Redecorating, is photo wallpaper cool or tacky?

Have just started stripping wallpaper in what will be our lounge. Very old house and the current dodgy textured wallpaper has been there since the dark ages. I've hit on a massive photo wall (something like black and white new York city skyline) as a way to drag the room into the 21st century rather than just a fresh coat of paint. Dh said it would either look cool or kitsch or just tacky. Then he decided it would get in the way of him having a massive TV on that wall, so now he is against. But I am really keen and want some opinions on whether it is a terrible idea? It would be one whole wall so 12ft long and all the way up to the ceiling. Any thoughts?

I'm with those that say if YOU like it then buy it! Why listen to me or anyone else, you might hate how my place is decorated! I like my style but it doesn't bother me if a stranger on here doesn't! Grin

Don't do it! Buy a canvas if you must but the full image is just awful. Look at this house and the bedroom wall. I actually snored when I saw it

Donthate · 30/01/2016 13:58

This house!

RhiWrites · 30/01/2016 14:07

I actually think it will look better with the giant TV.

Bluenailsblueshoes · 30/01/2016 14:11

For a child's bedroom it's ok but in a lounge, no.

They are doing these mural wallpapers in Lidl this week for under a tenner, including the Brooklyn bridge one. Don't do it - it will look tacky and dated in no time.

bedraggledmumoftwo · 30/01/2016 15:33

It was the lidl 9.99 ones I was looking at lol. Couldn't believe it when I saw they are usually £70 a roll! However, given it is so cheap I might buy some and can always paint over it if I hate it. Cheaper than lining paper!

If the plaster isn't good enough to paint then fair enough, but otherwise a nice coat of paint and a picture you can change when your tastes change would be my preference by far (and so much easier than redecorating). But agree, if cost is an issue, you can't beat those lidl murals on price.

I've got the new york skyline canvas. Loved it but it's now been up 2 years and i've really gone off it. Not helped by the fact that my daughter (26) keeps saying it doesn't go with anything and doesn't have any significance. Although she does backtrack and say if i like it that's all that matters. I think if it was a mural i would hate it.

NoCapes · 30/01/2016 19:58

Oh god don't do it!
Your 'grown up sanctuary' will look like a teenage boys bedroom
Just no

Plateofcrumbs · 30/01/2016 20:10

Well taste is personal, go with what makes you happy yadda yadda...

...but my personal opinion? No, no and thrice no. Photo wallpaper can work if you're some kind of interiors whizz and get the juxtaposition with the rest of the room just so.

New York skyline? There's pretty much no circumstance in which this works unless you live in New York and it's not wallpaper, it's a window.

TheTigerIsOut · 30/01/2016 20:27

I think that is the sort of thing that would look ok in an ultramodern flat with open views to brick walls.

Old house and a TV mounted over it, tacky beyond belief. Sorry.

gamerchick · 30/01/2016 20:48

I will say though they are an absolute pig to hang. Unless you have go go gadget arms (or 2 people) are really awesome at hanging then I would test another area of the house first, especially if they're the use paste type.

SmartiesMakeMeNaughty · 30/01/2016 21:45

I think you should do whatever you like.
But then you shouldn't listen to me - because I've got that disgusting expensive woods wallpaper and I love it.

I'm afraid I'm voting for tacky.
