Happy to be proved otherwise but he is 90 this year and STILL making Sunday night docs that make our jaws drop.. Any other nominees welcome.

Incredible that he's 90!... He's more like a spritely 70 year old... Amazing. Hasn't he been doing nature documentaries since the late 40's... No one else gets close!

Flamingo1980 · 24/01/2016 20:20

I love how he's always so humble and also unwilling about taking credit. He will always make sure the credit goes to the animal researchers and the camera crews way before he gets any. Astonishing when a lot of people would happily bask in all the glory and take all of the credit which he easily could, but doesn't.
I can't bear to think of him dying it makes me want to cry!

Noodledoodledoo · 24/01/2016 20:28

Definitely a national treasure. Captivating to watch and listen to.

JacquelineChan · 24/01/2016 20:28

If you haven't already please purchase / download whatever / the series 'life on earth' it really shows you what a genius he is and is so fascinating. (You will laugh at the seventies graphics but the content is bang up to date)

And.....could this be the first MN thread with a big fat unanimous YANBU?!!!!Smile

londonrach · 24/01/2016 20:35

You might all enjoy this quiz - sideshow of DA with various animals. I certainly did when I came across it! It's on Sporcle, which is a free website. (You don't need to sign up to play but if you do sign up it keeps tally of your scores on all the quizzes you play.)

Topseyt · 24/01/2016 20:42

He is brilliant, and absolutely timeless. Almost as energetic as he was 30 or more years ago, and equally enthusiastic about his subject matter.

jonquil1 · 24/01/2016 20:47

Years ago a friend I knew then told me she had come off a flight back home he was on. His wife was waiting for him. He rushed over to her, gave her a huge bearhug and a ginormous snog.Smile All round, lovely, lovely, lovely man Star

Steben · 24/01/2016 20:49

Leelu6 · 24/01/2016 20:51

He's amazing.

LadyMaryofDownt0n · 24/01/2016 20:55

Ah I agree, he's fab! My kids all love him & have even named him as their roles model. That's the boys & the girls.. I couldn't be prouder! What a great man.

wasonthelist · 24/01/2016 21:03

He's a top geezer, but I am afraid Shami Chakrabarti would have to top my list - sorry.

patheticshark · 24/01/2016 21:04

i would nominate my dad, worked quietly in the film and tv industry from 1942. david attenborough comes second Wink

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 24/01/2016 21:12

Yanbu

He is wonderful out greatest treasure. ds and I love his show. I loved watching his programmes as a child and remember watching the gorilla encounter on Life on Earth it was amazing we had not seen anything like that on TV before and we were all totally blown away

Leelu6 · 24/01/2016 21:14

Good choice, wasonthelist 👍

Leelu6 · 24/01/2016 21:18

My brother met him (his hero) and was chuffed to have had a real conversation with him. He was very erudite. So many tv stars can't be arsed (which is their perog).

katheroo · 24/01/2016 21:18

My 8 year old wrote him a letter recently, and within a week he had replied with a lovely handwritten letter back. It really touched me as he'd sent him a fact about a whale in response to some facts my son had sent him. I knew he was a lovely man by the fact he'd made the effort to do that.

Gruntfuttock · 24/01/2016 21:31

jonquil1 It's so sad that his wife died in 1997. They'd been married for 47 years. A dreadful loss for him. Sad

Diggum · 24/01/2016 21:34

Totally agree.

My DSis attended a lecture of his a year or two ago and when asked by an audience member what his favourite animal was, he replied "Probably a 12 month old human baby".

Such an utterly charming personSmile.

Gruntfuttock · 24/01/2016 21:37

Oh that's so lovely Diggum Smile

FireCrotch · 25/01/2016 02:31

katheroo, how did you know where to send the letter? Is it the BBC? I think my ds would love to write to him. Lovely to know there's a chance of a response.

Serioussteve · 25/01/2016 04:03

Amazing down-to-earth, genuine and humble man. One of my idols.
