Or am I being too pedantic? Grin

The school newsletter usually has a few typos, but this week the head teacher's letter but had about 8 comma splices. I winced every time.

Wibu to email her - we are acquaintances out of school - and let her know in a friendly way? I don't know if the office staff type it or she does...

Examples are

We love learning in our school, this week I was delighted to see x and y...

I hope you enjoyed the Xmas service, many thanks to the vicar...

Thank you for all your cards and Christmas gifts, we do appreciate them...

Jellyfrizz Grin

I'd recommend the Police and Social Services too while we're at it. Just to make sure its thoroughly dealt with. That head should be sacked.

PollyPerky · 08/01/2016 21:14

I think this is tricky and some of you are giving the OP a hard time.

Comma 'splices' is in fact a new term. It wasn't around years ago when I taught English.

I think it's disappointing to say the least that a head teacher doesn't know how to use a full stop. It is very basic punctuation.

I lost count of the errors in my DCs' school reports etc when they were at primary and sec school- but mainly primary. Apostrophes in the wrong place, homophones incorrect, punctuation....

I never pointed them out but it did lose me respect for their teachers and made me wonder how on earth they could teach literacy.

I think if a child was reading the letters I'd have to say something. If the letter is only read by parents then leave it. It might be something to raise with the governors but maybe anon unless you want to be hated.

MistressMerryWeather · 08/01/2016 21:16

Holy Jesus, I appear to be a rampant splicer. Blush

I think I just spliced actually.

Can I get some help?

redbinneo · 08/01/2016 21:16

OP
WTF is a comma splice?
I'm very interested in your use of the word "but" twice in the same sentence.
People in glass houses etc.

Hassled · 08/01/2016 21:19

I knew them as "run-on sentences" - have never heard the term comma splice, although I share your dislike for them.

MistressMerryWeather · 08/01/2016 21:19

Actually us comma splicers could all rebel against the man.

Form a little group.

Call it The Splice Girls.

Moln · 08/01/2016 21:21

I fear there is no help that can save you MistressMerryWeather. You shall be locked into a dungeon with the headmistress of the OP's school and thrashed monthly.

shinynewusername · 08/01/2016 21:21

'Comma splice' is an Americanism, I think. Not sure we called the rule before we adopted it,* my teachers just used to red-pen errant commas.

*deliberately provocative Grin

MistressMerryWeather · 08/01/2016 21:22

Bugger the dungeon!

I'm now Merry Splice.

MistressMerryWeather · 08/01/2016 21:23

Or

Merry, Splice.

Moln · 08/01/2016 21:23

Are we going to wear platforms? What can my name be?!

Moln · 08/01/2016 21:24

OP will be Pedantic Splice.

MistressMerryWeather · 08/01/2016 21:25

Moln, Splice.

You can be the moley one.

DadWasHere · 08/01/2016 21:27

Teacher's = Teacher is. Also, your extra but, Also, 8 is poor form, you are suposed to right numbers under ten as words- eight, not numerals.

In summary, Irony, your defining it, also ,

AlisonWunderland · 08/01/2016 21:29

I think it's a rule that any comment which complains about grammar or spelling MUST contain a mistake too.

JasperDamerel · 08/01/2016 21:30

I would wince and judge, but not say anything.

Pipbin · 08/01/2016 21:30

The three dots at the end of a sentence are an ellipsis, the OP is complaing about the comma in the middle of the sentence.

Not picking up this poster in the slightest, but can some explain why the above sentence isn't a comma splice.

It is Pipin.

Also 'teacher's' in the OP is correct. Sorry DadWasHere.

Orda1 · 08/01/2016 21:33

I have never heard of a comma splice. I am only using full stops because I'm scared to splice.

I'm still not sure I understand.

Frankly it sounds like a load of shit to me

Op. You're a twat.

HTH

Hassled · 08/01/2016 21:39

DadWasHere - the letter belonged to the teacher. It's a possessive apostrophe, unlike the one I just used which indicates "it is". You're wrong; OP is right.
