To live in hope the growth scan is well out and my baby wont be affected by the death of my mother? ?

Hi all need to cut a long story short but basically I have had a dreadful two years with all sorts of problems including serious health issues, lots of loss and more recently the unexpected and sudden death of my mother who I adored. I am having regular growth scans due to having had a cancer diagnosis in 2014. Anyway last week I went and the baby had only put on two ounces. He was 4lb 11z at the 33 week scan, then at the 35 weeks scan he was said to be 4lb and 13 oz. I go back again on Thursday, they said if he hasn't put weight on then I have to have an induction. Could the scan be out? Has anyone had such a blip and the following week been okay?

Also I keep reading about the impact of maternal stress and anxiety and the risk s of ADHD, behavioural issues, heart disease in later life to name but a few are terrifying me. Anyone else had a really bad well horrific pregnancy and baby has been okay? I keep thinking if this growth thing has happened its just the start of a whole host of problems to come.

thanks for taking the time to read and respond.

If they are saying no growth could you ask them to check the umbilical cord?

Mabel80 · 19/01/2016 11:32

They are saying the cord and blood flow looks fine. I really don't want an induction particularly if the scans are inaccurate.

AddToBasket how far along were you in the pregnancy when your mum passed if you don't mind me asking?

I had very hit and miss growth scans throughout my pregnancy. I second the posters who said speak to your midwife

There is no solid data at the moment to say that that level of anxiety and stress will harm the baby.
There is a lot of crap on the Internet, but the only real, measurable effects have been found in women in utterly dire situations ( we are talking war, torture, famine, truly extreme stuff.) even then, the effect is surprisingly small. They really are well insulated in there - we'd have died out as a species if they weren't!

The effects of stress will be on you , so do whatever you need to to make yourself feel better.
And external measurements just aren't reliable - I was measuring ahead the whole way and noises were being made about massive babies. Ds was 7 lb at birth and almost 6 when we were released from hospital.

Be kind to yourself, it sounds like you're having a really tough time.

Scans use approximate weights by the measurements they take and they can be vastly different. I had one at 38 weeks with my dd1 and was told that baby would be 8-8.5lbs and that was big enough for me so I was induced on my due date. DD1 came out at 10lb 7oz.

I know its easy saying it, but try not to worry too much, I'm sure baby will be fine

WombOfOnesOwn · 19/01/2016 16:49

Growth scans can definitely be off. They often are.

I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but one thing you might want to remember is that even though your mother will never get to meet your little one, when women are born, we have all our eggs already in our ovaries.

This means the very first place that the egg that would become your baby lived ... was inside your mother. There's a bond there that is utterly unbreakable, even by death. A friend of mine who lost her mother while pregnant found this to be a very comforting thought, and maybe you would too, so I thought I would pass it on.

Dsis was having weekly scans because she was told her baby would be about 5lb if he got to term. She had him (in the ambulance) less than a week later and he weighed 9lb 4oz. She had had weeks of worry because of the scans and monitoring which all turned out to be unnecessary.

BertrandRussell · 19/01/2016 17:05

I'm a bit puzzled about them suggesting such an early induction for foetal weight alone- is there any other reason for concern?

Mabel80 · 19/01/2016 17:42

wombOfOnesOwn that is a lovely way to think about it - Thank you.

SO many people say scans can be really out and given there are no other concerns it worries me that they are talking about induction. I had a horrific delivery with an induction drip with DS as he had pooped in me and it ended up instrumental delivery and I really don't want that this time, or a baby who need not have come out sooner than necessary.
