to be annoyed at XH about NITS?

DD2 is 6 and very active, so we've been fighting a minor nit infestation for a few weeks. She won't sit still to be combed so it has been as much as we (me and my mum) can do with bribery and even holding her still for the worst bits. She has had a really short haircut and we have tried loads of different lotions, but just when we think they have gone we find more. We treat everyone in the house, wash pillowcases etc too.

Anyway, XH knows this and I asked him to keep an eye on it as the DDs went away for a week with him to his parents.

She has come back crawling with them, with smallish bits of her scalp red raw and bleeding and I think even some small bald patches. The poor thing must have been scratching away loads. She was screaming when I combed it at first so I had to go really really slowly. This time we used Vamousse, which we haven't used before so hopefully it will be the magic cure finally.

I'm really annoyed at him. Yes, it is possible that she had them when she went - I couldn't see any but they have been coming back again and again so there were probably eggs or something. But he must have noticed the state of her head. I got them back just beofr bedtime one night, then took them for a day out the next day and immediately bought the vamousse when I spotted one crawling on her head and her scratching.

He has had to be told to make sure the girls' hair is brushed before, after he wasn't bothering (at the time they both had long hair)

Also: HELP! NITS! Any tips are welcome. I hate the little buggers.

Derbac, (?) works. I found it better than Hedrin. Which did naff all.

Spent most of the Christmas holidays nit combing me and dd. We kept passing them back to each other. How, God only knows, we washed the bedding each time. Used separate towels etc.

We are really struggling here with nits again. The school sent out a message this morning about it.

I tried Vamousse the other day left it on for ages, buggers were still moving.

So every two days I just cover in conditioner and nitty gritty.

GHDs are good for the eggs but the lice all go and sit at the top of the scalp where you can't straighten.

Horrible things!!

Just use shampoo, lather up and leave it on for 5 minutes, then they suffocate and comb out really easily. Repeat every 3 days.

You dont need to use anything else.

Hedrin - works for us (3 girls long thick hair)

With the once stuff put shampoo on before wetting it and lather it up - works much better and washes out easily

Wolfiefan · 06/01/2016 10:04

Comb. Comb. Comb. Every three days. Religiously. For 21 days.
We used hedrin once a week too. (The one you leave on overnight.)
She needs to sit still. Sorry.

BiddyPop · 06/01/2016 10:06

We use full marks or Hedrin and leave it on for ages (like an hour). While it's in, I use a nitty gritty comb.

When washing, we use tea tree oil in the conditioner.

And when we get an outbreak, we treat for at least 3 weeks in a row, until the second last treatment has no apparent nits, and then 1 more for any eggs I might have missed.

I just stick DD in front of the tv, or now the xbox, or a decent colouring book, or a lego set, while I get on with the combing. Something for her to watch or do while sitting there.

It's the combing that is the nit/louse buster - the chemicals are secondary. You can cover them with Hedrin or whatever daily but if you don't comb to remove eggs and lice you are facing a losing battle. The chemicals can kill the live lice but doesn't get 100% of the eggs (which is the nit) so you have to comb whether she likes it or not.

Bribe, blackmail or sedate her (joke! Grin ) but ensure you comb every 2-3 days at least.

Here is a suggested eradication by combing programme

Includes info on lifecycle of lice.

Dd was reinfected by the same child repeatedly in reception you could see the poor girls hair crawling I was spending a fortune on nit removal stuff we were getting the a child in your year group has nits text twice a week...
I had the girl round for a play date dd wasn't keen but agreed as shr said thr girl was scraching all yhe time. I text her mum that I had found nits in my dd hair and was going to treat it shall I do her dd as well.... :-). Mum agreed just in case....
She had never had her hair nit combed before. We had her again a week later 'for tea' and not checked again all clear.

Never got another text in reception it seems she was the one spreading it about.

Girls are still friends now ;-)

We like the robi comb which is electric and zaps them. You use it on dry hair and it's really easy. DS hates being nit combed but doesn't mind the robi comb as it's really quick.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 06/01/2016 16:22

twinkle

That's what I do when there is a child who obviously is not being treated, weirdly the parents never decline my just in case measure.

Some of the mums I'm more familiar with look horror struck when I invite their child round and wisper "God have I missed the headlice" Grin
