FFS.
I'm Irish.
Eligible to work here.
Want to work.
Went to agency meeting today ahead of job interview.
Apparently, you can't work here without a passport unless you are British.

Am I the last to know?

Oh - and before you ask, passport was stolen. It will take 6 weeks for new one to issue.

Such bollox.

Wilde I'm so sorry. Don't lose hope, the right job may be just around the corner.

balletgirlmum · 23/01/2016 14:31

Commiserations Wilde - hopefully the next opportunity will be even better.

Cricket expired passport & NI letter is fine.

PagesOfABook · 23/01/2016 20:08

You seem to feel victimised for being Irish - when this is just a standard rule that applies to everyone

Why do you think it has anything in particular to do with Irish people?

I'm Irish too and I find the way you are going on about this a bit silly - but can appreciate you're stressed about the job

NinjaClaws · 23/01/2016 20:53

Ah, really sorry you didn't get the job. Better luck next time.

Thanks for posting the TT clip. I'm recovering from surgery and almost burst my stitches. Grin

Yes, all those poor innocent employers using illegal immigrants as cheap labour! Why should they take any responsibility? Blame the government!!!

How widespread is the problem? How about dealing with the offenders instead of making the vast majority who haven't done anything wrong prat about with daft paperwork that doesn't actually do anything?

bringing in your passport proves you don't have to prat around with daft paperwork

cricketballs · 24/01/2016 15:46

I dont have NI letter, was just commenting that we have been asked for NI card despite them no longer being issued.

I have found my expired passport, birth certificate and current E11 card, other colleagues are struggling with even that

No, bringing in your passport for some wonk to photocopy IS daft paperwork - and pointless in most cases.

balletgirlmum · 24/01/2016 21:24

Thanks for calling people like me a daft wonk.

The government has made it very clear though s I shall continue being a wink. Whether I agree or disagree I have as much choice in the matter as I have in whether I stop tax out of people's wages.

wasonthelist · 24/01/2016 21:27

I'm calling the government daft - for making you be a wonk :)

merrymouse · 25/01/2016 06:31

How about dealing with the offenders

How are you supposed to identify the offending employers if they have the excuse that they aren't obliged to ask for any I.D. so how are they supposed to know who their employees are?

This is really straightforward compared to the other responsibilities that employers have towards employees.
