Really? (snow related)

This is the recommendation (BBC news) for surviving a snowstorm:

Make sure you have at least three gallons (13.5 litres) of drinking water per person, per day
Tape the windows with bubble wrap to keep the heat in
Use your dog to measure the snowfall

If we suddenly have a snowstorm, I do not have bubble wrap or a dog. We have a few bottles of water in the garage, but 13.5 liters per person per day?If we planned for a 3 day white out, that would be more than 200 litres of water (family of 5)

How does a dog measure snowfall anyway?

;(

You can tell how high the snow is when you let the dog out?!

ChampaleSocialist · 23/01/2016 23:27

I cannot physically drink 13l so you can have mine. I have some bubble wrap. And some rum. Sharesies?

AgentZigzag · 23/01/2016 23:28

Grin at using your dog to measure the snowfall.

Our dog has really short legs so we'd be fucked.

Surely some of the water could be swapped for carton drinks etc?

Although most people just wouldn't have the space to store that much water on the off chance would they?

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 23/01/2016 23:29

the water is for drinking, cooking and washing I suppose.

WorraLiberty · 23/01/2016 23:29

I've got a diabetic Jack Russell terrier who's rapidly going blind.

There's far more chance of him sticking me outside to check the snowfall than the other way around Grin

AgentZigzag · 23/01/2016 23:31

Mmm good idea, fuck the carton drinks, I'll go along with Champale and swap a large proportion some of my water for alcohol.

If you need any more water just fucking warm up some (non-yellow) snow!

SlinkyVagabond · 23/01/2016 23:31

You throw the dog out into the snow, if it vanishes, it's too deep to go out. (Depending on the breed obviously. I prefer to use cats-fairly standard height) hth.

AnthonyPandy · 23/01/2016 23:32

The dog thing is referencing this article from last year...

Catzpyjamas · 23/01/2016 23:32

Oh, I'm glad it said dog and not cat. Pyjamacat doesn't like snow so I don't think I could persuade him to go out in the storm with a ruler.Hmm
Also, where would you keep that much water?

acatcalledjohn · 23/01/2016 23:33

What if one only has cats?

Pipestheghost · 23/01/2016 23:33

What about a cat, would that do? Grin

Pipestheghost · 23/01/2016 23:34

X post!

grumpysquash2 · 23/01/2016 23:35

We only have guinea pigs, I don't think they would be much use!

Strangeoccurence · 23/01/2016 23:37

Could you scoop snow into a bottle or pan or something. Would that be drinkable once it melts?

Catzpyjamas · 23/01/2016 23:38

Years ago we had a Labrador. We had really heavy snow and it had crusted over so DDog could walk on top of it... until he did a pee. The snow around him melted, he dropped a foot down so we could only see his head. We had to dig him out of the yellow snow.

kelper · 23/01/2016 23:39

I could rent my dog out to thems with snow? Shes a whippet though, if you threw her into snow she'd give you a look and then shiver your house down

Catzpyjamas · 23/01/2016 23:39

Strangeoccurence, see above 're yellow snow

grumpysquash2 · 23/01/2016 23:40

Yes, lets share. We have quite a bit of wine too :)

BackforGood · 23/01/2016 23:41

I don't see why you couldn't just melt snow if you needed more water ? Confused Although 1.5 litres to drink is enough for most people. Why do they assume your water will be cut off in a snowstorm ?

Also, why do you need to know how deep it is? Hmm Perhaps, if you don't have a dog, you could use a ruler or a tape measure if it was somehow important to you to record this level of detail.

I do have bubble wrap though, so we'd be OK there.

grumpysquash2 · 23/01/2016 23:42

Catz
That's hilarious, were you videoing by any chance?

NewYearSameMe · 23/01/2016 23:43

I read that article and I thought it said at least 3 gallons per person for the 3 days, that would be a gallon per person per day.

Catzpyjamas · 23/01/2016 23:44

It was a long time ago. I think by the time my dad could have loaded a Betamax tape into his camcorder, the DDog would have frozen.Wink

clary · 23/01/2016 23:47

LOL grumpysquash yes we have guinea pigs too, was just thinking they would be a bit useless :D

Dawndonnaagain · 23/01/2016 23:49

Erm, I have a white dog...

Moreshabbythanchic · 23/01/2016 23:51

I have 4 cats, maybe I could stack them. I have wine and gin, I am prepared
