About unfair vet prices for prescription flea treatment?

It does sound petty as I write this as it's only over £7 - but I was irritated all the same!

I have two cats and they need flea/worm treatment, which is prescription only. I popped into our vets on Friday to buy some and was told the cats needed a free check up first as they'd not been seen in a year now, which was fine. I took them yesterday morning. All checked, they're in good health, similar weight and the vet can prescribe the same spot on treatment for both. Great.

The vet asked whether I wanted a 3 or 6 pack for them (to be used once a month) so I asked about prices. 3 pack = £26. 6 pack = £45. So I said a 6 pack. Went to the front desk to pay and collect and they asked for £90. A simple misunderstanding, so I apologised and said i'd only meant one six pack at the moment, and i'd be back in 3 months for more.

'But which cat are you treating?' asks the receptionist with a Hmm face. Both, I say - i'll obviously buy the 6 pack because it's cheaper and split it between them. Which is when the problem started. From this point, I was in the vets for another 25 minutes, arguing.

The receptionist said I couldn't do that because it was a prescription medication and only to be used by the specific animal it was prescribed to. If I wanted a 3 month supply, I should buy 2 x 3 month packs, costing £52, with one prescribed to each cat. I refused. The medication is the same. I could pick up a different brand 6 pack off the counter right now and go and use it for 6 different cats if I wanted to and the fact that this is a prescribed treatment is neither here nor there. The receptionist told me that legally, she could not sell me a prescribed 6 pack knowing it was to be used for two different animals and refused to sell me anything. The vet (also the practice manager) was called out at my request.

He told me the same as the receptionist and I argued the irrationality of this and said it seemed that it was a money making exercise only. He was very brusque and said that if they suspected I was using a cats medication for another cat, they held the right to ask us to remove the animals from the practice. And that by doing what i'd asked, their records would show only one cat as having received treatment, which was 'incorrect and dangerous for the animal'. I asked if they could not just put the 6 pack on DCat1's record, with a note to say only 3 months was being used, and a manual entry onto DCat2's records to say he'd had a 3 month treatment. No, they can't, their systems don't have that capability and would be incorrect. I told them (massively irritated by this point, but as polite as I could) that I didn't really care what their records said and that was not my problem.

I ended up saying, fine - i'll buy one 6 pack for DCat 1's use only. DCat2's fleas aren't that bad so i'll leave him for the minute. Obviously rubbish. After 5 more minutes of arguing, with lots of warnings that I was only to use the treatment for DCat1, the vet grudgingly sold me one 6-pack for £45.

WIBU? I know it was only over £7 and I could have just paid, but the principle of it really got me - and £7 is £7.

It's Advocate and definitely prescription only. We used to buy Frontline but switched on the advice of the vet (which i'm now doubting Hmm ) who said that fleas were becoming immune to Frontline and it's not as effective.

Ask for a written prescription then buy the medication online with the prescription. DH often writes prescriptions for people to buy online. You do need to pay for the prescription though and will most likely needs to pay for a consultation. Vets can't issue prescriptions unless the animal has been clinically assessed by them and can only issue prescriptions per individual animal. Lots of Vet Nurses can prescribe as well. Try and find a practice that holds clinics where Vet nurses see non emergency patients for flea treatments etc.

honeyroar · 20/12/2015 10:42

Your vet was right about that Summernights, fleas are becoming resistant to over the counter treatments and they're not worth the money. They don't work on my animals.

ASmallHenInItsLateForties · 20/12/2015 10:42

Pet Drugs Online are very good. I get my two cats their Stronghold from there but still have to get a script from the vet.

My local vet has become rather sniffy about this though and have hiked up the cost of a prescription from £7 to 12 a script Shock. When I queried it I got a frosty response. So I went elsewhere where the scripts were cheaper and everyone is friendlier.

Marynary · 20/12/2015 10:46

This rule would apply to human prescriptions and so I wouldn't be surprised if technically it applies to vet ones as well. It does seem ridiculous and jobs worthy for the vet practice to make a fuss about it considering the prescriptions are for cats though.

Wolfiefan · 20/12/2015 10:48

We have always bought a pack of six and shared it between the two cats. I have owned cats for 17 years and have used different vets in that time. Never a problem.
£90 for flea stuff. Bloody hell!

Marynary · 20/12/2015 10:48

Next time just tell them the prescription is for one of the cats and not the other. It will mean that their records are wrong but doesn't it really matter?

