I have just seen this in the Guardian;

www.theguardian.com/society/2016/jan/12/tories-reject-move-to-ensure-rented-homes-fit-for-human-habitation

I am sure IANBU in thinking this is disgraceful and Dickensian when it comes to housing? We are in 2016 yet Feudalism is returning.

Well, at least they are living up to their "nasty party" moniker.

One idly wonders if animal welfare legislation provides better protection ...

Fun as it is to whine against those nasty private landlords, be careful what you believe.

On October 1st the Deregulation Bill became law. It adds lots of extra legislation, including outlawing 'retaliatory evictions'. This means that if a tenant raises major concerns about a property to the local council, the landlord cannot evict while these problems remain unfixed. Of course this just gives a tenant the right to stay in a dump because landlords who let places that bad won't do anything.

this is the private sector. HAs do seem to be able to get away with anything and THAT is what needs fixing.

still, I'm not worried. My rental is entirely fit and was immaculate when it was rented out, and I do all the maintenance I can. It is being trashed but not by me.

the answer, as always, is not to rent filthy dumps. 'but there's no choice', you say. Well, that's because there's too many people all wanting to live in the same place.

Right to Buy is also the root of the problem. Too many people, not enough housing, no space to build it, plenty of it to fix but no incentive to do so.

Full list of MPs who voted against.

Yet again a thread that suggests all private landlords are soulless bastards who don't care and are just after money. Hmm

Osolea · 14/01/2016 22:14

You are complaining about the Tories brining in right to buy decades ago, while also complaining that they have rejected a bill that would extend the right to buy now.

If this bill had been passed, there would be less affordable housing, and fewer social housing properties available. Don't to see that? You got what you wanted.

HelenaDove · 14/01/2016 22:36

The video in my link shows a place run by an HA not a private landlord Both specialsubject and i have pointed out on several threads now that its the HAs who need more scrutiny and legislation. A private landlord can be fined thousands for leaving someone without heating or hot water for months on end or for sending dangerous cowboy workmen into homes. Its HAs who are getting away with it.

specialsubject · 15/01/2016 11:00

nice try, Helena, but the spewers of anti-landlord bile on MN never listen to reason.

you're quite right; stopping the extension of right-to-buy is the right thing to do.

HelenaDove · 17/01/2016 18:37

Special there are a few out there who are challenging the rhetoric. Joe Halewood is one. He has commented underneath this article.

I also note that the journo in that isn't keeping up with legislation. Revenge evictions have been outlawed.

cuts do indeed mean that enforcement will get worse. There's a no-cost solution; don't rent a dump from a crook.

HelenaDove · 17/01/2016 20:21

Good point Revenge evictions were outlawed back in October.

But i believe that if the eviction takes place six months or more after the disagreement its just classed as a normal eviction.

Re. enforcement you are right. From what ive seen all Enviromental Health seem capable or able to afford to do at the moment is to write letters to non complying landlords. Enforcement with any actual teeth seems to very seldomly occur.
