To ask for your help re leaving?

Baronessvontwurzel · 16/01/2016 10:05

Thanks in no small part to mn I have got to the point where I am leaving. I've had enough and I've found a place to move to.
I'm panicking about the move.

Could I ask for your help?
I'm worried about furnishing it and making it nice so the dc are happy. I am totally flummoxed by tv/ sky packages and tvs and sky boxes, smart tvs and Netflix. Could anyone tell me what I can buy/ do to have it all set up on move in day?

Next, flat pack furniture and the kids beds - I have agreed to leave the majority of furniture here as h and I are hoping to be able to share care. I'll need to order beds and set them up, but also have a 1 year old and have moved away from friends and family so not got many people to ask fit a hand. I have some money, can anyone recommend bed buying and flat pack furniture construction tips? Or just pay the Ikea service, any good?

I'm also worried about money and moving, I'll have about 1,400 pounds left over after the rental deposit to buy what I need new and move in.

I'm planning to do a big clear out of my own books and clothes, and not take all the kids stuff as I'll need to leave at least half their stuff here. H and I want to be amicable and not shock the DC so I was thinking I'd take 4 days to move everything over in the car and setting everything up before they see it.

The big items I would be taking would be which will need a removal van-

My bed
Tumble dryer
Dishwasher

Apart from that I will be buying new / second hand the following:

Kitchen table
Chairs
Fridge
Washing machine

Sofa
TV
Desk
Shelving

Ds bed
Dd cot

I'm way out of budget aren't I. Haven't wanted to argue with h about possessions or to ask for help wirh the move. This doesn't look possible does it.

Any thoughts very welcome.

Sorry x posts there. Amazing Ikea list!
And yes ds could watch it here. I just feel I want to make sure I can set everything up he likes, just like h can. Sorry it brings me to tears for some reason.

Don't get a Miele w/d I had one once it was shite. Thought it would be great given the brand. Can I ask is a dishwasher a necessity for you? It is for me now I have 4 dc & room but back when we only had 2-3 dc & no room I needed a tumble dryer more. We got our f/f heavily discounted by Currys because it was the display model with a slight dent on the top door.

memyselfandaye · 16/01/2016 11:30

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned auctions.

Look up your local sale room, they are great. I got a solid wood dresser with big deep drawers for the bedroom for £9, then stripped it, painted it and changed the handles.

I promise it isn't all junk.

BloodyPlantagenets · 16/01/2016 11:51

I furnished my whole flat for £500 from IKEA when I left my ex. Sofa, beds, tv unit, kitchen ware and loads more.

Hi Baronessvontwurzel - we're sorry to hear you're going through such a difficult time.

Huge apologies for jumping on your thread, but as always with threads of this kind, we do like advise all our members to be aware that not everyone on t'internet is who they say they are, and that, although we're awed daily by the astonishing support our members give each other through life's trickier twists and turns, we'd always caution anyone never to give more of themselves to another poster, emotionally or financially, than they can afford to spare.

We are wishing you the best of luck Baroness Flowers

Baroness, this is the tough bit. Honestly. So many of us have had to do it. In my case I moved with a 3 day old DD3! She's almost 8 now.

My point: it's stuff. Just stuff. Yes, your DS might be a bit wibbly that the football takes a week or so to organise, but what he'll get back is his mum. His capable, confident mum. And in years to come he'll look back and see it was the right thing for his family; and that things are happier and easier, and won't remember that he had to wait for the sky man to come to plug the box in.

Best tips already mentioned... try your local auction. Ours is full of house clearance stuff (not priceless antiques!), so bargains galore for big items (most deliver for a small fee too). IKEA is brilliant if you have one close (I made wardrobes with then aged 1 DD3 'helping'). Do you have a local charity furniture place (we have a heart foundation one- it's huge). And AO are ace, pick the cheapest stuff you trust (there's nothing wrong with BEKO or Hotpoint), they deliver in under 24 hours (and do cheap TV's too).

