Working from home whilst ill

This is more of a rant than AIBU but why is it when employees are ill they can't work from home yet as soon as a manger starts getting the sniffles etc they email everyone saying that they are ill and that they will be working from home?

I agree in most cases that if you are too ill to come in then you can't work from home, however with the managers it reeks of double standards and it just ends up pissing other people off as they are the ones who have sickness absences not the managers.

OP - when you have questioned this with your manager or HR, what reason is given why you can't WFH?

Excellent news. Thanks rooner I'll stop trying to give out potentially useful information in between throwing up.

I'm not sure there's much mileage in the "unfair to have one rule for them and a different one for us" argument.

Managers have different job descriptions, different responsibilities, they might have done the time in the trenches before promotion.

Presumably you don't object to them being paid more than you by virtue of being managers? Why should their terms and conditions of employment be otherwise identical to yours?

Re redundancy, tbh, if all the managers do some WFH when they are ill, then very few of them will ever have some sickness.

If they need to make some managers redundant (and they do will do if they need to drastically cut the workforce) they will just use other criteria, such as effectiveness or the one who stays the longest at work, in which WFH isn't going to be in their favour

If you live 35 miles from work that is your issue and not your employer's.

I did think that was a bit rude, Utter.

You're only taking a sick day (or should only be taking a sick day) if you are too ill to actually do your job, regardless of where you are

I'm confused about this. Isn't that exactly the OP's argument? That she could sometimes WFH if she's feeling less than 100%, as the managers are allowed to do, rather than use up a sick day?

I am an employer. I am very happy when people offer to work from home when not well enough for their commute. HTH!
