To hate our most expensive bedding?

For years we have been promising ourselves some expensive/posh/luxurious new bedding. We moved house and decided to begin a philosophy for spending which was "save up until we can afford the stuff we really want (even if it takes years) rather than just buy cheap which, on several occasions, has proven to be a false economy.

Anyhoo, the time came and we were ready to buy some really nice bedding. Bearing in mind that our current bedding was plain white primark, going to Next was a big jump in price (quadruple Infact).

We also bought a feather duvet and pillows from M&S as an extra luxury (we always have these when we stay at my in laws and loved them).

Anyhoo, just put the next bedding in the wash and the old primark bedding is back on and .... OMG .... It's about 1000 times nicer!! Softer. Smoother. Cosier.

I'm now dreading putting our expensive bedding back on. It's out of the tumble dryer and genuinely think a bin liner would be less rustley.

Just goes to show expensive does not equal the best.

I've always wanted to try expensive bedding but I'm too mean. Somebody tried to sell us pillows at £90 each. Shock

PrimalLass · 23/01/2016 22:21

I still have the Next duvet cover and pillowcase I bought for going to uni in 1992. It is still in perfect condition and gets rolled out for guests.

PassiveAgressiveQueen · 23/01/2016 22:24

My daughter next duvet cover is too big really annoying

Sorry but Next is terrible quality. Even basics like socks are bad quality from there

Generally in bedding you want to buy the highest cotton thread count. We have two sets for ours, both nice. One is 400 thread count, the other 800 thread. Like I said both are lovely but you really can feel the difference in the higher count. Both from the White company.

I would look at John Lewis or house of Fraser. H of Fraser often does good prices in the sales on bedding.

MairzyDoats · 23/01/2016 22:26

Namesnamenames put it on now, I promise you won't regret it! I got brushed cotton bottom sheet and pillowcases too and altogether they're the best purchase I've ever made Grin

BumWad · 23/01/2016 22:27

Mairzy I've also got some Catherine Lansfield bedding it's very good good quality

CaptainCrunch · 23/01/2016 22:33

Next is shite. I bought two sets and binned them both after one use. Tesco direct were better and that's saying something.

Oldraver · 23/01/2016 22:34

I've been really disappointed int he quality of my Next duvet cover..It now looks washed out and no doubt when I finally get the curtains back up will be a different shade..

PrimalLass · 23/01/2016 22:39

We bought brushed cotton bedding with stag heads on one side from Matalan. It is so cosy.

Horispondle · 23/01/2016 22:44

My friend used to be a buyer for Next and she thought it was scandalous how bad the sheets are.
I had lovely Primark sheets that were soft as anything and lasted years. Now all mine are from Dunelm.

sije · 23/01/2016 22:44

Brushed cotton always bobbles, sometimes it takes a while, but it always does in the end. It's like sleeping on toast crumbs.

Pedestriana · 23/01/2016 22:52

I don't do expensive bedding.
Mine is all old stuff. Some is ex-hotel stuff (but that's another story). Most of what I use now is from Primark, BHS or IKEA. Most of the standard stuff, particularly fitted sheets, tend to slide off our mattress as it's quite deep. Best for staying put has been ASDA. I think the sheets were £10 for a kingsize cotton one.

Leelu6 · 23/01/2016 22:59

I would sweat all night in brushed cotton.

ivykaty44 · 23/01/2016 23:01

House of Fraser sale bedding is cheaper than dunelm and very decent quality

Got two sheets, pillow cases and a duvet colour about three years ago and they are lovely to sleep under

EagleRay · 23/01/2016 23:06

I've got 500TC sateen fitted sheets, with H&M 100% linen duvet cover and pillowcases, and a brightly coloured linen sheet on top as a throw. All brand new today and off to jump into bed now! The H&M linen stuff feels divine!

About 17-18 years ago DH and I went to Egypt, the sheets on the boat (Nile Cruise) and hotels (5 in Cairo / 4 in Luxor) this was pre-DC Grin were amazingly soft and luxurious (not ironed on the boat but a comfy dimply effect.
We bought Egyptian cotton bedding in Costco, it was gorgeous.

Current bedding is Northern Nights from QVC, IIRC 700 thread count. It is lovely, thick, soft ,smooth (I don't iron it), but, we've had a dark blue and now a grey, the colour where DH sleeps fades (sweaty bugger Hmm ) so I've had to get rid of the sheet.

DD has Primark flannel at the moment.
DS has Ikea.

Ohhh God the bedding debate .....I swear it may break me......
When he received his redundancy pay, as a "treat" OH bought an alpaca duvet. It cost fckin £300........and I hate it. Hate hate hate it! It's thin, and crinkly, and too hot for me. Bloody thing!

And to add insult to injury, now he's post o.o and struggling to sleep at night, he scruffy sleeps in the spare bed, so isn't even under the damn thing!

Seriously tempted to swap with him - the hateful super king monstrosity for my lovely £8 Wilkos standard double one that's in the spare bed. Can't believe how much I loathe it, and it's made worse by the cost!
I feel your expensive bedding pain!

As I suspected - the Egyptians keep the best stuff for themselves, like the fruit I have on holiday there ;)
