To think I should not be asked to pay for this mistake?

i own a little property which I rent out.
A few weeks ago I noticed that the perfectly good garden gate had been replaced with a new one asked my agent to find out what was going on.
It turns out that next-doors gate had come down and their contractor replaced my gate whilst they were at it. There were two matching gates into my property and although the new gate is fine it doesn't match. I had no plans to replace the gate and no contact was made with my tenant nor my agent.
After a few calls back and forth, the agent managing next-door is suggesting that the gate looks great and that as my neighbour has paid for the work ( which they admit has been done in error) I should make a financial contribution towards it as a goodwill gesture.
If I am not willing to do this they will get the gate removed and I will have to get my own gate put up.
I don't think I should be being asked to pay and since I don't want to pay I think they should arrange for my gate to be reinstated at no cost to me,

I agree that you must now own the new gate. It is on your property. I would try and contact someone who would really be able to help you properly rather than amataur guess work by us Mumsnetters. I would say it's your property whether or not they installed it. They can't remove it from your property as it's theft. I imagine they are getting annoyed with you not playing ball as they are well aware that they have absolutely no leg to stand on at all.

ooops terrible spelling....I mean amateur

You need a solicitor OP.

You need your gate rehung, and a goodwill gesture from them as they criminally damaged your property. Threaten calling the police.

Stop being so nice! Being a pushover is not doing you any good.

I recommend you put this on this forum for some excellent advice, a real stress and money saver. Anyone with a boundary ,garden, neighbour should have a read.

I'm going agaisnt the grain if i know one of my DC are having a play date i would always offer the money up front to avoid cross wires. I think its just as rude to expect people to pay for their child but she shouldn't of asked you for the money either. Give her the money and leave it as that but next tome your DC goes on a play date offer to cover the cost. They are taking your child out.

Just curiosity, but what are the agents paid to do?

Should they not be looking out for rotting gate posts?

bloodyteenagers · 21/01/2016 14:40

Don't pay.
It will give them the green light to do other repairs to your property. This week a gate, next week they decide there's an issue
