To not buy a pram for baby?

starsshineinthecountry · 04/01/2016 22:04

I know it seems to be on the list of essentials but I have a lovely sling and a wrap and don't really see me pushing a pram much. I have hardly any space, like walking in areas where pushing a pram would be difficult and want to keep costs down.

Is it worth buying one or can I get away without using one?

As far as waterproofing is concerned I have a close cocoon rain cover in case and a waterproof suit otherwise. Keep thinking about a babywearing coat but generally not bothered. Been caught in fairly rubbish weather and she's been fine

starsshineinthecountry · 05/01/2016 14:01

Thanks. :)

Bounced, would you be able to direct me to where I can buy a baby wearing coat?

I got mine from Kindercoat (a German company but the website has an English version too) as at the time I couldn't find a properly waterproof one in the UK. But that was 2011, I think there are more options now - if you start a thread about babywearing coats I'm sure you'll get some answers that are more up to date.

Jw35 · 05/01/2016 14:14

Yanbu but you might want a cheap umbrella style one at some point. Keep an open mind. It's lovely you want to carry baby, I loved using my sling Smile

BearFoxBear · 05/01/2016 14:14

We live in a flat on the 2nd floor. The pram either lived in the car, or the seat comes upstairs and the bases is left folded at the foot of the stairs. It's not a problem and I wouldn't have been without it.

starsshineinthecountry · 05/01/2016 14:18

Thanks Bounced :)

The pram would have to live in the boot of the car, there's nowhere to store it at home.

I guess this is your first. The pram comes in really handy from when they are about 4+ months. I found that our shopping increased ever so slightly and I carried around a couple of extra things that were easier to push than haul.

I also wholeheartedly recommend buying 2nd hand. You can get a fab stroller with air or foam tires for less than £200. While I don't use my stroller a lot there are times when I couldn't be without it which makes it a necessary purchase. I say that with DC who are 4 and 2. When the 4 year old is sick she is in the stroller.

starsshineinthecountry · 05/01/2016 14:22

£200 is an awful lot though, it really is Shock

Baby wearing coat - I had one of these www.vertbaudet.co.uk/3-in-1-maternity-parka-green-dark-solid.htm?ProductId=001000009&FiltreCouleur=6719&t=1

You don't need to get one yet (a pram) but see how you get on. If you do get one I would recommend a lightweight tiny fold thing like a Bugaboo Bee (or something similar) the bees resell well though I think.

I have had 3 sections and carrying a baby in a sling for any length of time at the start would have been tough for me.

Cockbollocks · 05/01/2016 14:31

Maybe go have a look at one of these www.mamasandpapas.com/product-joie-mirus-pushchair-bluebell/175488200/type-i/

Faces both ways, lies flat and pretty light. I have no experience of it but on paper looks good for the price, especially if it doesn't get used loads.

SkiptonLass2 · 05/01/2016 14:35

I've got one of these
www.liliputibabycarriers.com/babywearing-mama-coat
Very good in old weather and has pregnancy insert option too

starsshineinthecountry · 05/01/2016 14:40

It's still a lot for something that'll be consigned to the boot, though :) I wouldn't want to spend more than £30 if I do buy one.

It depends on your lifestyle really. We had one and used it daily for DD1 who didn't nap unless she was in the buggy. Converted it to a double when we had DD2 and still used it a lot. Then when DS was born the DDs were out of the pram and had to walk. And it was easier to hold the hand of each DD and sling DS than to use a buggy so it never got used. But how you live with 3 LOs is different to how you live with 1 LO. And we have a car and live in a small town. I do a reasonable amount of walking (school run of just under 1 mile each way so almost 4 miles on my day at home) but a walk to school and back is different to going to the shops (as a third child DS NEVER came to the shops with me). I do fancy an old lady shopper though, now I don't have the buggy to stick all my shopping into. Except I usually buy online now.

LarrytheCucumber · 05/01/2016 15:16

I had a sling for DC3 and we bought a cheap lie-back pushchair with raincover. I like the idea of a babywearing coat, but I just used DD's waterproof coat that she had had for Geography field trips.

Bounced · 05/01/2016 15:19

On coats, if you think you'll sling a lot then it's worth making sure you get one that works for back carries (the Verbaudet one looked like it just did front carries) as you may well want to put the baby / toddler on your back at some point.

I found that I back carried much more with my second, as it left my arms free to lift dd1 on to buses or rescue her on climbing frames etc.

NickyEds · 05/01/2016 15:34

I love both my buggy and my sling but ultimately I just could not be without a buggy. I need to put my babies down! I loved having a cuppa and some lunch whilst ds slept in his buggy. Ds was 19 months when dd was born and we used the sling (a Caboo-very comfy) a lot but in July it was hot. Clothes shopping in a sling is a pita, anything else shopping with a buggy is a pita!
We bought both of our buggies second hand, a Quinny Buzz for about £100 and a Phil and Teds double for £80. I think second hand buggy and sling library might be the way forward.

Artandco · 05/01/2016 16:32

Can you buy even a second hand buggy for £30?

Want2bSupermum · 05/01/2016 16:36

stars I get that £200 seems a lot but I'm looking at baby #3 and at this point it's a good price to pay for a stroller that will last you 4-5 years and that you can resell for close to that amount afterwards. You can buy for less and I have a Maclaren techno that I got for $12 (£8) but the basket is crap making it hard to carry more than a diaper bag and after 10 years the wheels are starting to go. A bugaboo bee is an awesome stroller that is well worth buying 2nd hand for £200 or less IMO. Also, we are in a small space. Our stroller is kept on a hook on the front door. Take a look at Amazon as they had a great selection on there.

Girlfriend36 · 05/01/2016 16:41

I wasted £350 on a pram that was hardly used, it was a complete PITA to fold up and took up the entire boot which was hopeless if going shopping or away for a few days.

In hindsight wish I had just bought a decent sling and a nice from birth buggy. If I ever have any more kids unlikely this is what i would do.

nutellacrumpet · 05/01/2016 16:41

I had 2 under 2 and never used one. They are now 4 and 2 and still have no need for a push chair. I actually hate the things.

starsshineinthecountry · 05/01/2016 16:43

Thanks, Bounced, you've been really helpful.

£200 really is a LOT, I could have another month off on maternity leave for that!

OP posts:
Iggi999 · 05/01/2016 16:53

Carpal tunnel syndrome with one DC meant I couldn't have put the sling on for six months. Sold it in the end. Dc2 I got a new one and we used it a lot, overall used the pram more than the sling though. I really think you don't have a clue till the get here what will suit them (and you). Though certainly good to practice sling tying before they come, though can be hard to do with a bump in the way!

Iggi999 · 05/01/2016 16:56

Nutella it's as daft to talk about "hating" pushchairs as it would be to say you hated slings.

Ellieboolou27 · 05/01/2016 17:03

I've got a four month old (and 3.5 year old) my 4 month old has been in her buggy a Hangul of times, I prefer to use the sling, less faff and no wheels through poo moments! I would suggest a buggy for when baby starts crawling though as they like to look around etc

purplemeggie · 05/01/2016 17:10

Skipton - I love that Liliputi coat - would it allow for one on the front, one on the back, or does it need to be either/or?
