To think that ds's school shouldn't give projects over school holidays

My ds 9 has a project to do over the Christmas holidays. 10 + pages are expected.
My thoughts are that school holidays should be for relaxing and not for doing massive projects in year 4!
As this is the Christmas holidays we have lots planned including 3 days spent with family and then my ds is going to his dad's. As well as other days out etc it makes it hard to find time to fit project work in and make a decent job of it.
He is currently working on it now when what I want to do is curl up on the sofa with him and watch a festive film!
So AIBU ?

We rarely do homework. Home time is home time. In my oponion, if there is extra work to be done, the school should provide a homework club.
I understand the points about it creating self discipline etc, but there are other ways.
Im not going to make it my problem, also since i found out that the teachers dont mark it, ive cared even less.

In year 3, my kid was told if homework wasn't completed then kids stay in during lunch play to do it. That sanction was never carried out.

We do reading, because they enjoy it, and sometimes my youngest feels like doing his writing homework. We have times tables on the wall, a world map and a globe, spellings for the term are pinned to the door, and i will randomly ask... But there is no pressure. And i wont make them do pages of projects.

Already i see that they are learning some self discipline when it comes to academia, as they take it upon themselves to do it when they feel like it.... And i firmly believe when they are old enough to have a conscience about these things.... Im thinking Year 5 as that's when i remember school holding importance for myself, i know they can do it themselves.

I haven't read the whole thread.

Just came on to say that, as a primary teacher, no way would I want to come back to school in Jan to 30 10+ page projects to mark.

Also, in my experience, primary school children need a lot of guidance in researching and compiling projects. Much better to do this over a mixture of class time and homework. Set it solely as homework and it just turns into a headache for the parents. Those who want more homework over holidays tend to be the ones who want their children kept busy and out of their hair

I haven't read it all either but I work in an infant school.
My class teacher told the kids to go home, put their bag and shoes etc in a cupboard and go and play outside and have fun!
I quite like his style!

My dd is in yr 6 and thankfully doesn't have any homework. The term leading up to Christmas is exhausting for children and staff alike. Give them a break!

YANBU, OP. Holidays are for relaxing and you can practise skills without it seeming like homework - reading and following a recipe, but with half/double the ingredients, writing a diary, reading their favourite books and playing 'shops' with money to name a few.

My DD is in Year 4 and DS is in Reception. Neither have any homework set for the holidays, at all. In fact the HT has a school-wide rule that there will be no homework set over any weekend or holiday period. Her reasoning is she would hate for children to be worked-up and nervous about returning to school because they didn't have the time/resources/support to do the homework. She is bloody marvellous!

I agree with you OP. This is the xmas holidays. Kids need a break and so do the parents.