Good luck, chin up.

ghostyslovesheep · 16/01/2016 12:45

I'd get a smart TV and go with Netflix - it has films, kids stuff etc but costs less than £7 a month - I got a small Smart TV from Argos for £160

Look at your local 'free to collect' pages as well (on FB) people give away lots of stuff - when I moved I gifted a cabin bed, bunk beds, a sofa and lots of other bits

Ikea are great for cheap basics - delivery is costly but if you buy lots of stuff it balances out

I wouldn't sign up to sky etc until you are settled and have your finances sorted

good luck xxxx

ghostyslovesheep · 16/01/2016 12:46

oh and I highly recommend AO for white goods

RandomMess · 16/01/2016 13:54

Washer Dryers aren't great at all. You could locate the tumble dryer elsewhere???

Are they something you can rent - I'm just thinking then if you hate it or it doesn't work you're not stuck with it.

Katarzyna79 · 16/01/2016 14:17

youre Very brave op i wish i had the strength to do it.

Anyway i personally woukdnt buy all ikea stuff just forvthe sake of buying new. Some ikea furniture is good quality others poor.

Like the cheap sofa id look in gumtree for a leather sofa least it can be wiped down amd theyre robust as long as there are no tears it will last many years. Depends where you are in the country and if u can get help dragging it in
Some sellers are willing to drop off too and help putting it in the house. I receny got a nice wooden cot with bottom.drawer for 30 pounds, i have a mattress husband forgot to give thst away with our old cot lol. I was thinking of a new ikea one but for 60 quid and its just basic minus the mattress i thght id only regret it. Im saving the money for nicw baby clothes.

even the table we have a gorgeous mango wood table use it in kitchen with8 chairsnits used but it looks new we akways get compliments on it curtesy of gumtree i k ow in ikea that would cost stupid money.

Regarding the refrigerator &washer are there local shops not big brand stores near you?. Especially asian areas where they have these electrical shops and naff furniture shops? you can get a bargain, im sure non asian ones too im just telling u of my experience. We got ours from such a place after marriage because we were skint. It was new but a discontinued beko model just 200 quid full size and with full guarantee.it did us good for 2 years then we moved and husband gave it to a friend since our new place had fitted white goods. Also search for ex display models in cpurrys you can get real bargains asol long as you have the guarantee its good right?

Allgunsblazing · 16/01/2016 14:20

OP, my H has no idea about any of this: freeview, internet packages etc. I googled TVs and went and bought whatever I could afford/needed. All my furniture is assembled by me. I set up the fish tank on my own. I wash and basic service the car myself, I bought the bikes and had the bike rack installed. I bought the bread machine, I did the surround system, I decorated the whole house.
The only thing I seemigly can't do is grow plants, I kill everything, but the rest...everything is done by me. I grew up with brothers and told 'I'm a girl, girls don't do diy'. So I was clueless. H was even more clueless. So I youtubed and googled.
You can do it too!

Katarzyna79 · 16/01/2016 14:21

why not get a used pine bed frame they look warm and very commonly sold on gumtree for £15-20 then just pay for a basic new mattress?id buy mattress online or argos have it sent to new home?

Grumpyoldblonde · 16/01/2016 14:58

Hi OP - take a look at a company called Wayfair, they are excellent and deliver free over £50.00 - they have value lines of furniture and deliver next day, you also accumulate 'credit' on each purchase, a small % which adds up and means you might get some small value items (teatowels/light bulbs) for nothing.

VivienScott · 16/01/2016 15:02

eBay is a good bet, otherwise a lot of charity shop chains like the British Heart foundation have furniture shops you can go to. They inspect their stuff first so it's normally quite good quality.

Paleninteresting · 16/01/2016 15:33

Hi OP, well done for planning the move. Check your area for donated furniture organisations. In our area there is a place to donate unwanted furniture, toys, TVs etc. Community services refer their clients there and it is open to the public.

I have had some beautiful and not so beautiful things from there, all have been cleaned up and up cycled. Your local WA or refuge would probably give you a number if this exists near you.

It is worth doing things slowly and holding onto your cash as long as you can for unforeseen events such as a shower needing replaced or car breaking down. For me, and everyone is different I focussed upon everyone having warm shoes, coats, essentials, good food and a stress free house, the rest I did when I had the cash.

The Lakland heated dryer at £80 is cheaper than a dryer and I do our large family drying with it. A good washer with varying lengths of cycles is good for a family. I would not class a dishwasher as essential and something which could come after six months when you know you haven't had any surprises with finances.

Well done again, you sound like a planner which will always be an excellent skill and very positive example to your children.
