aibu RE wearing shorts in a swimming pool

Twice I have been asked in our local leisure centre to remove my shorts when I've been spotted wearing them in the pool. The first time they 'let me off' because I was pregnant. The second time I had to take them off.

We're going swimming this weekend so aibu to wear them and refuse to take them off? Surely it's not that much of a hazard? Plenty of men wear shorts swimming. I asked the reasoning behind this policy and apparently it's incase they have to rescue you from the pool for whatever reason. I have sensitive skin and can't shave before going in chlorine or I get an awful rash and have been cursed with thick black pubic hair that grows onto the top of my thighs so really self conscious without shorts.

fastdaytears that's not her stomach either, photoshopped to fuckery!

Potatoface2 · 13/01/2016 22:52

lorelel9....a tee shirt isnt worn for religious reasons.....the burqa swimsuit womans husband was wearing shorts!

lorelei9 · 13/01/2016 23:08

Yes Potato
But that's where the problem is

If a garment of some kind is allowed on one person, then it should be allowed on another

Religion can't exempt someone from a safety rule. it's like wearing jewellery doing martial arts, either anyone can or no one can.

whatdoIget · 13/01/2016 23:27

Presumably a burka swimsuit is made of swimsuit fabric, so won't get waterlogged and really heavy when wet? A cotton tshirt would be a lot heavier when wet and so be heavier for the lifeguard if they had to rescue the person?
I imagine that's the reason but I wouldn't think it'd make that much difference?? I'm not a lifeguard though so what would I know

whatdoIget · 13/01/2016 23:32

I'm probably thinking about this too much, but a cotton tshirt would create quite a lot of drag when the person wearing it was being towed back to the side by a lifeguard. A close fitting burka suit in swimsuit fabric would not.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 13/01/2016 23:34

Yanbu. I would complain and ask them why men are allowed to wear swimming shorts but women are not. Tell them you found it humiliating and degrading being asked to remove your swimming shorts and that because they allow men to wear them, they are discriminating against you by failing to allow you to access the service (ie pool) on the same terms as the men (ie wearing swimming shorts) which is less favourable treatment and unlawful as per The Equality Act 2010.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 13/01/2016 23:36

The legal bit: www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/part/3/crossheading/provision-of-services-etc

Although it's only civil law so the worst you could do is sue them which is not the easiest thing to do.

lorelei9 · 13/01/2016 23:46

What, the burka swimsuit looks like it has a t shirt attached or integrated. I am not sure what fabric it is but wouldn't the amount and shape cause similar drag to that caused by a t shirt? The way they float out and so on?

GiddyOnZackHunt · 13/01/2016 23:54

Absolute nonsense. Ask them about their survival badges. I had to wear pyjamas and swim in the pool.
There are lots of women in our local pool wearing a bikini top and board shorts. I can't remember being warned off rescuing women wearing swim shorts when I did lifeguard training 30 years ago.
If you're wearing proper swim shorts then they are being ridiculous. Perhaps you can only wear swim shorts with a bare chest? You could try that out Grin

whatdoIget · 13/01/2016 23:58

Lorelei 9, it's quite possible I'm just talking a load of shit! I've just googled and I think I'd imagined them as just being close fitting but covering arms, legs and head. Whereas most of them I found actually they have got a loose tshirty bit.

SaggingTits · 14/01/2016 00:04

Glad nobody think I'm being a twat. Going to try and get something else beforehand but if not I'm going to wear the same shorts as DP as suggested Grin

Giddy- I did think about that. I'm prepared to show more chest if it means covering my legs/bits. They may revise the shorts rule when everyone has vacated the pool due to my awful boobs flopping around Wink

What, oh, you've not seen them in real life? I have only ever seen them with a t shirt bit so that's what I'm thinking.

If a pool has a rule about speedos or swimsuit only, that's one thing but I feel the OP is being discriminated against. Also I wonder why they thought pregnancy made t shirt wearing okay but then refused the second time? I would guess it's a policy with no real thought put into it.

Skullyton · 14/01/2016 00:10

i dont know what szie oyu are, but for future reference, if anyone is interested, Bon Marche sell some nice swim dresses in size 14 and up. I have 3 of them as i am a fatty who swims regularly.

i'd much prefer to wear shorts and t-shirt though if i'm honest!

whatdoIget · 14/01/2016 00:11

No never seen one in real life! Ignore me Grin

WhirlyTwos · 14/01/2016 00:14

If they're swimming shorts they haven't a leg to stand on

GiddyOnZackHunt · 14/01/2016 00:25

I don't think women should have to buy special flouncy cossies because they feel big or are a bit hairy by some standards. Should men with 'moobs' have to wear a bikini?

MidniteScribbler · 14/01/2016 00:31

Our school pool doesn't allow anything with metal clips that could come off and get stuck in the filters. So an elastic waist pair of shorts is fine, but one with a button wouldn't be.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 14/01/2016 01:44

I really can't imagine what the problem could be, but since lots of other posters have offered you good advice on how to get round it, I've nothing to add.

I'm just amazed they're allowed to be so discriminatory - if they're men's swimshorts, then they should be allowed in the pool, regardless of who is wearing them!

GrinAndTonic · 14/01/2016 01:52

Perhaps it's because they are useless lifeguards?
Here (in Australia) people swim in togs, bikinis, shorts, tee shirts, board shorts, budgie smugglers (speedoes) and burkinis. Everyone is able to be rescued as they are.