Marynary · 20/12/2015 10:49

doesn't does

Defnotsupergirl · 20/12/2015 10:50

The vets have the same rules as human prescription. It may not seem important on flea medication but if it was for something else and a pet owner was self diagnosing and sharing medication that could be a real problem. I see where you are coming from but I also know where they are too.

IcaMorgan · 20/12/2015 10:51

My vet sells me 2 six packs for 4 cats, 1 for under 4kg cats and one for over 4kg cats and just sends me a text when it's due each month. Which cat he sends the text to varies each month

BishopBrennansArse · 20/12/2015 10:53

This is why I adore my vet who puts the animals first. Not the money.
If meds can be sourced online cheaper they'll tell me. If it's something you can get for humans too (I've Lactulose) and is identical they'll tell me if I can get it cheaper from a pharmacy.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 20/12/2015 10:53

who said that fleas were becoming immune to Frontline and it's not as effective.

I asked my vet that months ago. She said it was rubbish.

MsMims · 20/12/2015 11:09

YANBU.

I wouldn't have given them a penny and gone elsewhere.

WorraLiberty · 20/12/2015 11:14

It's Advocate and definitely prescription only.We used to buy Frontline but switched on the advice of the vet (which i'm now doubting hmm ) who said that fleas were becoming immune to Frontline and it's not as effective.

That advice was spot on (ha! see what I did there?)

We always used Frontline for our dog. Then he got fleas last year and it just simply did not work any more.

Not only did we have to fork out more money for Advocate (excellent stuff!) but we had to wait a whole month for the Frontline to wear off, before we could use it.

A whole month of bathing him daily and picking the fuckers out of his fur.

I started a thread on here about it and loads of people said Frontline didn't work for them either now. If you Google it, it's a very common problem.

WorraLiberty · 20/12/2015 11:17

Whoops! Mean to say that your vet is definitely BU.

Mine just writes the prescription for the one animal, and makes a note on the computer that it was shared between the two.

Not a problem at all.

lozster · 20/12/2015 11:18

Oh yes - I've heard the same about frontline too plus that it is in 'certain areas' ... Difficult to know what to believe as (tempting fate) my moggy has never had the blighters despite the fact she was a stray then spent 3 months wild on the run from a cattery. Came back flea free.

Could still be worth googling some more - the specialist food my cat is on is so-called prescription only. I couldn't find it online but then my DH unearthed it.

My vet is lovely but unfortunately his prescriptions are expensive making sending them elsewhere to be fulfilled barely worth it.

Spilose · 20/12/2015 11:23

That is ridiculous. YANBU at all OP. The prescription and the vets records are entirely separate so there would be no issues there, they're just grabby

Janeymoo50 · 20/12/2015 11:29

I never get flea/worm treatment from the vets, Drontal etc can be purchased online.

Piratespoo · 20/12/2015 11:32

You can get flea treatment like frontline from pound Land!

laflaca · 20/12/2015 11:33

Op, YANBU. I would have walked out. Change your vet to someone with a better attitude. They sound horribly petty and moneygrabbing.

SuburbanRhonda · 20/12/2015 11:40

I buy flea treatment online from Medicanimal.

It is SO much cheaper than buying from the vet.

I also buy renal disease medication for one of my cats online and have cancelled her pet insurance as it had reached £50 a month. I pay the vet £10 for a six-month prescription for the meds and buy them online at less than half the vet price. I'm sure they don't like it but it is my right to shop around for the best value treatment for my pets.

Marynary · 20/12/2015 11:41

It may not seem important on flea medication but if it was for something else and a pet owner was self diagnosing and sharing medication that could be a real problem. I see where you are coming from but I also know where they are too.

Apart from the fact that this is just flea medication, OP isn't "self" diagnosing. The vet has made the diagnosis and recommended the medication for both cats. Therefore the is absolutely no safety issue with sharing the medication. I also can't see any situation where is would be "dangerous" for the vets records to be wrong.

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/12/2015 11:42

Yanbu.

surely it's perfectly simple to update records so that it's clear both cats are receiving the flea treatment. it's not like an injection or course of tablets that's been divided by two at the same time.

can they not put both cats names on it?

or he could have just given you the prescription.

awful attitude

BishopBrennansArse · 20/12/2015 11:43

We use Advantage for fleas which we buy online. Frontline stopped working here too.

VegetablEsoup · 20/12/2015 11:46

it can (and does) get dangerous if other prescription meds, like antibiotics for example are mis-prescribed and misused.
