To ignore dentist who has told me to give up fruit

My dentist has said its best to just give up fruit all together. I guess from her point of view that may be good, she would love it if people just existed on water.

However fruit is good for you, vitamins minerals and helps have a balanced diet.

AIBU to just ignore her and to carry on having fruit with meals, i do always floss afterwards and swish with water.

Any other dentists out there who disagree with this advice?

Whizz it up and drink it through a straw as a smoothie. The straw will mean the fruit bypasses your teeth.

whois · 27/01/2016 00:22

I got told off for sparking water and fruit teas. Can't win.

livingintheNL · 27/01/2016 08:44

fruit teas?!?

I have just bought glass straws for hot drinks, i feel like a hampster.

Well, you haven't said WHY she said it.

How much fruit do you consume, per day/week?

differentnameforthis · 27/01/2016 09:10

And rinse mouth out after eating fruit but don't floss or brush till at least an hour after otherwise the fruit acid just gets scrubbed into your teeth!

You are good to brush after 20 minutes.

I have about 10 portions of veg a day and 3-4 of fruit. Dont snack on it.

She said i had errosion of the teeth, but no fillings.

People saying eat veg are missing the point, fruit and veg are different. I do lots of sports and need the carbs in a simple form like fruit.

Erosion of the teeth mean that you are losing enamel. Once you have lost enamel, the dentine underneath is softer & that erodes quicker. You can lose teeth this way and/or need fillings.

The advice to keep fruit to meal times is best and to drink after having fruit, if you have to have it at any other time.

firesidechat · 27/01/2016 10:47

If I had to choose between giving up fruit and eating more veg, and my teeth falling out, it's a no brainer really. There are surely substitutes for fruit, but substitute teeth cost thousands.

Christ alive, are you serious?! I can't even think of ten vegetables Confused

Genuine question: what do you eat? I am full of admiration for you!

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 27/01/2016 10:58

You don't need fruit, it's sugar.

And the sport thing is rubbish! Such a myth that the body needs sugar to move

I low carb as a way of life and run marathons. I've never needed sugar

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 27/01/2016 11:00

I think it's very possible to eat that much veg, more so if you are vegetarian! Even green smoothies/juices would use up a few portions

maybebabybee · 27/01/2016 11:02

I agree it's possible, I'm just struggling to think of how.

I eat a lot of fruit and am trying to cut down and eat more veg, but I just don't find it as interesting. I do eat a decent amount veg, but I would really struggle to get 10 portions of it a day. It would be expensive apart from anything else!

lastqueenofscotland · 27/01/2016 11:12

I run 5-12 miles a day and don't "need" sugar.
I bloody love it though

Thecatisatwat · 27/01/2016 11:19

Maybe I agree. If I ate that amount of fruit and veg I would struggle to eat anything else at all which would mean I'd be seriously deficient in things like dairy and fats (which would probably mean I wouldn't get enough calcium etc for healthy teeth and bones). There was a news report a few months back saying that dentists are worried about people snacking on fruit because of enamel erosion, I'm guessing it's less of a problem if it's part of a meal.

If we're going to be technical, then I don't need the vast majority of the food I eat, but I eat it because I enjoy it Confused

lighteningirl · 27/01/2016 11:29

I eat at least ten portions of fruit and veg a day I've already had banana and raspberries in my porridge snacked on a pear. I have courgette and aubergine salad left over from dinner to go with the lettuce/toms and ham for lunch and tonight were having roast lamb chops with red onions broccoli green beans. I've also got homemade veg soup to snack on at 4 o'clock that's got sweet potato butternut squash celery etc etc ten is easy once you start trying. I think the dentist has a point tho I only eat small portions of grapes/ half of a banana/ one of two figs etc as they are the higher sugar fruits. Oh and there's loads of mint coriander onions etc in the couscous I'm having with lunch Grin am going to have some crisps now as that sounded much too virtuous but it's a fairly normal day for me.

livingintheNL · 27/01/2016 11:36

I never said you need sugar, I said I need carbs. tried the whole fat and protein for energy and no my body needs carbs.

Its easy eating lots of veg, I dont eat grains so stock up on veg. TBH if you dont eat stodge its very easy

my dentist and hygienist would rather I died of heart disease from eating cheese and fat every time I'm hungry, than choosing to eat anything remotely acidic.

whatevva · 27/01/2016 12:00

Mine told me only to eat soft food - makes me feel like an aged Victorian Hmm

livingintheNL · 27/01/2016 12:21

Lol!

I think dentists are crazy tooth eccentric people and are giving very silly advice. No point having great teeth if you look like shit.

Just had baked sweet potatoes, with home made chilli (passta, red onion, red peppers, garlic, carrot, kidney beans). Easily 5+ portions, even the onion was over 80g.
