I'm a new driver and haven't been insured for long. I was driving past a car in a tight space in 2nd gear and all of a sudden i heard a sound to which I didn't pay much attention and I drove off. I looked back and the car had stopped, as I was in a hurry as I was doing school run I drove off and I later realised my wing mirror had been hit and it had been damaged. After I had dropped the kids to school which took about 5 mins maybe less I went back to that road hoping to see the car but it had gone. I'm quite worried the person might've taken my reg number and might make a claim! I've only been insured for less than a month so I'm quite worried. I really don't know what I should do, any tips?

Just let the police know that you didn't realise what happened, that when you saw the damage you went back and you should be fine. If the other driver does report you the police probably won't get involved, just pass the details on.

Someone broke my husbands wing mirror when we were parked. He left a lovely note giving insurance details, he was a tourist in a hire car. My husband just fixed the wing mirror and wished he had the guys number to let him know it was all OK, shame if it ruined his holiday.

I think you always know if you have pranged another car and if another car has pranged you. Don't drive off if it happens again tho. Leave a note if a cat is parked and unoccupied. Now that everyone has cameras on their phone, chances are someone will take a pic. I would err on side of phoning 101 this time as you don't want to risk 6 points so soon after passing your test. I reversed into a lampost the first day I went out after passing. The first few months of solo driving can be scary.

If a cat is parked and unoccupied you can just stroke them and walk away tho :)

Well if you hit them then thats what they should do! Its only right they have their damages paid for by you if you caused them, right?

Pride comes before a fall, permanentlyexhausted. Have you really have nothing better to do than come on here, having a go at me, when you know nothing about me or my driving?
I only joined mumsnet about a week ago and the sanctimonious judgemental crap I've seen on this thread alone is making me reconsider whether I really want to be here. Get a life!

Buxtonstill · 30/01/2016 19:33

It was the wing mirror to your right (I.e 12 inches from your eyes) and you didn't notice it being damaged?

I came out from my work and the whole passenger side rear door of my car was dented. No one around, I was parked across the road from someone's driveway but not over their driveway or obstructing in any way, they have obviously reversed out and hit me.

Next time I drive past a van was in the driveway with a big dent in the bumper. I went to the police with a photo of the an but they said unless they admit it there is nothing they could do. Also got told to inform my insurance company which I did even though I was not making a claim.

Got a new door and got the door repaired it was £300. When I came to reinsure the car they said I had a claim even though it wasn't a claim and I had no claims protected.

Talk about not being rewarded for being honest.

You do not have to inform your insurance company of an accident. It is perfectly acceptable for you to pay for it yourself and forget about it. Some really poor advice on this thread

Yes, some very poor advice. You do have to report every accident to your insurance company, even if you were not at fault. Your insurance quotation is based upon the information given to them at the point of inception/renewal and if you do not provide them with any new information, such as being involved in an accident, then you can invalidate your insurance and driving without insurance is illegal.

You also have the following responsibilities:

If, as a driver, your vehicle is involved in a road-traffic accident/collision on a road or public place and one or more of the following occurs:

a person, other than yourself, is injured,
damage is caused to another vehicle or to someone else's property - including street lamps, signs, bollards etc.
an animal, other than one in your own vehicle/trailer, has been killed or injured (animal means any horse, cattle, ass, mule, sheep, pig, goat or dog).

YOU MUST:

stop (whether it's your fault or not) AND,
give your name and address, the vehicle owner's name and address and your vehicle's registration number to anyone with reasonable grounds for asking for those details.

If you don't give your name and address, you must report the accident at a police station or to a police constable as soon as you can, and in any case within 24 hours (this does not mean you have 24 hours in which to report the accident). If you fail to stop, fail to give your and the owner's name and address or the vehicle's details or fail to report the accident, you commit an offence/s.

Report it but as both cars were moving just explain thT you heard a small knock, didn't think anything of it and when you notice your wing mirror returned but the other car had gone, you think you both must have knocked wing mirrors when passing and now want to report as as you have no way of finding the other car, do the same with your insurer and then don't worry about it,
