To want the Mirena out Right NOW!!!!

milkandmarmite · 28/01/2016 07:26

I'm fed up basically. had the Mirena coil fitted three weeks ago for uterine endometriosis (read horrendous periods). Gynae had pushed this option for a full twelve months but I hadn't been particularly keen - perfering just to 'manage.' Relented in the end as I just got to a point where I couldn't cope with the monthly pain, flooding etc.

Anyway, three weeks in. I've gained HALF a stone. Despite very healthy eating (I had been loosing weight prior to Mirena), my boobs are so sore I can barely touch them. And I'm as spotty as anything. (I've never had spots before)

I feel so depressed. AIBU to just have it out? I know I haven't had it long but I feel fat and horrible.

it has been recommended to me too, but Ive read so many horror stories.

Scholes34 · 28/01/2016 13:59

Yes I've had weight-gain, which I'm a bit fed up about, but the lack of very heavy periods over the last five years has been wonderful. I know I'm now post-menopausal, so will be making an appointment to have it removed very soon.

I'm assuming that I won't instantly lose the weight I've gained (alas).

milkandmarmite · 28/01/2016 19:27

Thank you all for your replies. Thought i might not be the only one. I will give it a tad longer to see if it does indeed settle, but I fear it's only going to go one way! I feel dreadful.

I had it for about 2.5 years and then one day it just decided to ruin my life. I can't really put into words how but it just made me crazy. I was over emotional, sluggish, tired, felt like I was constantly fighting off illnesses, there was the most rank smell down there, i'd get angry over the most silly things. I begged the doctor to take it out and the first time they refused and led me to believe I was making it up but I just knew. I was frantically googling for how to get my partner to take it out, and thankfully he went to the doctors with me and I had it removed.

I realise this sounds so far-fetched and strange but I went back to normal instantly. And after it I searched on the internet and found LOADS of similar stories.

Annoying as I really liked it for the first wee while, it was so easy!

passmethewineplease · 28/01/2016 19:54

I've had no issues with mine up until now, I seem to be bleeding constantly, only lightly but enough to piss me off.

YANBU, be prepared to be told to wait it out though.

Hihohoho1 · 28/01/2016 20:01

Pass

Yes although overall it's cured my horrendously heavy constant periods I have some light long annoying bleeding. Not enough for a tampax but annoying.

I reakon a hell of a lot more research and listening to womem needs up happen over this.

Unfortunately some of these symptoms seem to be being brushed off.

milkandmarmite · 28/01/2016 20:20

I don't understand why they tell you the hormones are all
Localised when quite clearly they are not. Angry

AndNowItsSeven · 28/01/2016 20:25

If you want it removed just tell the doctor you want to try for a baby and they will take it out.

allibaba · 28/01/2016 20:44

I actually sat in the doctors yesterday complaining about mine. I know it works for some women but I've had 3 years now of painful boobs that you cant even brush against because they are agony for 2 weeks a month. But there is a real reluctance to try something different from the GPs.

I had really badly heavy periods (to the point where I almost went to A&E as I thought I was hermoragging). Went to see my male GP who told me it was my own fault for having kids close together! WTF?! Eventually saw someone who told me Mirena was the only thing available.

Went to see male GP last year to ask for alternatives, told there was none. Then found out out about endometrial ablation which can be alternative for women who have definitely finished their families. GP is very resistant so far to me changing but I'm not letting this go. I don't feel right. I can't put my finger on it but have not felt right since I had this damn thing in. My moods are everywhere, my tits hurt and I've had enough.

I've also had enough of explaining to male GPs that not being able to leave the house for 2 days a month due to the flow of the period is not a practical solution for anyone. But apparently male GPs are just as qualified to understand what its like to get a lift from a friend and realise that you've bled all over their car seat even though you only changed the biggest bulkiest sanitary towel known to mankind only an hour before...

Hamiltoes · 28/01/2016 20:52

Yes I should have said in my post, I had to say my partner and I wanted a baby so they would remove it.

It was ridiculous.

And alli I know exactly what you mean about "can't put my finger on it but I've not felt right". Even looking back now I at some of the things I said/ did I think WTF. And it really did go away overnight.

I really think the mirena needs to be researched more. I don't know what it is but I still to this day think its evil.

bimbobaggins · 28/01/2016 21:09

I had the mirena fitted 2.5 years ago for heavy periods. I bled constantly for 6 months. My hair fell out at an alarming level. I was already obese so didnt notice any weight gain.
Now i stil get a monthly period but nowhere near as bad as original ones.

Despite near enough monthly visits to gp at start about bleedin and hairloss i was told neither of these were attributed to the mirena.

Now i have another couple of years to go and hen i have the joy of getting it removed when the strings have disappeared so im really looking forward to that!

SevenOfNineTrue · 28/01/2016 21:16

I love mine. 6 months after it was fitted, I never had another period. My life was blighted by painful periods but now I never have to worry.

Sorry it did not work for you.

mudandmayhem01 · 28/01/2016 21:27

I love mine as do the majority of my friends who have them including several doctors I don't doubt any of the stories here but it seems to be a completely parallel universe to my experience of mirena. I read a lot of research before I had mine fitted and it seemed to be a has a good track record across many countries. Condolences to anyone who has had a bad experience but it doesn't mean it is intrinsically evil. I am so glad I have found a way of getting rid of periods and fear of unwanted pregnancy. We need more choices of contraception to suit everyone though.

