AIBU?

To not understand the biscuit thing?

I feel like I'm missing something important. What is this Biscuit and why is it used? I've seen some posters say it's the first time they've "given" it to someone? I feel like I should be able to figure it out but I'm lost.

I've hidden several threads, sometimes those I regret starting (cos I'm a twat and was having a bad day), and others because sometimes on MN, there is no give in an a debate about why 5 year olds are in nappies at school (NOT SN children).

fidel1ne · 25/01/2016 00:07

Normally used by the "in crowd" on Mumsnet, especially against anyone daring to suggest children over the age of 3 don't need nappies, co sleeping, or God forbid breastfeeding to sleep and nursed during the night.

What a motley collection of bollards Janey.

I've never heard search madey up random nonsense.

Do you mean that that's the group who have given YOU a hundredweight of most biscuits?

Ha, X post. That's exactly what you mean Smile

Was that an 'in crowd' jibe on the 1st page? Well played.

I don't think I've used it either, sparkling. I feel like I need to wait for some big important thread to give the first one, but mostly I just find I can't give a fuck.

Yes I hide the thread before the biscuit is required Rafa.

Tell us what would get you going Rafa, we'll do something bespoke for you, if it helps.

Yes you Fidel, you. But then there are the lots of mums who have thanked me for my advice etc.

Yes you Fidel, you.

Me what me? Confused

You miss the point of the thread????

fidel1ne · 25/01/2016 00:19

I haven't got small children Janey I couldn't give a monkeys how provocative you get about nappies and night feeds. Or how often.

But of course the parents of under-5s will.

Janeymoo50 · 25/01/2016 00:29

Gah.....exactly my point!!!! I give up.

Go back to the beginning and explain how you were unlucky enough to get 'the in crowd' showering you with biscuits. I'll listen more carefully.

Muddlewitch · 25/01/2016 01:07

Why is it a Jamie dodger though? I only share jammy dodger type biscuits with people I like, if I just wanted to shut them up I'd give them a rich tea or something.

I didn't understand it either op, though I do remember the Gordon Brown chat so it makes more sense now someone's mentioned that was when it started.

Janey the "in crowd"? We're not at school.

MN has a number of well known posters, people who've been on MN for a long time, post prolifically and never name change.

They aren't an in crowd. At best it means we're fairly sure they aren't trolls.

A recognised poster might get a slightly easier time if they say something controversial but only if their posting history indicates that they are usually sensible.

I wouldn't say that Gordon Brown "refused" to answer a question about his favourite biscuit on his MN webchat, just that he did not answer. (GB has very poor eyesight and I think it is unlikely he was responding too spontaneously to questions asked on the day; it was clear that most of his replies were C&P prepared replies to questions already asked or questions that had been anticipated by his staff.)

MN posters then made a MASSIVE thing about him not answering this question. I mean massive. It went on and on. And on. This had the following effects, in order:

  1. Mumsnet members were made to look like a bunch of biscuit-obsessed complete fucking airheads in all the national press (with some justification given the thread I have to acknowledge).
  2. Gordon Brown was made to look stuffy and boring. What, the prime minister is a serious Politician?! Who knew?
  3. Mumsnet tried to make a joke of it by introducing a Biscuit emoticon when someone has "no comment to make." Because Gordon Brown did not comment on what biscuit he likes. Get it? Ah ha ha ha. (He did eventually contact MNHQ to say he liked chocolate biscuits IIRC.)
  4. Biscuit is now used in a PA fashion to mean "I consider you to be an atrocious cunt but am too classy to type this."

I always thought it meant the OP was being daft/unreasonable/an idiot and had to go stand in the corner with a biscuit (softening the punishment). They could only 'join in' when they'd had a nice long think about why they'd been put in the corner to start with. And they'd finished their biscuit.

I think I think too much.

DoctorTwo · 25/01/2016 07:10

How can you be too classy to call somebody an atrocious cunt?

See I always thought the biscuit was shorthand for 'Your OP was so dickish that I'll be agog watching the resulting thread. So agog, in fact, that I'll have a cup of tea and a biscuit while I'm at it.'

What BalloonSlayer said, that's it, in total.

OP possibly you also need some explanation as to the correct usage of AiBU.
The initials stand for Am I Being Unreasonable? and the topic is for situations where the OP has acted in a way that might be construed as unreasonable. They are inviting comments to either agree or disagree.

I would suggest that Chat is a far more suitable topic for this thread and 50% of the other threads in AIBU

Don't mind me, I just like to see things nice and tidy around here.

Thanks, BalloonSlayer.

CuttedUpPear - I agree with you. I chose AIBU for traffic, but I suppose chat is busy too.

I thought GB had the questions read out to him and whoever was reading them skipped that one. I don't think he even knew about the question until the massive uproar about him not answering it.
