AIBU to ask if giving Christmas cards is becoming a thing of the past?

My DM (89) buys about 50 cards and sends them to all sorts of friends from the past to 'keep in touch'.
I buy about 30 cards to send to people who will be upset not to receive one (DM, D Aunt etc) and a few friends from the past. I am in my 60s.
DD (39) doesn't buy any cards except for my DM.
If we are typical, then giving Christmas cards will die out before long.
Do you buy lots of cards, and how old are you?

I'm 41 and still send cards (probably about 40 in total) and we probably receive a similar number

I don't send them to colleagues or casual friends. Good friends & family only. I just buy multi packs, never gone in for the expensive individual ones.

I can't imagine stopping sending them altogether

HippyPottyMouth · 17/12/2015 21:58

I've sent about 70 including work colleagues and neighbours. We've had about 35 so far. I'm 35 and I love Christmas cards.

I send less than I used to.

Some cards are nice as decorations and I cut them up in the new year to use as gift tags the following Christmas.

FunkyPeacock · 17/12/2015 22:04

Yes - always cut them up in Jan too to use as gift tags the following year!

Handmade cards sort of count as art, though. So I am like you, larry, they seem very precious.
A friend of mums brings out every one of mums hand made cards every year as decorations. I like that.
Still don't want to send any cards myself any more :(

I love Christmas cards despite trying to be more green etc. I love sending them & getting them - receiving something in the post is so much nicer than a group post on Facebook. It takes more effort. They look great round the house. DD loves opening them and I remember the same as a child and asking the same kind of questions of my parents - "so Mum who are Janet & Roy".

However this year I have had a nightmare run up to Xmas and have hardly sent any. I feel pretty sad about this.Sad

I haven't sent any cards since I left primary school in 1994 so yes, it died out a long time ago for me!

A friend of mums brings out every one of mums hand made cards every year as decorations. Lovely idea. I am considering framing this one and putting it up in the spare bedroom because I like it so much.

I always write cards. Probably because it makes me really happy to receive them.

I did look around the office this morning through and realise there's only 6 client cards. When I started 5 years ago there were dozens!

I'm 43 and sent some to the relatives who would like to receive them as well as a few friends.

Normally I have them all written and ready to go on 1st December, but this year I thought I'd do the above, and then if I received any from people I hadn't sent one too, I'd swiftly get one in the post to them! But it has not happened. I know one friend generally sends hers to arrive on 24th December so I did send one to her because otherwise I might have been caught out.

It's tedious writing so many cards, and the postage is ludicrous. I'm not surprised that it is dying out. I used to like writing letters and had lots of penpals as a teenager, but I just don't have the patience anymore.
