AIBU to throw a moody because my DH got me a top of the range netbook?

Sounds terribly ungrateful, I know even as I read it but can I explain before I am condemned.
I have a cursed history with laptops and tablets so when I get one that survives and I like it I will do whatever it takes to keep the wretched thing. I don't care what operating system is on it, if I find it easy to work with then woe betide the the person who decides that my laptop is obsolete.
My Uni decided that and it was decided that I would be issued with a brand spanking new laptop....I was rather glad when this didn't happen.
At Christmas I relented to my rather large laptop being replaced by one of Dell's ultraportable models - cracking, loved it but back at uni it wouldn't go on the wifi - any OS below XP is deemed a security risk say 'computer says no' department thus no certificate. Husband sends out upgrade OS disc, but not before the charger dies - no one at the uni has a replacement. Ordered a charger - sent without lead, what sort of moron does that? Sorry bad day.
Husband may have job over by uni, hurrah, hurrah he has multiple leads, boo, boo job in another direction.
DH calls to say he has bought this netbook for me. I mean it is the top of the range it comes apart to be a tablet and I know we can't afford it but it's bought and paid for. Thing is my husband thinks everyone takes to IT as easily as he does. I truly struggle to import favourites and faff about rebuilding one pc as the last one was. I find it just so much stress while he actively enjoys it.
Thing is learning about a new OS and how the netbook flips from being touchscreen to type would fascinate him. I cant find half the stuff in windows because I'm happier with Linux.
I have to get this beast set up for Monday and I can't 'relax and enjoy it' as he says.
I've thanked him but I think he bought something that he thought would remedy the problem without taking into account my IT skills. Now it tells me the HD space is low and dropbox cant synch jeez how can I free up space when I've hardly put the basics on it - I'd have been better with a lead to connect to the charger for my old laptop.
ungrateful non-techy cow that I am.

I sort of get that too coz you didn't ask for it, so in a bit of a way how dare he just go ahead and assume (this does annoy me). Lovely but friggin annoying all the same.

I recently acquired a MacBook and was so used to using my other one. It drove me mad for a bit but Im getting to love it. I switched to get some stuff off of the other one a few days ago and kept "pressing" centre of the curser block thing (very un-techy) and that drove me mad. Im still frustrated over certain things and have to keep googling bloody utube and things still take me longer but its the same as anything new. I want a book for dummies but apparently they no longer exist.

Just grit your teeth and hang on in there.

Directed at potato and her yawnz Cas. She's so over it that she had to post quite a lot Hmm

emotionsecho · 23/01/2016 01:14

If I understand correctly you've now got a brand new Dell ultra portable laptop that you are comfortable/happy with using which requires a cable for the charger and instead of buying a cable for the charger your dh bought a brand new top of the range netbook which you can't really afford? Once you have the cable for the charger and the correct OS the laptop will work fine with the University network?

Go out tomorrow and get what you need for the laptop and either return or sell the netbook as you don't need or want it and it doesn't solve the problem you were trying to solve.

Miserable IT fuckers Grin
FGS NOTSO You're not allowed to have first world problems!

TheExMotherInLaw · 23/01/2016 01:19

I understand. I threw a hissyfit when my PC upgraded to windoze 10, as I couldn't find what I needed quickly enough to finish the project I was on, so rolled it back. I have Linux on my netbook, which I am slowly getting to grips with, and my little Hudl is a mystery. I'm not historically computer illiterate; back in the day I've stripped down a PC and replaced motherboard, etc, used to be a dab hand at 3.1, but it's just all swirled past too quickly for me to keep up with. I understand the need to USE the thing, not spend time learning about it. Spending the money when you didn't have it to spare is a totally other infuriating thing.
DD's DP calls it 'putting on his grateful face' when he's given something he doesn't actually want.

Potatoface2 · 23/01/2016 01:33

yeah shut the door.....yawn.....if you were watching someone die right now you would know how trivial this is

PruneCat · 23/01/2016 01:34

The irony of posting 'what on earth does LMGTFY mean?' is utterly fabulous.

FrackingHell · 23/01/2016 01:39

potato if you were watching someone die right now you wouldn't be on mumsnet being a total tool. stop attempting some sort of moral superiority, it's really really embarrassing for you.

NightWanderer · 23/01/2016 02:09

To be fair, it does sound like the OP is making a drama out nothing. Yes, it's a bit of a faff when you get a new computer to get used to it BUT really you are causing so much work for everyone by being such a stick-in-the-mud. I suspect your husband is sick of hearing about it. Just ask IT at work for a new computer and take the other one back. It's hard but technology moves fast these days and it's important for your work that you keep up and I say that with kindness.

TheExMotherInLaw · 23/01/2016 02:23

So, what DOES does LMGTFY mean?
You may be all so cool, laid back and tecchie, but not all of us are fluent in acronyms, and that really doesn't matter, even if it does make you feel sneerily superior. We are allowed first world problems here, y'know.

DoctorTwo · 23/01/2016 02:38

I take it you mean he's got you one of the 'top of the range' netbooks with a risible 32GB SSD hard drive. If that's the case I see your point. If so, YANBU, he should've taken your inability with tech and got you a more traditional model. I suggest getting an external hard drive (1TB for about £50) and maybe load from that with a Linux distro and have all your programs loaded on it, especially as you're more comfortable with Linux.

Oh, and Windows10 is basically spyware masquerading as an OS, so you're much better booting with Linux from an external drive if you value your privacy.

sheldonesque · 23/01/2016 02:50

exmotherinlaw I am not cool, laid back or techie. Nor am I fluent in acronyms.

I promise I'm not that sneery unless I'm dissecting Made in Chelsea or discussing a certain colleague. Grin

It means 'let me google that for you'. Which I found out by googling it.

I got the irony of it. I will take the shame. Smile

Notsobadpharma · 23/01/2016 04:25

oh sure I'll just crowd fund the ebay charger until my next student loan cheque arrives in february because we sure as shit can't afford anything else. Or maybe potatoface with the millions from non-problems could lend me some dosh.

Thank you DoctorTwo, thats why I didn't want windows 10. I do value my privacy; everyone I know who has got Windows 10 has had problems.

Anniegetyourgun · 23/01/2016 05:03

We have a "spare" PC that came with the awful Windows 8, so I updated it to 10 immediately. As a result I've decided to stick to 7 on my own PC for the foreseeable future (basically until a usable version of 10 comes out). It's not just me being an old Luddite either. DS4 updated his when 10 came out and rolled it back to 7 the same day. We like 7. It works.

I thought ranting about being given a lovely but unaffordable and unnecessary present was what AIBU is chiefly for. And this is the First World, as it happens.

Notsobadpharma · 23/01/2016 21:34

The problem can be rectified be purchasing the lead on ebay for a few quid, I may have a part time job but I'm a student and this sodding laptop has just sucked up all the spare cash. It also as I have discovered, having solid state memory little enough capacity so when I get paid or get my loan mini sd card to expand the memory or maybe Potatoface could lend me some dosh for all the millions with people posting stupid irrelevant problems - you must be so well known for your empathy.
