I'm a mature student and at this very moment studying in a university computer room with 14 computers. All morning the room was empty except for me (most students are doing exams). At about 2 pm another student walks in and sits down 2 computers away from me (I have my stuff spread over 2 computers so she couldn't sit next to me). If it had been me I would have sat as far away from the other student as possible. Now out of the corner of my eye i keep catching sight of her and am getting distracted by her typing (so distracted i have logged into MN). AIBU to be silently wishing she hadn't sat so close.

I still remember my favourite computer at uni, over 10 years ago! We had nice big desks, with partition boards up in between most of them. So my favourite was facing the door, but with boards round 3 sides.

On ew years eve we did a bit of an afternoon supermarket shop. .

Carpark was half empty. Loads of spaces.

A woman actually asked me to shut the car door so sge could pull in the space at the side of us. I was wrangling ds into his car seat at the time.

We were nearly as far away from the entrance as we could be. There was a car next to her so it's not like she was aiming for a space with no cars on one side so she could get dcs in/out easily (like I do).

If I hadn't been in a good mood I would have said no!

My pet hate is people who use the treadmill right next to me when there is a bank of 15 all empty. Why would you want to run next to someone else if you had a choice? Although, I agree, it's probably the people with their favourite computer, treadmill etc…..rant over

Andrewofgg · 11/01/2016 17:54

If you think the next computer but one is within your "personal space" you are only a mature student in the most technical sense of the term. Get over yourself.

Roussette · 11/01/2016 18:00

I totally agree with you OP. You were in an empty room. You were on your own. Of course you will spread your papers out a bit if there is no one else there. Then if suddenly people troop in and start sitting at the computers, you collect your possessions up a bit. But if one person comes in, why the heck do they choose to sit so close.

I once sat on an empty beach on my own. Someone pitched up literally 3 feet away from my towel. Why??

Yeah I had one too! three rows back on the left right next to the window, with the plug socket next to my feet. I'd happily work there for hours with the sun shining on my face, loved it!

when being crept up on a queue, i turn and stand sideways. It's interesting to see the dilemma this causes the creeper as s/he wants to move into the space but as i am sideways i am seeing out of the corner of my eye , so thus far they stay put.

Dollymixtureyumyum · 11/01/2016 22:57

Totally agree with you Op, there was loads of room so you spead out.
The poster who said they would have made you move just for the hell of it- really??? Hmm

YANBU.

If someone is standing too close to me in a queue I put my hand on my hip then peruse the goods on the shelves and sloooowly turn sideways.
If I touch them I startle and move a step away.

On the bus last week, I experienced some granny love from a young man who kept his leg right up against mine. I was torn between Eew and feeling sorry for him. Seriously, who fancies someone with a shopping trolley?

PennyHasNoSurname · 12/01/2016 08:16

Maybe if you didnt have your crap spread.over two desks she wpuld have felt further away as there would have been a clear empty gap between you?

rudolphistheboss · 12/01/2016 08:21

I was in the fish shop with dd(3) and ds(1) in a baby carrier. I'm 5ft tall. I was standing waiting to pay in an otherwise empty shop when a man came in who was about 6ft4 and about 20stone (so had the potential to be pretty intimidating). He proceeded to stand so close he actually stood on my foot! He then talked over my head while the lady behind the counter served me. She looked embarrassed but stopped serving me to serve him... At which point I said 'excuse me, can you see me?! Did you mean to be so rude?' (thanks mn Wink ) he didn't even look embarrassed or shift his foot off mine! Rude fucker.

OP, YANBU. Some people are weird.
