to ask if anyone's fallen pregnant while bf'ing before getting their period back?

It's got to be pretty unlikely, right?

DP and I DTD on Thursday for the first time in months. Our baby has dropped feeds until bedtime and during the night only remain and I haven't yet had a period. Last week I felt crampy and thought it might be due but nothing has occurred. Now since DTD I feel crampy on and off, have lower back pain and (sorry for TMI) lots of snot like cervical mucus. All of which have been the first signs of pregnancy for me with previous DC.

I just feel 'full' in my tummy; I can't explain it. Surely pregnancy is highly unlikely in these circumstances? Has anyone here fallen pregnant before their period returned?

I am still bfing my 13m old, I am back to work so am not feeding during the day (3 days per week). No sign of period yet.

I assume those who have fallen pregnant were unlucky enough to have had sex during their first ovulation before they were just about to have their first period?

HackerFucker22 · 03/02/2016 06:35

Eta we barely have sex as 2 kids 1 who cosleeps is contraception enough!

BalloonSlayer · 03/02/2016 06:53

Of course it's possible to get pregnant before your period comes back. A period signals that the last cycle of ovulation hasn't resulted in a pregnancy. So you won't get a period until you have ovulated and that egg is not fertilised. If it does get fertilised then of course you are pregnant without your periods coming back.

(Teenage girls also find this concept hard to understand as they think it's not possible to get pregnant before you've started your periods. . . well if your periods were going to start THIS month, then yes it is completely possible, but you won't know until you are a) pregnant or b) get your period.)

Me with DC4, DC3 was 7 months and I messed up the dates of my depo injection.

SashaFierce99 · 03/02/2016 07:16

Shit, it looks like I had better test then. How soon do you think I could get an accurate result?

I don't get why people think it can't happen before periods start.

To have a period, you have to have gone through the lining thickening. Before you see the period.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 03/02/2016 07:18

Yep second pregnancy I was still ebf dd who was 16 weeks old at the time. Didn't go well but I was 8 weeks when I found out so I ovulated when she was 8 weeks old. Doctor said we are too well fed and healthy nowadays for it to work as contraception.

RomComPhooey · 03/02/2016 07:19

My mw told me (before discharging me after having dd1) that you don't ovulate for at least 56 days after birth when ebfing. I was she was giving that advice. I think she's trying to keep her work place busy

I knew 2 sets of siblings 10mo apart at school, in one case they straddled the school year & in the other my friend was lumbered with her little brother in the same school year. She hated it.

Katenka · 03/02/2016 07:20

My dbros best friend was in the same school year as his older brother.

seastargirl · 03/02/2016 07:36

Yes, happened to me. It was also the first time we'd had full sex between the two children, due to a stitching disaster with my first that needed repairing. 15 month age gap, most the time I consider myself very lucky!

Coffeemachine · 03/02/2016 07:40

with Dc1 (Ebf for 6 months and then extended until 2.5) I got my periods back at 14 months. Expected the same with Dc2 but was back on at 4 months despite EBF. didn't get pregnant though but could have been caught out easily.

cleaty · 03/02/2016 07:55

Yes, my mum. There is 11 months between me and my sister.

Effiethemonster · 03/02/2016 08:00

Crkey, the information leaflet I was given when I was discharged said ebf was 98% effective or something!! Hmm

seastargirl · 03/02/2016 08:04

Forgot to add that first born was conceived after 3 years of trying and being told I'd never conceive without assistance. Second was conceived completely naturally!

Gatehouse77 · 03/02/2016 08:07

Yep, twice for me!

lanbro · 03/02/2016 08:09

Dd2 was conceived while still bf dd1 at 9 months, no period, so yes but I knew bf wasn't a reliable contraceptive so wasn't surprised!

notapizzaeater · 03/02/2016 08:25

My mum too, 10.5 months between me and my sister

Levatrice · 03/02/2016 08:32

Very possible, my ds was concieved when dd was 3/4 months ebf with no dropped feeds. I would take a test maybe next monday or tuesday .

ohtheholidays · 03/02/2016 08:36

Yes I was breastfeeding and on the pill,my DS was just coming upto 11 months when I fell pregnant with my 4th DC,DD now 12.

DustyBloovers · 03/02/2016 08:38

I was BF and had one period when my DD was around 6 weeks old. DTD once then no more periods. Didn't think anything about it until I mentioned to my sis that I had a tinny taste in my mouth. She posted a pregnancy test through my letterbox the next morning on her way to work Smile

My DS was born 12 months and 3 weeks after DD so the answer in my case is yes Grin

ISaySteadyOn · 03/02/2016 08:38

Yes, this is why we have lovely DS. 11 mo between him and DD2. So, cleaty, I want to ask, how do you and your dsis get on now?

ohtheholidays · 03/02/2016 08:42

Sorry OP posted to soon. When I went to the clinic to get a test done they told me it happens alot.My Dr told me the same that they had quite a few women at the surgery who had fell pregnant whilst on the pill and breastfeeding.

One of my friends only has 11 months between her 2 sons and she was the same no period, breastfeeding quite alot and on the pill.

cleaty · 03/02/2016 09:00

We got on incredibly well as children and teenagers, we were very close. Unfortunately we hardly speak to one another as adults. After my DS got married, she was no longer interested in anyone else except her own family.

LadyLuck81 · 03/02/2016 09:13

My H is a result of my MIL falling pregnant while BF and no period back.

ISaySteadyOn · 03/02/2016 10:12

Thanks, cleaty. There are 5 years between my little sister and myself so I have no experience of a close age gap.
