To wish we could just enjoy the season we're in

Now that Christmas is over loads of people have been saying 'oh we won't feel it now until Summer' or telling me about the Summer holiday they've just booked. The Easter eggs will no doubt be on the shelves in a couple of weeks and Winter clothes will disappear from the racks about the same time to be replaced by floaty Summer stuff.

In late September Christmas cards and wrapping was starting to creep into the shops, in July we were being bombarded with Back to School merchandise and so on and so on.

AIBU to wish we could enjoy each season for itself, instead of being constantly hassled and shoved forward mentally to the next one?

I'm sick of wearing the same damn clothes year round.

I used to pack my 'winter stuff' away in spring and get my 'summer stuff' out. (not enough wardrobe space for it all out at once). I used to look forward to the change over which ever way it was going. Snuggley jumpers and big warm coats/vest dresses, halternecks and swingy skirts.

These last two years i seem to have lived in the same light weight long sleeved tops, with a short skirt and opaques or jeans. Never hot or cold enough to bother with anything bloody different. So boring!

I grew up in a country, where as far as I can remember, the clothes stocked in shops didn't vary by season. I was very confused, as a newly arrived immigrant, to find M&S selling summer clothes when the weather was cold, and to be told that I'd have to wait until some time in the summer to buy the cold-weather clothes I wanted.

Yanbu... I bloody hate summer, made worse by the fact that it starts in January with all the clothes that come out only being able to be worn for a couple of weeks in August. My favourite season is autumn and didn't last long enough this year started in November as it was too warm to feel autumny before that and now its over in guttedAngry

Novembercocoa · 05/01/2016 10:47

I have a friend who had her decorations up the last Saturday in November, then whipped them down on Boxing Day because 'Christmas is over now'.

When I said I was looking for a couple of warm jumpers in the sales she said there wasn't much point in spending money on Winter clothes now because' we'll hardly know it until it's Summer.'

In August, when we're all getting into 'school's out' mood she's starting to talk about 'the clocks will be going back soon' and so on.

It drives me mad. It's like she can't just live in the moment but has to be always rushing ahead to something else.

I totally agree with you. Went to the supermarket this morning and in the entrance lobby there was a huge stand of "fresh from the in-store bakery" hot cross buns!!!! Give us a break - it is Jan 5th and Easter Sunday is on 27th March. Does anyone really want one now?
(On Boxing Day I cheerily asked the man in our local Co-op if they had any Easter eggs. He looked at me like I was a fool so I said "Oh, you did last year". Couldn't resist).

Mini eggs were out in my local shop on Christmas eve...

YANBU

Feeling sad about the tree coming down tomorrow but lots of January and february stuff to look forward to. Mulled wine isnt just for Christmas!

Mothers Day is about 8 weeks away, so I think it's perfectly valid for restaurants to advertise their Mothers Day menu.

I love every season except hot summers, I dog walk etc in all other weathers, but this rain, which my dog hates, has meant I've been stuck in.

Planning ahead doesn't stop you enjoying the here and now.

My local Tesco's have already got their Easter stuff out, next to the Christmas clearance food.

I know what I'm getting family for Easter already.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/01/2016 11:40

I hate it that the shops have everything in too early. The 'Back to School' stuff is in the shops before the schools break up FFS.

If you don't buy straight away, things sell out and I miss out because it never occurs to me to buy until I need things, eg - winter coats are in the shops in July/August, when I am looking for summer things, which have sold out and if I was looking for a winter coat, I would look in October/November when there is only the dregs left, usually in tiny and enormous sizes, which is no good to me as a size 12.

If I wanted a restaurant for Mothers Day, I wouldn't think about booking it until a few days before Mothers Day, why would you?

The shops and restaurants are forever in a race to get your money before you give it to someone else, which ends up in a never ending cycle of things getting earlier and earlier, until we get into the ridiculous situation that we are in now, where things are only available months before you actually need them and not available at all when you do need them. Angry.

I went shopping yesterday for stuff, after avoiding everywhere except food shops throughout December. And yes, the choco-tat is already there while the sparkly tat has not yet gone.

still, at least the annoying music has stopped and it is now possible to buy things of use as all the rubbish is mostly gone from the aisles.

good riddance to tat-mas for another 8 months.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/01/2016 12:04

They had Valentines Day stuff in Home Bargains yesterday.

Even that seems ridiculously early and doesn't need to be in the shops before February or at all as nothing says I Love You more than some tat from Home Bargains.

notquitehuman · 05/01/2016 13:29

The Home Bargains valentines stuff is hilarious though! I have a contest with DH to see who can buy the tackiest card imaginable.

How much planning does valentines day take FFS? One card, one small present, and a restaurant booking/M&S ready meal for the evening. Yeah better get an early jump on that one!

specialsubject · 05/01/2016 14:10

oh gosh yes, forgot about the hideous pink padded tat!

I would never take my mother to a restaurant on Mother's Day; high prices, crowded, crap food and service. We'll go the day after!

AuntieStella · 05/01/2016 14:19

Yes, the 'Back to School" before the summer term has ended is a really horrid and dispiriting thing.

Yes, anticipating the seasons has been a feature of retail for as long as I can remember, but I do think it has worsened.

It shouldn't, for example, be difficult to buy swimming costumes in August.

OTOH, even though I vastly prefer to shop in shops, at least stuff can be bought in line in the season you actually want to use/wear it. And I've found myself with no option but to do that. Last summer was notably bad - woollies and tweeds by the end of July in shops, just as the DC were breaking up and a I wanted to buy them the clothes for the hols.
