...to murder the poinsettia?

I'm not a fan of houseplants. DH is, so we have 4. Three of them I grin and bear as there are somewhat sentimental reasons for having them in our home.

The poinsettia is an annoying little bastard that exudes some kind of substance that creates a disgusting sticky film on anything it is placed on or near, which looks revolting and is a pita to clean.

In spite of umpteen pleas DH refuses to get rid of/rehome it.

WIB really U to water it generously with vinegar or some other noxious substance and finish it off?

Don't kill your DP'S plant, you would notlike it if he ruined something you liked.
I don't like them either (am waiting for mine to die but it's holding strong), when DP had a plant I wanted out (bugs issues) I suggested swapping it for an other one. Look itf there is not one you would hate less.

if you have them they will look like white fluff or brown lumps (harder to spot) here is a pic of both (warning v v v ugly)

deste · 22/01/2016 22:16

My poinsettia had his last drink today.

goingtotown · 22/01/2016 22:17

Put it outside & let Jack Frost do the deed.

DickDewy · 22/01/2016 22:17

Bleurgh - I hate poinsettias. KTB.

hairylittlegoblin · 22/01/2016 22:21

You kept it alive for 3 years?!

I can kill them in 3 days. Send it to me and I'll put it out of its misery. You can tell DH it's gone on a spa weekend for a quick detox.

FlamingoFandango · 22/01/2016 22:24

But he'll never know it was me Qwebec...and I've been waiting for 3 years for nature to take it's course

Going to check it for tiny gremlins fingers crossed

Grin Goblin - trust me I most certainly have bugger all to do with its longevity.

DH has a weird knack with houseplants. He found a 4inch stub of yucca can in a tub behind the shed when we moved into our house. It's now a 5ft tall bush in the corner of our sitting room.

I'm not sure it's got bugs - there are some brown markings on the leave but nothing moving & no white fluff. You can see the sticky gunk on the leaves - it looks like it's been badly sprayed with varnish Confused

Feel your pain OP.
DH's grandma bought us a poinsettia as a housewarming gift (Hmm)
I hate house plants, but felt mean just throwing it away....
So every time DH left for work, I placed said plant next to the cats litter tray, and let her piss in the soil a few times. Evil plant was dead in a week, no questions asked Grin

FlamingoFandango · 22/01/2016 22:49

Wonder if that would work with guinea pig wee?

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/01/2016 22:52

I'm a massive fan of house plants.

Poinsettias though? Let the fecker die.

Oldraver · 22/01/2016 23:41

I always kill Pointsettas, usually before 12th night. Didnt have one this year as we have a kitten

I used to kill all house plants and even managed to kill the plants in the fish tank

Send it to me

FlamingoFandango · 23/01/2016 00:02

I'd much rather have a kitten than a poinsettia but DH says no Sad

MoonlightandMusic · 23/01/2016 00:02

Salt might work too?

You could always preserve a leaf for DH to remember it by if you're feeling vaguely guilty. Grin

FlamingoFandango · 23/01/2016 00:12

Not sure I'm going to feel that guilty.

MoonlightandMusic · 23/01/2016 00:16

Really? Now, why am I not surprised? Wink Grin Grin

In my defence, I tolerate the other triffids - will even polish the peace lily's leaves occasionally!

I'm in Oz and apparently I can plant mine out in March. I usually murder mine in England but I'm just ignoring this one until I can shove it outside.

Anniegetyourgun · 23/01/2016 05:48

Am astonished you are actually having to work at killing off a poinsettia. My mother bought one every year and they usually just about survived until Twelfth Night. Feeble things.

Mind you, I thought peace lilies were practically indestructible but managed to kill one off recently without even trying Blush

Anniegetyourgun · 23/01/2016 05:48

ps Smuggle the kitten in, you know it makes sense.

FlamingoFandango · 23/01/2016 08:04

The peace lily predates our relationship (20+ years)!

Our house becomes 'Poinsettia Rescue' in the run up to Christmas - I hate seeing plants dying in supermarkets because no-one waters them, so buy them up when they're reduced to 10p each and bring them home to resuscitate. We had over a dozen this year Blush. I don't particularly like houseplants, but can't bear the cruelty..........

We also have an ageing aspidistra which was given to me by a friend. It's as ugly as sin but I can't get rid of it because it belonged to friend's mother, who died. It is a sacred trust. Friend obviously not stupid.

FlamingoFandango · 23/01/2016 08:20

A dozen poinsettias?! Shock

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 23/01/2016 08:25

I will come over and stand next to it. That's usually enough to kill plants. Weeds however, thrive in any garden I've had. My bonzai tree looked like I'd kicked the shit out of it after just 5 days in my care.....
