To be really disappointed by War and Peace on BBC?

It seems to be a string of little cameos strung together without thought. Lots of pretty girls and pretty boys and a few naked tits and bums. I cannot believe that War and Peace is sooooooooo dull.

Much prefer Deutschland 83 on C4, a proper original and intriguing drama!

bakeoffcake · 18/01/2016 19:14

it is so beautifully shot.

The dance scene last night was just magical. I haven't read the book but this programme has inspired me to try it!

Lauren15 · 18/01/2016 19:14

Personally I'm really enjoying it. I've never read the book which is probably for the best. The sets and costumes are amazing. Ade Edmondson is brilliant in his role.

Strictlyobsessed · 18/01/2016 19:17

I like it too but again haven't read the book I'm sure its war and peace light but it's Sunday night viewing but I like something easy on a Sunday night. It's not as awful as Downtown which was totally unbelievable in how they treated the staff and used to the few times I watched it drive me nuts! if you looking to watch something powerful try watching making a murder, I've just finished and I cant stop thinking about it.

OttiliaVonBCup · 18/01/2016 19:18

With Natasha at this stage it's about the youth, and lightness and not a care in the word, which the actress just don't have.

It reminds me of Demelza, which had the same gormless look about her.

OttiliaVonBCup · 18/01/2016 19:19

Having said all that, I still haven't seen last night's episode, so it might be getting better.

PedantPending · 18/01/2016 19:20

The book is wonderful. The 1972 BBC version was acclaimed, this time round it is anodyne in the extreme. Very disappointing.

stonecircle · 18/01/2016 19:22

Oh I love it. Also read it after watching the 1970s version with Anthony Hopkins as Pierre. I thought the ballroom scene was lovely but the duel scene was simply stunning. I'm thoroughly enjoying it and am tempted to re-read.

debbietheduck · 18/01/2016 19:27

I love it! Enjoyed the book but the lightweight TV version is just the thing on a Sunday evening. I think Paul Dano (Pierre) is brilliant. And the whole thing just looks so beautiful.

Upthenoonoo · 18/01/2016 19:29

I have never read the book so no expectations but am loving the series.

Ringadingdingdong · 18/01/2016 19:32

It's OK, not as good as I thought it was going to be. I do recommend Deutschland 83 on C4 though, very good.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 18/01/2016 20:30

I'm not loving it... and I did love the book. It's a bit fluffy and with a few notable exceptions (some of the older actors and Pierre), I don't think the acting is up to much. A bit disappointed.

Missdread · 18/01/2016 20:48

Oh it's fabulous! Paul Dano is outstanding: I am loving it! Another shout for the excellent Deutschland 83 too! Well worth a watch!

Girlwhowearsglasses · 18/01/2016 20:48

Y y y to destiny up thread

Deutschland 83 is brilliant. Totally doing it for me, And a tiny bit of remembered 80s nostalgia (a character saw a Walkman for the first time in yesterday's episode), definite humour, thriller, suspense, beautiful people, music, oh and I definitely want a batwing dress with silver stripes now

Naicehamshop · 18/01/2016 20:50

Really enjoying it - agree that it is beautifully shot.

Provencalroseparadox · 18/01/2016 21:22

It looks beautiful but some of the dialogue is off and some of the acting is overdone

hollieberrie · 18/01/2016 21:27

I love it. Have cried several times already - esp. when Pierre realised Natasha and Dolokhov had betrayed him.

Madeyemoodysmum · 18/01/2016 21:44

I'm loving it too. Looking forward to every episode

Lauren15 · 18/01/2016 21:47

Paul Dano is fantastic. I'd never heard of him before but he really stands head and shoulders over James Norton and Lily James.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 18/01/2016 21:56

I debating watching it on catch up. I read it in my late teens & loved it. I've got the Anthony Hopkins version on dvd (Amazon if anyone wants it) thatII've watched again during night feeds with each of the DCs.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 18/01/2016 21:59
  • that I've- damn spacing at the end of the box!
DrDreReturns · 18/01/2016 22:10

If you've read it - is it true that some characters are referred to by different names? I've heard that it's really hard to follow the story because characters are called by their Christian names, patronymic, diminutive etc so to a non Russian it becomes very hard to follow. I suppose it depends on the translation but it has put me off reading it!
I am enjoying the series, I agree it is beautifully shot.

JessieMcJessie · 18/01/2016 22:20

I am really enjoying it. Nice to see Ade Edmonson and Jim Broadbent is fab too. I like the battle scenes with the Hussars wearing their jackets nonchalantly one- shouldered.

OttiliaVonBCup · 18/01/2016 22:27

It's true DrDre. It's not different names though it's parts of the same name plus lots of diminutive versions, Russians love their diminutives.

That's always the case with Russian literature.

EasyToEatTiger · 18/01/2016 23:28

I've been watching the 1972 version on youtube. What a difference! The new one may be blingy but I really couldn't care less about the characters. For such an epic story this sort of matters. Like quite a lot. I get more information from the back of a cornflake packet. Which is quite boring.
