I bought some sauerkraut. I don't have the faintest idea what to do with it. But I heard it was good for you....so on a whim in Sainsbury's I put in in the trolley. Yes I should have thought this through. But there it is.

What does it 'go' with??

Sauerkraut is ruined by the people who have started putting pineapple in it!

mawbroon · 23/01/2016 22:36

YY to mixing it with mashed tatties. Chop it up small if it's long stringy bits and add it to the boiling tattie pan for the last few minutes.

Serve with chops, gravy and smoked sausage as per PP

I like it in soup.
Soften onions and carrots in butter, add sauerkraut, stock, a tin of butter beans, and chopped sausage. Cook up with dumplings.

I like it with smoked mackerel and salad. It goes with anything fatty and rich.

For the health benefits you need the sort that has only two ingredients: cabbage and salt. This means it has bee made by fermentation rather than pickled.

Commercial sauerkraut is usually devoid of the good bacteria that make it so good and anti inflammatory. It's the one you make at home that's fizzing with the right stuff

jonquil1 · 23/01/2016 22:54

We like it added to sautéed onions, cooked with a little chicken stock and a sprinkling of caraway seeds. And with big chunks of belly pork in it.

MrsSchadenfreude · 23/01/2016 22:54

PINEAPPLE CHUNKS? What sort of sacrilege is that? Shock

Make Bigos with it, or just have it hot with hot dogs, or with kassler (can you get Kassler here? It's sort of a bacon chop - I guess gammon would do), or some smoked sausage and mash.

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 23/01/2016 22:57

PINEAPPLE CHUNKS?
it's delicious. try it.

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 23/01/2016 22:58

smoked gammon is a good kassler substitute.

SleepyRoo · 23/01/2016 23:01

Eat it directly from the jar with a fork. Says this pregnant woman.

antimatter · 23/01/2016 23:51

Polish eat kraut cold too!

SingingSamosa · 23/01/2016 23:57

She really liked it, though proceeded to burp for the rest of the evening. I smelt it, it was quite reasonable...

I read this completely the wrong way!!! Shock Confused

Krampus · 24/01/2016 00:02

I am with the throw it away crowd. I do feel bad saying that becuase I do love my veg and think the idea is great. Maybe it's a flavour best served to cut through pork? I hate pork ☺

RaisedByWolves · 24/01/2016 00:06

It's nice in salads. And i like the juice. But only buy fresh. The one with wine tastes a bit wrong to me.

Oldisthenewblack · 24/01/2016 15:30

I have some quorn frankfurters, I might do something late with those and the sauerkraut. Though I can barely read the instructions of the frankfurters so will have to look up the cooking instructions online. Unless anyone here is familiar with quorn frankfurters???
