To celebrate karma in all it's splendid glory?

Horrible person.

Thought they were going to have a big win tonight.

Lost.

Surely champagne is not unreasonable in these circumstances?

Eh? Who's a horrible person?

BillSykesDog · 06/02/2016 13:33

You've already uncorked it by the sound of things OP!

MidniteScribbler · 06/02/2016 13:34

There's a very horrible person involved in the same sport I am in. They thought they were going to be a big winner tonight at the event. Brought a cheer squad, had a party ready to go to celebrate their perceived awesomeness. Then they got beaten.

I'm celebrating karma and about to start on the champagne. (Promise that I haven't had any yet).

Bottoms up! Wine

“The Principle of Karma requires that the experiences of the individual being, based on his actions during the lifetime, are imprinted in the subtle body, which will therefore have to possess some organized structure of fine matter as mental state within it, and will accordingly be impelled to move to specific locations for rebirth. The principle of Karma is fundamentally based on this very concept that the deeds of today shape the future events for man – the most intelligent of beings is gifted with the discriminating ability in addition to the instinctive habits that all other creatures possess.” –

Anniegetyourgun · 06/02/2016 14:02

YABU unless you're the one who beat them. Oh ok then, you can open the champagne if it is a member of your family who achieved the deed. Just watching someone else does not justify champagne.

Not, of course, that you need to justify champagne Envy

Birdsgottafly · 06/02/2016 14:05

Have they done any harm to you?

If not, then I think it's pathetic to celebrate the misfortune of others.

So they haven't got a winners party to go to, just a commiseration party, same horse, different jockey.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 06/02/2016 14:05

I'd say its more a case of egg on their face and looking like a first class nobber rather than karma.

MidniteScribbler · 06/02/2016 14:12

I didn't beat them (I wasn't entered) but a new competitor who is someone I've been training and mentoring did. The fact that this new person did so well means more to me than anything else.

Have they done any harm to you?

Yes. A lot of it.

blueshoes · 06/02/2016 14:48

If you did not beat them, then it is not karma but schadenfreude.

Oysterbabe · 06/02/2016 15:12

I'm a big believer in karma. That's why whenever anything really bad and unfair happens to me I always go out and push over an old lady just to even the score.

notquitehuman · 06/02/2016 15:14

Why don't you go post 'karma is a bitch innit!!!!' on Facebook. I'm sure the person will see it and feel mighty silly.

CaptainCrunch · 06/02/2016 15:57

Karma is nonsense, agree with pp who said it's Schadenfreude.

theycallmemellojello · 06/02/2016 16:11

Isn't it bad karma to revel in others' misfortunes?

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 06/02/2016 16:20

"Brought a cheer squad, had a party ready to go to celebrate their perceived awesomeness."

Yep, I'd be quietly enjoying their disappointment. It's one thing to be smugly confident and quite another to rope in your own "cheer squad". What a pillock!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 06/02/2016 16:23

Enjoy your moment Midnight! We've all been there yes, even the santimonious arses on this thread . Chin chin!

Osolea · 06/02/2016 16:28

It's not great for your karma if you are enjoying someone else's misfortune either you know.

But, even if you did need a reason to drink champagne, then you have it for the person that did win. Enjoy that instead.

ProjectPerfect · 06/02/2016 16:28

Karma is bollocks but even so I see nothing wrong with the OP who has clearly spent time having to deal with an arsehole allowing herself the satisfaction of toasting his misfortune with a glass of fizz.

Op ignore the idiots who'll spend the next six hours telling you how you're pathetic to celebrate their failure. Enjoy you drink Wine

Grin You should take up a new career in evil greetings cards.

hefzi · 06/02/2016 16:45

Oysterbabe Grin Grin Grin

OP, I don't think "karma" strictly speaking really fits the oft-cited western interpretation of someone getting their just desserts, though. It's also a bit unsporting (to say the least) to be anything other than gracious - in victory or defeat Hmm

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 06/02/2016 16:47

I would, too.

Cheer squad...what a tool.

MidniteScribbler · 06/02/2016 16:48

It's not really misfortune. It's not a case of losing your wallet on the train. It's a competition and every entrant has a chance of winning. This person has done their share of winning over the years, as we all have, it's one of those events where results get shared around, not a usual winner every time. I've beaten her, she's beaten me, others have beaten both of us.

What annoyed me was the presumption that she would win tonight. She had some people travel (some of them from over an hour away) to be there to 'celebrate' her planned win. Champagne was ready to be popped on the sidelines. There was a presumption of a win which really annoyed me. In this sport, it's judges opinion, so you can never assume anything.

After she lost, instead of being a good sport, she chose to badmouth everyone that she thought might be responsible for her loss. The judge, the steward, other competitors, me. She threw a rather large hissy fit over her loss and was very ungracious in being beaten by someone she thought of as a lesser (ie newer) competitor.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 06/02/2016 18:01

I am a great believer in Karma BTW
