to think surely I must have burnt more calories than this?

I got a fitbit HR Charge for Christmas.

I do Metafit on a saturday morning. Today was my third week in a row wearing my fitbit. Ive not burned over 200 calories in any week. Today I only burned 151 calories. I dont believe that.

For anyone who is not sure, metafit is a high intense exercise class that lasts for 30 mins inc warm up/cool down. Today we did 25 secs squat jumps, 10 secs rest, 25 secs up and downs (lying on the floor and jumping up again) 10 secs rest, 25 secs lunge jumps. Repeated 3 times before the high knees finisher. That was round one. There were 3 rounds in total with different exercises in each one and finally finished by doing the 3 finishers for 30 secs each back to back. It certainly gets you out of breath and hot & sweaty.

Surely I would have burned more than 150 calories. Instead I could have gone to Parkrun and exercised at half the intensity for an extra 5 minutes and burned twice as many calories.

Is this right?

I tend to totally ignore the calorie burn estimates if I'm trying to lose weight. What works for me is to stick to the sedentary calorie intake to lose weight and don't count my exercise, it's just a bonus. That seems to give me a steady 2lb a week weight loss. Before I was doing loads of exercise and not losing any weight so clearly the calories I needed were overestimated.

2lbs a weekEnvy.

I'm lucky if I lose 1lb a month.

But then I'm old..and I suppose it's inevitable.

Higge · 20/01/2016 13:52

I don't weigh myself but agree 2lbs a week weight loss was the ghost of weight loss past....Envy
I have been apparently burning 2600-3000kcal per day on Fitbit for 3 weeks now - you'd think I'd have started to notice some slackening of my very tight jeans. Hmm
My resting heart rate has fallen from 68 to 50 though - that's very low....must be an athlete or something!Wink

Well according to my fitbit Ive burned 7227 calories today. I didn't wear it last night as it was charging so I dont know if that's anything to do with it. I dont for one second believe it obviously.

Normally its about the 2000 on a rest day and I dont seem to burn any more after a metafit workout than any other day so Im not sure about that.

When my heart is in it a bit more I will look to aim to eat about 1700 calories a day. Dont think I could do much less. Though as I said up thread Im not particularly trying to lose weight ATM. I just can't be bothered to worry about my food.

I fancy Parkrun this week so not doing Metafit, but I will go back to it again.

My resting heart rate is 52, but I have seen it low as 48. I usually make it to be about 55 or so when I take my own pulse.

if your resting hr is lower than average calorie count is usually underestimated

some weird stuff going on with your fitbit:o

Blush I know I'm lucky! I've been warned about weight loss being harder as you get older, so I'm hoping to get to a weight I'm happy with while I'm in my 30s and try and keep it under control.

I've a healthy bmi, but want to lose another stone before I'm happy with my weight.

absolutely Sorry, I was busy and just noticed your question about my post:
it is difficult to burn off junk food like pizza and doughnuts simply because they are so calorie-dense and so easy to gorge on - I just read the pepperoni Domino's is 300 cals for 1/8. I bet many people are eating a half (1200 cals) or even a whole one (2400 cals)

Oh and yes, fitness gadgets are often on glue !
And I love burpees and pressups (did 500 of the latter as a pb recently)

Exercise is great for health, but unless you really exercise to a high standard it tends to only be a minor boost to weight loss from diet.
Another problem is that people "reward" themselves for exercising, sometimes unconsciously, but often with more calories than they burned

BigChocFrenzy · 21/01/2016 19:41

That's a good plan, Trixi The menopause can cause you to pile on a lot more weight

Over 7,000 calories in a day definitely doesn't sound right unless you did a hell of a lot of fast walking and a couple of gym sessions. The most I've burned in a day has been just under 3,000 when I've done a gym session first thing, been up and down stairs all day (town house) and back and forth into town 3 times (15 mins walk each way and hilly).

Fitbit customer service are apparently pretty good at swapping out duff products - get in touch with them and explain about today's readings.

FWIW I've found the HR monitor pretty accurate. I was at the docs a couple of months ago and he did my HR, he redid it and clearly seemed to think he hadn't got it right. I commented that my HR was generally low and average resting was between about 54 and 59 - he was getting about 55, lo and behold my Fitbit was showing 54.

bigchoc I think most people overestimate calories burned through exercise.

Does anyone remember the Michael Mosely experiment where he ran around a track (about 400 yards) and promptly consumed a muffin?

He thought he'd reward himself! The run must've burned less than 50 cals; the muffin must've contained at least 400Grin..

Every BMR calculation tool puts me at between 1300-1500 per day depending on activity levels. Even the "very active" category only stipulates about 1800-2000. So where the heck has the "average" calorie burn for women of 2000cals per day come from?

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 23/01/2016 12:39

Rock It was a blip in the readings. Its not a faulty product as such. I put it down to coming in from work about 6 and plugging it in to charge as it had run out of battery during the day (so much I couldnt see the time on it). I didn't put it on again till the next morning when I was leaving for work. Its the longest Ive not worn it since getting it.

I think most people overestimate calories burned through exercise. That's exactly what I did before the fitbit. Certainly is an eye opener to see that Metafit hardly burns any calories for the amount of exercise taken. Ive burned 1140 so far today and not been to any classes. Then again its been years since I solely took up exercise in order to lose weight. I now know (have discovered this a few years ago so way before I started this thread) that its all in the food. I just like cake too much and have no willpower to control my eating habits.
