To think turning up early is very rude?

I have my grumpy face on today.

We've moved home and our good friends (a couple) wanted to come round for a nosey. I offered to make them dinner and we arranged for them to come today at 4pm. DD had a birthday party to go early afternoon, so we weren't at home. At 2.30pm I got a text to say they were on their way (they live 5 minute drive away). However I didn't read it until I stopped at Sainsburys to get veg, at 2.45pm. By that point they'd turned around, and said they'd just come another day. I pointed out they weren't due until 4pm and she said "yes but thought we'd come early as we had the time free" Hmm

AIBU to think it's fucking rude to do this? I now have a huge bloody pie that's going to waste. Why do people think it's ok to be so early?!

Rude. Freeze the pie. (Eat the pie.)

Ginkypig · 31/01/2016 17:47

I'm ok(ish) with up to half an hour early esp if they don't drive but that's taking the piss.

digerd · 31/01/2016 17:53

Definitely selfish and inconsiderate of them, but most people are. And to boot, as you did not play to their tune they cancelled your generous offer of cooking dinner for them with no conscience of having inconvenienced you.

I am speecless really, as they live only 5 minutes away why on earth did they not return to you at 4pm and apologise for any inconvenience they caused you?

They live on a different planet to me. There is no excuse for their behaviour. Confused

OzzieFem · 31/01/2016 18:01

Yes they were rude! Let them come on another day, but don't feed them. They only live 5 mins away so they can bloody well go home for dinner.

HackerFucker22 · 31/01/2016 18:19

Yep. Rude and assuming (nowhere near as bad as being 1.5 hours late though!!l)

If they live 5 minutes away I can't see why they didn't just go home and come back at the agreed time.

comedycentral · 31/01/2016 18:52

Did you tell them about the pie?

Damselindestress · 31/01/2016 19:21

I can't believe they threw their toys out of the pram and refused to come to dinner because you weren't there when they arrived over an hour early! And after you'd made the effort to cook for them! They live 5 minutes away so it wouldn't have been a hardship to come back later. YANBU. Let them know that it was inconvenient for them to cancel at such short notice.

ridemesideways · 31/01/2016 19:25

They may have wrongly assumed you'd forgotten... Didn't you know you were meant to be slaving over a hot stove at that hour?! Wink

cuntycowfacemonkey · 31/01/2016 19:26

Wow that's really poor form! Turning up an hour and a half early is but then cancelling dinner plans altogether because you weren't there is beyond rude.

Gobbolino6 · 31/01/2016 19:29

Incredibly rude!

FarrowandBallAche · 31/01/2016 19:31

What pie was it?

Are they always like that?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/01/2016 19:31

Yep, very rude.

bloodyteenagers · 31/01/2016 19:34

i would have text back.
Wish i had known you were intending on cancelling. Then I would have had a lie in, instead of waking up early to bake etc, knowing we were out.

PuppyMonkey · 31/01/2016 19:40

Did you tell them about the party or did they just think you were free until 4pm?

GrumpyOldBag · 31/01/2016 19:55

They were rude.

But 4 pm is an odd time to have people round for dinner ... Confused

WitchWay · 31/01/2016 19:57

Rude to come so early. I don't understand, when they live so close, why they didn't come back at 4pm Confused

Oh we'll come another day? Errr no you won't you cheeky feckers. People have plans on the weekend and aren't waiting around for friends to drop in. Too early. YANBU.

EastMidsMummy · 31/01/2016 20:05

I would have text back

Texted.

Primaryteach87 · 31/01/2016 20:05

People being early annoys me intensely. I don't think more a couple of minutes early due to watch differences is acceptable!

Particularly when both forms are actually accepted. Grin

I wouldn't be inviting them again.

MammaTJ · 31/01/2016 20:14

They should have just slunk away realising they were in the wrong and turned up at the correct time!

FarrowandBallAche · 31/01/2016 20:17

I saw the erroneous text and it bugged me too.

PiperChapstick · 31/01/2016 20:33

Farrow it was Chicken & Ham tangle pie by the hairy bikers!

Grumpy we were gonna have a few cuppas first and I was making dinner for 5.30pm.

I have no idea why they didn't just come back at 4pm but needless to say they can piss off if they think I'm cooking for them again! Oh well more tangle pie for me Grin
