About toddler group snacks?

I wanted to mention/discuss with you my concerns about some toddler groups snack options.

I went to a group last week - at snack time, they gave the children: crisps, biscuits and juice (squash that's full of sugar). I changed the juice for water and gave my child the snack I'd brought with me (cheese sandwich and quartered grapes)

It does not teach the children healthy eating nor does it show a good example to parents. I believe that these groups should be offering fruit, raisins, rice cakes, milk or water.

Am I the only mum who thinks these unhealthy snakes are unacceptable? So my question is, do you think it's acceptable for these groups to offer our children unhealthy snacks?

If you're endurance training, then yes to a sports drinks but toddlers playing on the swings?! Nah! but you have made me smile with your pseudo science.

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 22:58

anyway, its no big deal, in moderation.

give your kids water if you prefer. You are choosing less risk of tooth decay over proper hydration, but no big deal, in most cases.

i would certainly chose to give my children squash, every time.

Blueberry234 · 10/01/2016 22:59

I really must under feed my children a cheese sandwich and grapes would be a good part of lunch not a snack. Anyway as my kids don't need snacks as they then don't eat a proper meal a biscuit once a week would not bother me I wouldn't do the communal drink anyway regardless of what it is as all the children seem to pick up each other's cups so I use his own bottle and watch it!

Soooosie · 10/01/2016 22:59

Fruit, breadsticks and veg worked well at my Playgroup. Nothing ever left! We were charged £2 per session and most of the parents liked to give their kids healthier food. The leader led the way with healthy snacks though. Bread, cakes, flapjack were all made by the parents/kids and cooked on site as part of a creative activity once a month.

LucyBabs · 10/01/2016 22:59

Do you mean doesn't replace lost salts in the body blue ?

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 23:00

toddlers are FAR more susceptible both to dehydration and to water overdose than an athlete doing training, thelouise.

Although, yes it is also true that water is dangerous to athletes in training too, as it doesn't hydrate, but can kill from an overdose.

most marathon deaths are from water overdoses. So are most ecstasy deaths.

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 23:02

Lucybabs, yes, it doesn't replace lost salts. Therefore it cannot be absorbed. because if it were to be absorbed, then the blood and body fluids would be diluted. you cannot dilute your body fluids because your cells explode.

firefly78 · 10/01/2016 23:03

oh dear god this is by far the biggest load of nonsense ive ever heard and you haven't managed to back any of it up.

Octonought · 10/01/2016 23:03

Blue14, where do you get your science? Fluid can not be peed out unless has first been absorbed by the colon, then transferred into the blood stream, and then into the renal tubules in the kidney then transferred to the bladder. If the fluid stays in the colon and is not absorbed, you'd have some serious diarrhoea!

thelouise · 10/01/2016 23:04

I'm shit at science but even I know that Blue14 is talking utter tripe. Grin

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 23:05

what is tripe about it thelouise?

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 23:06

yes octonaut exactly, it has to be got rid off fast.

Octonought · 10/01/2016 23:06

You are partially right about ecstasy deaths, but it's actually that ecstasy causes brain swelling which is made worse by excess fluid. I imagine most marathon deaths are due to sudden cardiac arrhythmia's but don't know for sure.

Octonought · 10/01/2016 23:07

No Blue, you are missing my point. You can't pee anything straight unless it has been absorbed.

RJnomore1 · 10/01/2016 23:07

Ecstasy deaths are most commonly due to heatstroke not dehydration which is a different thing but can actually be caused by a lot of factors. I'm not clued up on marathon deaths but as there's access to isotonic drinks every mile or so that seems incorrect too.

Water is not dangerous to athletes in training (and I know/train with plenty) in fact it's been proved to be as effective at rehydration for training as any isotonic drink. If you sweat profusely then you do need to ensure your electrolytes and salts are in balance but I'm talking way beyond normal training and toddlers don't even have the ability to sweat like that 😕

thelouise · 10/01/2016 23:08

That drinking water will "destroy their blood cells". Hmm

firefly78 · 10/01/2016 23:08

prove it to me and i will say im wrong.

RJnomore1 · 10/01/2016 23:09

Blue are you perhaps getting genuinely confused with the advice not to give bf babies water?

Kettlebettle · 10/01/2016 23:09

Actually, milk with a teaspoon of sugar is one of the best things to rehydrate, but as toddlers are unlikely to have been running marathons, water does fine.

kali110 · 10/01/2016 23:09

Water is still the best drink to hydrate, unless you have been running a marathon or doing lots of exercise Then giving just water in some cases could be harmful, but
A little child running around is not the same!

lucy completely agree with you regarding aspartame. It was just the latest thing to hate, but there are no significant studies to actually show harmful effects!

If you don't like the snacks offered op fair enough, keep bringing your own!
It's a day a week run by presumably volunteers? All the things you've suggested are not cheap!

As for raisins, they are just as bad for teeth if not more!

HairForNow · 10/01/2016 23:11

blue14 you have made my day with your Facebook meme shared post science! Drinking water destroys blood cells, love it!
Quick phone the daily mail and let them know every primary school child only allowed water in class will explode tomorrow morning, you can save the world god damn it. Do it, do it now.

firefly78 · 10/01/2016 23:13

that's interesting about aspartame. i didn't realise. just goes to show eh. what's bad for you today could be fine tomorrow. (except water, that's ok!!)

Kryptonite · 10/01/2016 23:14

Not read all the replies, so going on your OP. I'd have been unhappy at crisps AND biscuits as you state.
However, biscuits and juice once a week at toddler group I'd have relaxed a bit about. Only once a week won't hurt providing they get fed healthily at home. Smile

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 23:18

Hairfornow, try it, put a few blood cells on a microscope slide, add a drop of water and watch them explode.

I'm not on facebook.

I am a pathologist.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/01/2016 23:19

Blue - if water cannot properly hydrate, please explain how the human race survived the millennia before squash was invented!!
