To prefer English Ice Cream from Devon to Italian Gelati

I feel the stuff we get here is just so much yummier and when Italians talk about their ice cream, I just smile politely but inside I think it is over-rated.
Also I think the yogurt here is so much more delicious..

Hockings, based in Bideford, North Devon. Best icecream ever, bar none Smile

I didn't realise it had been sold. Love Cherry G and had noticed I could no longer get it Sad

Sorry that message was to OurBlanche Blush

Ah, thanks for the clarification re gelato/ice cream.

I'm in Italy, and it's all just gelato, and they translate it all as ice-cream. And as I said upthread, some of it is good, some of it is rank, but you can definitely tell which has been made with proper ingredients (in my town of 60,000 there is only one gelateria that I know of that does, the rest is the same old mass produced cack that you get everywhere, just with more flavours)

Hockings Ice Cream from Appledore in North Devon is the best Ice Cream I have tasted - delicious.

Inertia · 30/01/2016 09:14

Now I want the last bit of my Cheshire Ice Cream Farm Gin and Tonic sorbet for breakfast, and I'm fairly sure that's not considered acceptable breakfast food.

LaurieMarlow · 30/01/2016 09:23

Carte Dor isn't even English. Confused

ratspeaker · 30/01/2016 10:16

I prefer Scottish ice cream every time.

OurBlanche · 30/01/2016 10:52

Well, if you're going to get all nationalist about it... I'll take kulfi!

CakeNinja · 30/01/2016 11:03

I love Italian gelato although I do like Haagen Dazs and a few others.
I too have visited Mr Bs in cornwall and wasn't impressed, our DC were and we have been back lots but I'm always disappointed. I don't eat a lot of ice cream because I have sensitive teeth, but I'd never touch carte d'or again, my gran used to buy it and it was rank Envy

gasman · 30/01/2016 11:32

I love all ice cream.

In the supermarket I buy premium and have shifted back to HaagenDaz after years of b&j. The green and blacks stuff isn't bad either.

I wouldn't rate carte d'or as a premium brand despite their aspirational marketing.

Out - I like pretty much anything from an independent. Highlight of my last trip to cornwall was Moomaids of zennor ice cream.

After people mentioning it on here, we are going to joes parlour in swansea tomorrow. What's best to have? Grin

Bunbaker · 30/01/2016 15:16

You're all wrong Grin

The best ice cream is Yummy Yorkshire

Although I am partial to Italian pistachio ice-cream when holidaying in Italy.

theycallmemellojello · 30/01/2016 15:23

Yabvu! Good Italian ice cream beats everything else imo. But you have to go to Italy to get it.

StellaAlpina · 30/01/2016 15:57

I'm Italian and I prefer gelato to ice cream but weirdly I prefer English milk to Italian milk (just normal supermarket cartons)

I really really want an ice cream maker but am not sure I'd use it enough for it to be worth the expense of a decent one.

iPost · 30/01/2016 16:06

Me too.

20 years living in Italy and still prefer Hargen Daz to the local Gelateria who lovingly handmade everything.

I'd eat ice cream from Devon as a first choice over HD given half a chance. Not that I can see the supermarket stocking it anytime soon.

DS and DH ... not so much, tricolore waving nationalists that they are. I made (with much help from MN) Nigella's no whisk/no ice cream maker homemade ice cream (subbing mascapone for the elusive double cream) and while I was in heaven, they said they liked it, but still prefered the local stuff.

Ungrateful buggers aren't getting any of the next batch. Am keeping it all for me.

Nantucket l love the double raspberry ice in Joe's. It's two scoops of ice cream in a little boat, with raspberry sauce and wafers. I have chocolate vermicelli on top too; it's lovely. Grin

My DDs like the one with Nutella, but I find that the Nutella goes hard with the ice cream. The chocolate sundae is nice too.

Bunbaker · 30/01/2016 16:13

This Mary Berry recipe makes glorious ice-cream, and it is so easy.

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/01/2016 16:15

I've never tried gelato and I don't much like ice cream, it's too sweet and too cold.
