Aibu to really REALLY hate the snow?

Argh its just started here (Midlands) although I don't think it will stick. This is more about heavier snowfalls. It causes so much disruption in this country with regards to traffic conditions and school closures. Dh and I both work ft so a school closure means we either have to rely on my elderly parents or one of us has to take a day off and risk losing our jobs (both agency employees).
Then there is the danger of ungritted roads and tyres that don't cope with the snow very well, last year a journey that normally takes 10 mins took me over 2 hours, traffic just at a complete standstill, and its unsafe for pedestrians, particularly those who are unsteady on their feet to begin with.

I agree a fresh snowfall looks magical, until the cars have been through it a few times and then its just brown slush. It's cold and wet and never bloody happens on a Sunday when dh can be persuaded to take the kids sledging while I cook a roast (piss about on t'interweb)

So aibu? Or just a miserable twat. :)

I hate it. The only good thing about it, was a "legitimate" (when very heavy and public transport/cabs had ground to a stand still) reason to stay off work. Now I am not working, it's an excuse to batten down the hatches and stay home for days at a time. I can't walk on it and I dread it

Justanotherlurker · 14/01/2016 22:28

We haven't got it here yet but last year it came down heavy at morning peak time and it rendered where I live to a standstill, I have to walk down a ~1 in 3 slope to get to the train station, by the time I had walked to the station everywhere was gridlocked and it was obvious through various text messages that it was easier to just go back home, I absolutely hated trying to get back up that hill. I'm ashamed and juvinile to admit that, remembering young professionals desperate to get into work slip on the arse and slide down the hill as a load of us was struggling to get up the hill as utterly hilarious that it can still bring a tear to my eye.

I love snow, I work at a nearby school which I can walk to, if the buses stop the school is closed to children, but I still have to go in, a secondary school with no children is a lovely place to work,!

Pheobe1 · 14/01/2016 22:38

I love snow and get ridiculously excited about it. Sadly living in the south west we rarely get any and I'm incredibly Envy of those who do.

Sometimesithinkimbonkers · 14/01/2016 22:43

You can't push your kids wheelchair in the snow! I hate snow?

mudandmayhem01 · 14/01/2016 22:56

I sound like a right selfish fucker, sometimes. Snow must be shit for wheelchair users and the elderly. A sort of wheelchair skidoo could be handy but probably not a worthwhile investment for two days of slush. Hope you and your dc are able to get out and about.

poorpaws · 14/01/2016 23:05

Move to Devon! I used to live in the Midlands I don't miss snow at all.

ilovesooty · 14/01/2016 23:09

Stealth my meeting was in Northallerton.

Shockers · 14/01/2016 23:46

For us, snow means playing out on the nearby fells.

We are in the region that has had constant rain, (and flooding- although our house has not been affected) for the last 2 months.

It would be a welcome relief for us. I realise it isn't for everyone though.

ouryve · 14/01/2016 23:48

Northallerton wasn't even that bad, sooty. They just had a dusting! I spoke to someone down there, today, who was surprised how bad it was up here, just 40 miles away!

SoleBizzz · 14/01/2016 23:50

YANBU

Loathe it because of dirty slush, slippy ice, long or impossible car journeys etc

Yabu as it looks beautiful and our road is quiet for a change.

SuckingEggs · 14/01/2016 23:58

It's pretty to see. But horrible post-powder. Can't stand being on ice or slush. Yanbu.

Spickle · 15/01/2016 00:04

Come live in the south east - no snow here Hmm

travellinglighter · 15/01/2016 00:18

I work for an electricity company. When the snow falls the power goes out and I go out into the snow to put people back on. I look like a hero and I get paid loads of overtime.

I LOVE THE SNOW.

Qwebec · 15/01/2016 00:22

YABU Before the snow falls it's cold humid and dark, no matter how many layers I put on the humidity goes through. As soon as the snow falls, the humidity drops, it feels less cold and the night is way less dark.
However I have to admit people need to be prepared, none slip boots, winter tires, sand/salt and here the snow blowers are very organised.

Also not much would survive the winter in my garden if the snow would not protect from the cold.
But I hate glaze, it is so slippery.

kipperssippers · 15/01/2016 01:10

yabu to me because i love snow Smile

ilovesooty · 15/01/2016 05:15

ouryve I think it might have been cancelled as most of the attendees live in areas further north of Northallerton and they might have struggled to get home if conditions worsened.
One of the managers had arranged to give up her annual leave to attend. She lives in Sunderland and no one emailed or phoned her to tell her it had been cancelled and she only found out (from the message I left her) when she arrived at Northallerton. Understandably she's rather less than happy.

Outfoxed · 15/01/2016 07:18

I've always loved the snow....if it snows now when I have to walk a mile to work, I might change my mind! The snow is only great if you have no where to go and nothing to do

Walkingintheraindrops · 15/01/2016 07:21

I think local councils have been great the last 10 years or so since that year there was a shortage of grit. I am in SE though so don't get as much as say Scotland. Now you see gritters out at night regularly.

I love snow. I find the complaints about "this country" shutting down over a bit of snow highly irritating. A countries have times when snow is problematic, even those where it is common. You get school closures and road closures and people snowed in everywhere.
