AIBU to think that I'll be fine at the Trafford Centre?

Supposed to be nipping to the Trafford Centre tonight for a last few bits for Christmas. We live 15 minutes away.

I'm surprised to find that everyone I've mentioned it to has said 'Oh, I wouldn't go.' Each worried because of the terrorist threat. My mum and gran have actually asked me not to, because they will worry. My gran said to ring her when I get back if I do go, so that she knows I'm safe!

Am I missing something?? I have quite bad anxiety, worse at the moment as having a stressful time with DD's health problems, so I'm a bit upset by all of this scaremongering!

Who here would happily go?

shirking 3 people have told me to avoid the white rose centre on boxing day because they know someone who helped a woman up from a fall who told them to stay away on that day. It's utter bolony.

If we change the way we live and live in fear then they've won.

LittleLionMansMummy · 21/12/2015 16:26

The level of alert remains at severe meaning an attack is likely but there is no direct, imminent and specific threat - to the Trafford Centre, the Birmingham Bullring, Bluewater, Oxford Street or anywhere else! Seriously, some people seem to thrive on drama and scare mongering. Terrorism and the threat of terrorism is of course very real, but some people need to get some perspective.

Dad was in West Yorkshire police. They used to get these calls all the time in December.

Several a day.

I am shocked how many people believe it.

I thought about going to the Trafford Centre tonight but then thought better of it.

I really can't be arsec with queues.

I think the big shopping centres are probably safer than usual at the moment because they're being watched so closely & are on such high alert.

My DSs school did a trip to a big, central London tourist location a couple of weeks ago and several people kept their kids home. It's such a shame. Terrorists - job done. DH goes to London most days for work as well. I'd be lying if I said I had never thought to worry but we both believe that you shouldn't change your behaviour because of this stuff.

wasabipeanut · 21/12/2015 16:51

All those stupid warnings are so offensive to Muslims as well. The idea that they get some sort of advance warning of attack is vile. IS would slaughter them as indiscriminately as they would anyone else Sad

enderwoman · 21/12/2015 16:55

I went to the local shopping centre and parking was the only problem.

^ this.

It is also the same level as it has been gorgeous many many months

I'd be worried about parking, but also living 15mins away I nip there about 9.30pm when most people are leaving!

ZenNudist · 21/12/2015 17:33

I went this morning. Just nipped in as it's my local shops. As I was leaving it was getting crazy. I had my usual strategy to get in, parked and out and drove off smugly without getting too stuck in traffic or taking ages to get parked.

Never occurred to me to worry about terrorism Confused

It might not be too bad tonight. Just don't park where you might get stuck...

PirateSmile · 21/12/2015 17:35

I thought this thread would be about parking Grin

x2boys · 21/12/2015 17:53

My dad travelled to Cheadle from Bury today to see his sisters said the motorway going towardsthe Trafford Centre on his way home after 3 was chocka block .

hefzi · 21/12/2015 18:03

Could someone possibly start this rumour about my local supermarket on Christmas Eve, please? I've had an accident and struggling walking, so am leaving it as late as possible to get food in - but it would be much easier if it was quiet because everyone thought ISIS were after Asda Hmm

I personally hate the Trafford Centre and would avoid it like the plague - but not for this reason: PP who put the Lewis quote up had it perfectly right - we don't have control over these threats, but we do have control about how we respond to them. Shoulders back, head up and carry on with your original plans!

kippersmum · 21/12/2015 18:14

Trafford Centre terrifies me in many ways, but not due to a terrorist threat!

Personally I find the parking a nightmare & all the crowds horrible. Don't even mention the Asda opposite....

Hope you had a good trip.
