Saying crippled to describe a machine isn't acceptable

A work colleague has just described a machine as crippled. I'm a bit sensitive about this word but aibu to think even describing a machine as this has no place these days?

Yabu and silly. Getting offended by things like this is pointless when there are so many things in the world that are already genuinely offensive. It muddies the waters if we start getting offended by every little thing.

Crippled in itself is not an offensive term.

My life has been crippled by debt since I ran up £50k on credit cards. Ok use.

You look like a right cripple with that cast on. Not ok.

I totally agree itsANewDay. It's so irritating when drama llamas go around inventing reasons to take offense at things, and deliberately working themselves up into a paddy over them.

LurkingHusband · 04/01/2016 14:14

Offence in perspective

It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what.

ComposHatComesBack · 04/01/2016 14:37

I don't go out looking to offend people, that would be stupid. If someone finds something I said offensive and can explain why they think the term I've used demeans, patronises or offends than I'll happily stop using it. Saying something is 'offensive' means nothing.

What is the PC term for describing a person who is crippled?

redjoker · 04/01/2016 14:45

I wouldn't even think to find this offensive- sorry!

Iggi999 · 04/01/2016 14:50

Ah, Stephen Fry has appeared!

Behooven · 04/01/2016 15:07

Where?

Asskicker · 04/01/2016 15:09

Compos that's exact the link I found after a minute of googling.

She has form for this

As someone who has decided to self-identify as Irish for the duration of this post, I find your post incredibly offensive.

*I think crippled as a verb is fine for humans and machines but the noun is more problematic.

Exactly this.

Person A is crippled with pain. Fine.
Person A is a cripple. Not fine.

Person B is gay. Fine.
Person B is a gay. Not fine.

Person C is black. Fine.
Person C is a black. Not fine.*

Thank you, finally, that's what I did mean. It was using the noun call a broken machine crippled. I'd feel differently if it was something done deliberately to limit it.

Anyway I've already rescinded.
