It's rather petty and seems a bit too desperate an attempt to get the upper hand in a debate.

Well, that's the thing - it wasn't (to my mind) a debate. He wasn't debating. He was essentially saying "I say this is how it is, because I say so." And rest assured that I hadn't stopped batting back arguments to just go " Well, you can't punctuate! " It was more like an addendum.

People cannot help their IQ, family or education and it's rarely sensible to point out grammar errors, although if it's a thread about grammar I might sometimes make an exception. That said we all learn something new every day (I do) and it can help people to know if they say I was sat rather than I was sitting they will be getting it wrong in many contexts. One of my sons recently said he didn't know it's always means it is and is never used for a possessive. I thought it was helpful to tell him that given it is one of the most common mistakes (the dog ate it's bone - always is wrong)

I'm a languages teacher, so I correct grammar as part of my job (albeit in French and German). Poor grammar and spelling in English do irritate me, but I would never dream of correcting someone, as that would be unforgivably rude. I do rather enjoy those "Which grammar/spelling mistakes really wind you up?" threads though!

Poor punctuation makes my teeth itch.