Imustgodowntotheseaagain · 28/01/2016 21:33

My family planning nurse told me they cost about 100 quid each so they're quite reluctant to whip them in and out quickly.

mynamesnotsam · 28/01/2016 22:05

I think mine is great. In fact I'm having a new one put in soon as the five years are nearly up. It did take about 8 months to settle down but it was worth it to have more than 4 years free from heavy periods and having to worry about contraception. They're quite expensive too so it's a bit of a waste just to have it taken out without giving it a chance.

Nimble2014 · 28/01/2016 22:16

I had a mirena - after about 3 months, my periods disappeared completely. I did find it hard to lose weight ( only wanted to drop 2 lb). I am a little conflicted about it because it is a really effective contraceptive, and no periods (after some quite nightmarishly heavy ones). I kept mine for five years and truth be told don't think it was bad. BUT I didn't replace it. I don't quite understand my ambivalence over the mirena - I had taken oral contraceptives before then, and had no real issues, and they are a much higher dose of hormones.
It would be useful actually, for drugs companies to have a website where confirmed users could discuss their side effects to prove whether there is a link or not. I find it really worrying when you hear ' this medicine has this side effect', but I'm extremely aware that sometimes, an issue catches the public imagination to bad effect - the mmr controversy for example?

freshstart4us · 28/01/2016 22:42

Weirdly I can post both a negative and a positive review of mirena. Had first one in after having DD, as I was bfeeding and wanted lowest possible hormonal dose. Hated it. Constant breakthrough bleeding, horrible PMS, periods got more painful and they were already quite unpleasant. Had it our after about 5 months I think. Felt like it had moved and was sticking into me so got all hysterical and wouldn't leave the clinic until doc took the bloody thing out. Swore never again.

UNTIL 2 years later, now bfeeding DS, kept forgetting my mini pill and petrified of getting pg again, had a consult for tubal ligation and Obgyn advises that I may well end up with one anyway as they are being used to manage menopause (I'm 42 so within sight thereof). Suggested I try it again, I have and 2 months in it has been absolutely fantastic. Think I'm getting the rage a little but have had only minimal spotting, no discomfort, cramps or other side effects at all.

So - persevere would be my recommendation OP. And if this one doesn't work out, don't write it off as an option in the future.

Scholes34 · 01/02/2016 14:00

That's quite interesting about the menopause. I've had a Mirena coil for four years now. I only found out I was post-menopausal because the GP did a blood-test. None of the usual symptoms at all.

Genx77 · 01/02/2016 14:11

I've had mine in for four years now, Had it fitted for the same reason as you OP. I'm one of the few who has been fine, no probs since day 1, I've actually lost weight! No skin problems etc, I wish I'd have done it years ago, to think of all the times I was in agony with blood streaming down my legs, soaking through tampons and pads and even my clothes, even if the mirena had given me a few unwanted side effects, anything would have been better than missing out on life because of periods.

milkandmarmite · 01/02/2016 14:23

I'm so glad it's worked for you Genx! Sadly, I can't go another day and have booked for the removal tomorrow morning. I'm disappointed it hasn't worked out and now not sure what my options are, but I just can't continue. Nor can I continue with the pain and flooding! Sigh.

OP posts:
Genx77 · 01/02/2016 14:29

I had a few successful ish months on mefanamic acid, it did lower the blood flow but I never got the hang of timing it right with the tablets because my periods were not like clockwork but if yours are I would say its worth taking.

Lazeedayz · 01/02/2016 14:32

I've only had mine in for nearly three weeks and I'm on the verge of asking for it to be taken out.

I've had it for really heavy periods, I've already been sterilised so it's purely gynae reasons. I didn't read anything online, before having it fitted, just the leaflet that the doctor gave me as I was so desperate and I didn't want to be put off by horror stories.

Since having it in, I've got a horrible odour that even when I've just showered I don't feel clean. It's not fishy so I don't think it's an infection. Since I've googled it, the Internet is full of people saying it made them smell.

Since quitting smoking I've put three stone on and had just managed to lose half. Stone so I'm really worried that even though I'm dieting and exercising I'm going to gain weight.

Scholes34 · 08/02/2016 12:36

Just had mine out this morning. GP's receptionist made me an appointment with the Family Planning nurse. No questions asked about why I wanted it out. No more discomfort than a smear test for it to come out, though I had taken some painkillers beforehand, just in case that helped.

cardibach · 08/02/2016 12:54

I love mine. I'm on my 3rd. It has changed my life. I think I probably did gain a little weight, but it is possible to lose it. I have had sore breasts for a week or so each month for the first 3 or 4 months of each new coil then that stops. No other negative symptoms and rarely have a period. When I do, it's just spotting. I could be a saleswoman. Sorry it isn't working for you, but it is probably worth giving it a little longer.

whatevva · 08/02/2016 12:55

When googling how much progestogen it gives out per day, I found that there was an initial surge when it is first put in. This then reduces to around the 10ug/day that they claim, gradually reducing (14ug/day) towards the end of the 5-7 years.

Can't find it again Sad
