AIBU to not want to spend more than £2000 on a family holiday for 4?

To me and DH this is a lot of money. We earn about £50k pa so can pay more but we both feel that no week can be worth much more. We have been on holidays in cottages to Cornwall, Dorset and mobile home holidays in France mainly. A couple of years ago we went on an AI to Spain. We had a great time but spent £2500 and had our DC in the room with us so was not that relaxing as they are teens. We just don't feel we can bring ourselves to spend more and can't go out of school holidays. Any fab ideas?

granny I'm a firm believer that you don't have to spend a lot of money to have a good time.

We've just had a quote for (brace yourself) £24k!!!! - needless to say we won't be going on that one. It was for 5 nights in Chicago followed by 4 nights in Cape Cod and 4 nights in Martha's Vineyard. Premium economy flights but 5* hotels. We are going to have to tweak substantially to get the price anywhere close to realistic (perhaps rent an apartment in Cape Cod / Martha's vineyard, do fewer nights and perhaps just either Cape Cod or Martha's vineyard rather than both).

captain farrell, I agree and if I had spent £8k I don't think I would have had a good time. Your holiday sounds great and good value and having separate rooms is a great boost.

hmsAsWas, good job you warned us to brace for that one. Maybe £8k wasn't as bad as I thought! I am even more out of date than I realised. I am going to go and lie in a darkened room. (It does sound great though, now if I win the lottery I might come to you for some tips.)

It is eye watering isn't it! And I'd really like to do that holiday Sad

Do you have a nice house and a relaxed attitude?! House swap has been amazing for us. Two weeks in Los Angeles with a pool and a car for £2.5k (i.e. our flights for 4). We have done 10 swaps now - could never go back to paying for hotels. Shown our children so many new places with zero accommodation or car hire costs.

Great if you live in a tourist area!!!

Wow - that is a very affordable way of doing it Kerala1

Its not for everyone and you do need a decent house in an appealing area. But lots of England is attractive to foreigners even if you may not think it is.

Lots of our friends are horrified as randoms stay in our house, but we use a reputable website and the randoms all turn out to be perfectly nice other families. Started when we were stuck with school holidays, even average packages or Eurocamping were £3k in school summer hols.

So far we have visited Paris, London, Lake District, Lanzarote, Brittany, Brussels, Sardinia, Austria, Antwerp, Spain, Ireland. Old hands now! Spend so much on our house figured it needs to earn its keep.

We have a nice house and live on the outskirts of the New Forest so we would be quite a good fit I think
