To the couple that just won £33 million saying they'd pay for their daughter to fly first class back from Australia. Get a private jet ffs. Buy a yacht & the staff you'd need. Bring back that 'spend spend spend' woman!

My mum won and they advice you to go public as then you are in control of it and have not got the press on your doorstep.

Would you have the press on your doorstep if you have children though? Privacy and all that. The first thing I would be doing is lawyering up.

Is £33m really private jet territory? Sure, you could buy one, but you have to pay loads to run it as well. It wouldn't be top of my list at this level of win!

I looked into my lottery win holiday once when I was ill enough to have to stay in bed but well enough to be bored!

Turned out that first class flight for all of us (4 adults and 6 kids) worked out at only marginally less than chartering a private jet....roughly £60k for the flight to NY. So it is definitely within hiring a jet territory.

If I won I would contemplate my future and build a sound financial plan for our future and the family. I would do something for charity and make a few anonymous gifts of houses and cars to those I knew who need/would never spend on themselves.

All whilst sat on a whacking super yacht in Monaco whilst drinking very chilled Krug with a straw in the bottle. (Or anywhere where it is currently summer. But not too hot. The crew could move us somewhere temperate and sunny if it wasn't warm enough)

Most jet owners will hire them out to a) pay for the upkeep and b) keep it flight worthy.

I would not want to go public, but I've seen those anonymous winner stories in the papers and they always seem to have a "Do you know who won? Call us on this number..." section under the stories.

So you'd be outed anyway, sooner or later.

I had the same plan as someone above, hide the winnings and then claim I'd won a smaller amount in a later draw. But only to very, very close family. Moving away/abroad would also be an option to keeping it secret. I might not even tell DH we'd won, but I would take him with me when I emigrated

I wouldn't make any significant changes immediately, so people wouldn't notice.

But if I wasn't worried about people noticing, my impractical spending would be buying land to build a house on, nothing too massive, but the land would need woods and a big hill, because I'm going to carve a giant outline of my dog on the hill, like those chalk men and horses.

Then I'm going to go on the Orient Express, take my Dad on a Polar safari, see the northern lights, take in rescue donkeys, pay Kevin Bacon to do the Footloose dance with me and four of my friends, have my own crown made, and visit Scandinavia.

I wouldn't go public, even if I knew it would be leaked. But there's a difference between posing for pictures and leaks to the press.

I'd definitely want to share the money with close family and so I'd tell them. We live in London though and there's not so much of a small village gossip feel here. We don't even know our neighbours' names, they wouldn't question it if we quietly moved one day. If we won just a few million, I think we'd be able to get away with claiming it was an inheritance. It would only pay for a slightly bigger/better area home upgrade where we are!

I don't know how you'd manage to keep that amount of money quiet without making yourself miserable and paranoid, so yes I would go public. It would disappear from the news pretty quickly. I couldn't tell you the name of a single UK lottery winner.

I wouldn’t go public. I’d clear a few mortgages for friends and family and then I would travel the world as a middle aged backpacker. Of course, the flights would be first class and occasionally I’d book into the presidential suite of the local 5 star hotel. When I got bored of that I would come home and build solar parks, invest in wind and battery storage technology so I could suck more carbon out of the atmosphere than I put in to the atmosphere due to my big car, flights to ski resorts/beaches/sporting events etc would be beyond carbon neutral.

Ii sometimes think that people over estimate what sort of money a lottery win will offer you. 33m isn't intercontinental private jet or super yacht money. It doesn't take a genius to work out that once they're bought a house for the thick end of 700k that 1.2m won't let the pair of you live the life of Reilly for the next 40 odd years.

I'm puzzled how it could be super yacht money. Steve Jobs's super yacht (far from the biggest or most expensive) cost in excess of $100m and Abromovich's much more. That's before ongoing fuel, mooring and crewing costs. I can't see how you could do that off the back of a £30m win.

I certainly wouldn't go pubic but i would go in to hiding. People would be like "wheres Cersei? Her house is abandoned and up for sale"

Seriously though, I wouldn't tell my mum, she'd have it spent in about 2 days in fags and eBay purchases and new cars for herself. I'd buy a flat in each of the cities I loved, a few holiday homes by the sea in secluded places, take a year long holiday seeing everything I ever wanted to see, and buy the kids a proper education. I might even live in the same town (London) I do now but just upgrade to keep up the lie that I wasn't filthy "Scrooge McDuck" style RICH!!!

I would find a way to sneakily pay my families mortgages in secret so I never had to blab it was me. They'd have the money off me in a shot if they knew!

£110m to live like the Beckhams.

£10m at 3% generates about £300k a year before tax (about what a good few London lawyers, bankers and private doctors earn on here and some mumsnet posters). So about 3x that is about £1m a year before the state steals half in tax which again is what the top solicitors, barristers, doctors and many a business owner earn in London. It is however a lot of money to get a once and you may be able to grow it better than 3% a year or live off the capital by spending the capital.

I'd love to know where you can get 3% interest on more than about 50k. Not that I have £13m!!

Hedge funds and other funds. However you would normally divide your fortune into bits - some bit ou would take no risk on at all, another bit you'd have at some risk, another bit in property. it is what your pension funds all day. Some funds were up 15% last year, some down 15%. Risky business but no one with millions to invest will just have their savings on deposit which is why I thought 3% a conservative estimate.

Fuck going public, no way. I'd only tell close family and friends.

Me and DH often discuss what we'd do and anew pair of brogues would not be the first time on my mind.

I'd :

Head to the Caribbean with family
for month to process everything.

Then I'd start organising all the important stuff, financial advice, how to make the most in interest etc.

I'd buy a property in the UK and probably Canada. Then I'd travel the world, rent luxurious apartments for a year in New York, Paris, Hong Kong, Sydney etc and visit all the places I wanted.

Would spend my days in museums, fancy restaurants, shopping and sightseeing. Hiking, skiing, etc.

I'd try and have more kids too. Once DS reached school age, we'd have to settle, either UK or the US.

Sigh.

A pair of brogues and matching (functional) handbag would probably be up there on my first shopping trip. Oooh, what I'd do with £33m. Has the second winner come forward yet?
