to ask how I add 's' on to my sons name.

I have a 2 week old son. I'm writing thank you notes for all the generous gifts he has received. So I started writing "thank you so much for Rufus's presents" but in a moment of sleep deprived/ post labor fog I cannot for the life of me work out if it's Rufus' or Rufus's. So I've changed to writing something else however I really should know this!

Please help me out!

Rufus' (you can use either but

MirandaGoshawk · 20/01/2016 21:24

I was taught that the rule is you spell it as you say it, as in Rufus's, apart from when there is an s in the middle of the name, so Moses' and Jesus'. But Rufus' is also acceptable these days. Have never heard of the 'one syllable' thing - you live and learn! So yes, pick which you like (Rufus' or Rufus's) and stick with it.

Nicky333 · 20/01/2016 21:24

You can use either but to me, Rufus' looks much better and neater. I'd always use just an apostrophe after a name that ends with S.

ScarlettDarling · 20/01/2016 21:25

I always add the 's to names which end in s.

The only exception is my son's friend Louis which just is wrong with the 's!

NorthernRosie · 20/01/2016 21:26

I'm astounded Rufus' (Rufus's) mum is managing to write thank you letters 2 weeks in. I'm 6 months on and not sure I ever got beyond text thank you's!!

tibbawyrots · 20/01/2016 21:32

Great name and you've been able to write thank you cards at 2 weeks?

impressed

Think I was still at the stage of 6pm and still in my dressing gown...

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 20/01/2016 21:39

NorthernRosie I agree. Everyone else on the thread is COMPLETELY missing the point.

OP HAS A 2 WEEK OLD BABY. SHE IS HAND WRITING THANK YOU CARDS.

I think OP must be some kind of superhero or alien or something. I don't think I had even showered at two weeks, never mind keeping up with the etiquette of thank you cards and certainly not debating the finer points of grammar therein.

Well done OP, you are my new hero Flowers

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 20/01/2016 21:39

Ah tibba didn't see you there but I agree with you!

LobsterQuadrille · 20/01/2016 21:40

Congratulations - and Rufus is an excellent name.

i thought that technically the precedent was set by the monarchy with the spelling of St James's Palace and that Rufus's present is correct. Depends if you want to go with or against the monarchy perhaps.

MrsUltra · 20/01/2016 21:40

Rufus's

LordOfMisrule · 20/01/2016 21:41

I'm a Fliss, and I use Fliss'

pot39 · 20/01/2016 21:43

I've had one of those for 20 years.
I used to say Rufus' all the time, especially when he was born (like Jesus') and it's good to know what I should use
Congratulations on choosing the world's best name. And good luck on the next child's if you have one.
A jolly hard act name wise to follow.
I should point out that he has been an absolute joy and has grown into a 6' 5" handsome charming man, as well as irritating as hell, grumpy, self centred, eye wateringly expensive.............

He also gets called Roofarse. Useless, Rufi, still a great name

tibbawyrots · 20/01/2016 21:44

hearts :)

Tillyscoutsmum · 20/01/2016 21:45

Technically, it should be Rufus's but I agree Rufus' looks "neater". If I wasn't such a lazy arse who never quite got round to writing thank you letters, then I'd have had the same issue with my 'Fergus' Smile

Congratulations and kudos for your commitment to grammatical correctness 2 weeks post birth Wink

BikeRunSki · 20/01/2016 21:46

I always refer to Bridget Jones's Diary in these situations.

TwoLittleBlooms · 20/01/2016 21:47

Congratulations on the birth!! Such a lovely name.

No idea though I have the same issue - I have an Iris. I have been writing it Iris's (read that it is wrote that way if you sound like there are two s's then you add apostrophe + s) Basically like MirandaGoshawk said (although she said it much better than me!!)

ShesGotLionsInHerHeart · 20/01/2016 21:47

I have a Harris and I always have to stop and think about it. And I'm still never sure!

IHeartKingThistle · 20/01/2016 21:54

It's nothing to do with plurals. Either is fine.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 20/01/2016 22:05

Change his name - it'll be easier in the long run... :o

NiNoKuni · 20/01/2016 22:08

Either is fine (also according to the BBC), although I'd tend to write it as I'd say it - so Rufus's as I'd say 'Rufusiz'.

Many congrats on your baby and superhuman note-writing efforts!

cariadlet · 20/01/2016 22:14

According to one of my grammar books "You just add an apostrophe after the final s for the singular words ending in s (the boss's office, the glass's colour) but for the plurals ending in es you just add an apostrophe (the glasses' box, the bosses' meeting).

But on a grammar course I was told that "The convention is to drop the extra s after singular nouns ending in s eg Jesus' birthday, James' book".

So I suppose you can do whatever you want to, because nobody agrees what is right or wrong!

BramblePie · 20/01/2016 22:17

My friend Chris taught me it would be Chris' and therefore I would do Rufus'. If it has an apostrophe you don't do the second s.

PrimalLass · 20/01/2016 22:26

It is absolutely Rufus's.

captaincake · 20/01/2016 22:55

Rufus's here

captaincake · 20/01/2016 22:57

I'd be so impressed and shamed because I didn't managed them at all never mind late that you sent me a thank you card when you have a newborn that I wouldn't notice if you used the wrong name entirely!
