to wonder why people give so much medicine to their kids?

I am totally open to being told IABU here, am just looking for opinions really.

DS3 (7mo) has a cough and a cold. I posted a 'go the fuck to sleep' type status on Facebook earlier and had lots of comments from friends telling me to give Calpol/Nurofen. For a cold? Really? Also some comments suggesting Vicks on his feet, which seems more sensible..

Do people really give Calpol every time their child has the sniffles? Is there actually a point to it, or is it just the done thing to dose a child up every time they cry now? Don't get me wrong, I do give my children medicine if they have a very high temperature or are in pain, but I try not to give it often, and I wouldn't give it for a cough/lack of sleep.

Is it just me?

Ignore the woo

People that may have different ideas or 'evidence' of things to you is not 'woo'

My Dr in the past has said different things to me about dosages to what posters have said here.

I've not called them 'woo'

Kanga59 · 20/01/2016 21:55

My drug of choice for non-sleepers is Piriton so yanbu, your friends are not being very helpful at all, are they

BertrandRussell · 20/01/2016 21:58

Be very careful with Piriton. I used to give my dd hallucinations and kept her awake for hours seeing pink pigeons............

DisappointedOne · 20/01/2016 21:58

Funny. The NHS advice doesn't major on calpol for treating colds in babies and children either. One page even suggests chest rubs.......

www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Cold-common/Pages/Commoncoldinchildren.aspx

TheCatsMeow · 20/01/2016 21:59

Fun claiming home remedies work as well as others and saying "calpol is bad because it's unnatural I have no evidence but it's unnatural" is woo.

bumbleymummy · 20/01/2016 22:01

It mentions drinking water/warm drinks too! Shock Wink

TheCatsMeow · 20/01/2016 22:01

liquid paracetamol or ibuprofen can help ease a fever and discomfort – check the dosage instructions on the packaging and never give aspirin to children under the age of 16

bumbleymummy · 20/01/2016 22:02

No one on this thread has said that though Cats have they?

bumbleymummy · 20/01/2016 22:03

That was in reply to your post of 21:59

TheCatsMeow · 20/01/2016 22:03

Not exactly but the attitude seems to be we'll try everything first THEN calpol when in reality it's a safe easy way to relieve discomfort

TheCatsMeow · 20/01/2016 22:03

Oh right yes someone did bumbley!

DisappointedOne · 20/01/2016 22:06

Nobody is disputing that, cats.

Did you miss the rest, drink, steamy room, raise head of bed advice that surrounded that single point?

No mention of headaches for children's colds earlier, and they didn't say children with colds feel exactly the same as adults - there is no difference so treat the same either. Odd that. Perhaps you should contact them. Smile

DisappointedOne · 20/01/2016 22:07

Calpol is the 3rd suggestion from the NHS. Not the first. Drinks and rest comes first. Wonder why..........

PunkrockerGirl · 20/01/2016 22:10

You're right bumble. I have a thing about anyone who spouts bollocks and has their own agenda.

I've disagreed, had spats with many on mn. But you're the only person I've had pm's about advising me not to engage. From people whose opinion I generally respect.
Think on.

DisappointedOne · 20/01/2016 22:11

Try the "treatment" tab. Advises against decongestants (such as lemsip) for more than a week because they can make congestion worse. A medicine that makes the thing it's treating worse. Wonder why I don't reach for those!

"Vapour rubs can help babies and young children breathe more easily when they have a cold. Apply the rub to your child's chest and back. Don't apply it to nostrils as that could cause irritation and breathing difficulties."

No mention of not Vicks or being dangerous to use on under 2s. So putting it further away from baby's nostrils, say, on the soles of the feet, doesn't seem so crazy after all. Grin

DisappointedOne · 20/01/2016 22:13

Oh, and there's zinc too. Think my bingo card is full.

TheCatsMeow · 20/01/2016 22:14

Disappointed they're not in order Hmm it's bullet pointed not ranked in order

And no ones said rest and water isn't a good idea but it's not going to do much on its own.

And Vicks says on the packet. It's not for the NHS to mention which ones are suitable on that page.

The woo is strong in this thread

TheCatsMeow · 20/01/2016 22:15

To be fair Disappointed I have seen you on other threads spouting this natural is best bollocks... I don't normally remember posters either

DisappointedOne · 20/01/2016 22:18

But I haven't said that natural is best......... ever.

DisappointedOne · 20/01/2016 22:19

I never have seen the point of cats.

DisappointedOne · 20/01/2016 22:19

Or their meows.

bumbleymummy · 20/01/2016 22:19

Yes, so you've said previously punk. Funny, I've had lots of PMs telling me just to ignore people like you. Seriously though, it's childish and boring and you're derailing the thread. Take your own agenda elsewhere.

Good link DisappointedOne.

Cats, actually yes, rest and water can do plenty on their own. Sometimes it's all you need. So recommendations on the NHS website are 'woo' and 'natural is best bollocks' now? Grin

Nottodaythankyouorever · 20/01/2016 22:20

The woo is strong in this thread

Jeez how old are you?

I'm not a big fan of natural remedies, but to name call just because you don't agree with another persons view is childish.

Canshopwillshop · 20/01/2016 22:21

If you post on FB about it don't be surprised if people try and give you some helpful advice. If you know best about what to do then don't moan about it on FB - simple!
Maybe your DS is feeling rubbish in which case why not give him a bit of calpol? If you have a cough and cold don't you ever think about a bit of paracetamol. Alternatively you can both just have a shit nights sleep and you can play the martyr on FB tomorrow?!

TheCatsMeow · 20/01/2016 22:25

So recommendations on the NHS website are 'woo' and 'natural is best bollocks' now?

No ones said that. But alone it won't do much. It's not an either or thing, your best bet is to rest and to take something
