To want to eat my food off a plate. Not a slate, wooden board, out of a bucket or anything else equally as pretentious?

We went out for Sunday lunch today. Food was very nice etc but when my desert arrived (Banoffee pie with ice cream, chantily cream and some berries) it was served on a bloody slate! A slate for christs sake! Now aside from the obvious hygiene issues, as you can imagine the ice cream was melting and starting to run all over the slate dribbling onto the table. All of which could have been avoided had it been served on a plate or in a dish!

It's not the first time either. Before Christmas I went to a fancy gastro pub type place, ordered a massive burger and chips. Yes you guessed it, it came on a wooden board, the chips were in a silver bucket and the there was a blob of coleslaw running off the board onto the table. Then as the burger was too big to shove into my mouth I had it cut it, and the wooden board was sliding all over the place!

Why do food place do this? I can only assume it's because it looks good, but I find it pretentious and wanky. I don't care what it looks like as long as what it tastes like.

AIBU to think that's it's not practical? Slates and wooden boards were not designed to eat off, but plates were!

YANBU. Ive had the burger/chips on a board/in a bucket, which is annoying. Ice cream on a slate is just daft.

Angeladelight · 10/01/2016 17:05

I went somewhere recently and had a burger on a board slate thing. It kept sliding about while I was trying to cut my burger and made a nice meal frustrating. I think it can look nice but is impractical...

I share your outrage.

It must be a nightmare for the kitchen staff too.

There was a thread about this a few months ago - with a photo of bread served in a cloth cap and something else served in a slipper, fashioned from a ciabatta/baguette/French stick!!!

Mad!

LetThereBeCupcakes · 10/01/2016 17:06

A few weeks back I was served burger and chips on a wooden board that was warped. It was like trying to eat off a lazy Susan. Ffs.Angry

TheAnswerIsYes · 10/01/2016 17:09

Send it back and ask for a plate next time. I had to do this when I was served a steak on a slate with a little gravy boat of Bear naive sauce. How on earth was I supposed to pour the sauce on without it going everywhere??

You might want to check out the 'We Want Plates' Facebook page for some total abominations.

WickedWax · 10/01/2016 17:10

YANBU. It's wanly and pretentious. I make a point when ordering of asking for my food on a plate.

WickedWax · 10/01/2016 17:10

*wanky

Throwingshade · 10/01/2016 17:11

I've had chips served in a miniature shopping trolley. That was quite cute but utterly ridiculous too.

I agree about boards especially when they are too small.

Throwingshade · 10/01/2016 17:12

Theanswerisyes Bear naive sauce!!!!

SparklyPenguin · 10/01/2016 17:14

Yanbu. Impractical and daft. I got served an orange juice in a jam jar recently....bloody stupid.

SelfRaisingFlour · 10/01/2016 17:14

There's a website called something like "we want plates". It's hilarious.

BrandNewAndImproved · 10/01/2016 17:14

Harvester have palm leaves over a tray when they serve chips and ribs, how wanky is that and no it might not be a Michelin restaurant but what's wrong with having a clean plate that's been through a dishwasher instead of a palm leaf from somewhere. Do the leaves go through the dishwasher?

DickDewy · 10/01/2016 17:15

I agree (and this has been done a lot on MN already).

Jamie's Italian is the worst offender. A meal for our family of 4 renders the table utterly chaotic with boards, slates, pails and twatty kilner jars.

Cheeseoncrumpets · 10/01/2016 17:15

It wasn't just the mess either, as I was trying to scoop everything up my spoon was grating against the slate. It was really horrible.

I think it could be a way to reduce portion sizes but is also the whole gastro pub thing where they want to be different (by being the bloody same!).

I think next time just call the server over and ask if they could bring you a plate or a bowl. One would assume they might have one of those lurking somewhere in the kitchen.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 10/01/2016 17:17

Absolutely YANBU. Also, chilli sauce served in a disposable pipette is all kinds of wrong.

jevoudrais · 10/01/2016 17:19

YANBU. I had a burger on a board with chips in a bucket. I managed to drip all over the table and I'm quite a tidy eater!

My DM was also recently served a prawn cocktail in a champagne flute.

I love chips in a bucket.

BerylStreep · 10/01/2016 17:29

I hate it. I just want a plate, and have sent food back before to be put on one.
