree with pp - have an inch or so off, nothing off the layers and keep going back every 6 weeks.

notsohappyyetmuchhappier · 09/02/2016 17:09

They do!

We are long lost sisters!

I'll try just cutting an inch off the bottom then ladies - thanks!

I think it looks really nice! Honestly and I'm pretty pass remarkable.

I was expecting something like Road Stewart in his heyday

Kenworthington · 09/02/2016 17:15

I think it's quite nice and its a lovely colour. I would peehaps just have it sliced off at the bottom as you suggested just to tidy it a bit. It's nowhere near as short as I thought it would be

notsohappyyetmuchhappier · 09/02/2016 17:15

Gobbolino that's lovely of you :) but when you can see my face rod Stewart is about right! Grin

Your hair doesn't look bad at all! I'm sure if you just get the unwanted long bit trimmed a bit, not right off into a bob or anything, if you're not happy with it just now, but honestly I think your hair is nice.

bornwithaplasticspoon · 09/02/2016 17:19

I had an awful cut once. I have frizz prone hair and the hairdresser used those thinning sheers and it was a frizzy mess until I could grow it out.

diddl · 09/02/2016 17:19

Looks good to me as well.

Certainly can't see a plethora of layers!

But I agree, getan inch or so off the length & then just keep doing that as it grows until you have got rid of trhe layers that you don'twant.

BabyGanoush · 09/02/2016 17:19

that's not bad, OP, really

Take an inch off, tell hair dresser you want the hair to look a bit thicker.

notsohappyyetmuchhappier · 09/02/2016 17:20

Thanks ladies: it does look pretty dreadful in the work camera!

Wardrobespierre · 09/02/2016 17:20

An inch off would do. Don't take more length away. It'll grow out fine until the next Helena Hackjob thinks she knows best.

BaronessBomburst · 09/02/2016 17:21

It wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting!
And the colour is lovely.
I totally agree with the advice to just trim an inch off the bottom and leave the rest.
How do you feel about lipstick?
That blonde is crying out for a glamorous red!

notsohappyyetmuchhappier · 09/02/2016 17:23

My skin is really swallow and I have tiny lips! I don't wear any makeup other than foundation and mascara. Sometimes mascara ...

Vinorosso74 · 09/02/2016 17:25

I think it looks good! A decent hairdresser will do a free consultation before cutting so maybe try that approach and avoid the Toni and Guy/Rush salons who love to do the layers thing.
I had a succession of hairdressers cut layers in my long fine hair which made it look straggly so got it chopped off, grew it, got fed up and now have a shortish bob but do miss having long hair. I can't win!

Wardrobespierre · 09/02/2016 17:26

Were we separated at birth?! Tiny lips here too. No make up. Lipstick on me is like a hairband on a bald baby. No need to draw attention to it.

notsohappyyetmuchhappier · 09/02/2016 17:27

I have never heard that comparison before wardrobe but it's bang on!

OP posts:
ALaughAMinute · 09/02/2016 17:31

Just seen your picture and think it looks really nice!! If you don't like the layers grow them out, but for now I would just have an inch or so chopped of the bottom.

Jbck · 09/02/2016 17:38

But hairbands on bald babies are all the rage Grin
It honestly is not as bad as you think, a bit of an even up and it'll look fine.

Good hairdresser, proper cut and light trims till it grows in a bit and maybe a visit to a good make up artist. I always feel underdone unless I have mascara and lippy, I have the piggy eyes to your thin lips!

JassyRadlett · 09/02/2016 17:40

Oh lovey! That is not NEARLY as bad as I was imagining. My prescription is the same as everyone else's, and maybe get the top layer softened a wee bit. Then lots of styling paste while it's growing out.

And after that a nice blunt bob.

OnceUponATimeIWasSkinny · 09/02/2016 17:48

I think you've got lovely hair. Mine is thick and frizzy. I always admire hair like yours. Honestly, it's lovely.

notsohappyyetmuchhappier · 09/02/2016 17:49

Well, you've all made my day - thanks! :)

I had layers once (and still do) but the best way I found was to pick the length I wanted and have them ONLY cut the hair to there. None of this "feathering" crap.

I explained to the hairdresser that I wanted LONG layers (if any at all) and the shortest I wanted those layers was shoulder length. It will take some time but all you want is the shortest layer trimmed of the smallest amount to remove the split end and giving it time to grow out.
