To think this might ruin Christmas

I really can't stand listening to noisy eaters, I know I'm highly unreasonable but it actually makes me feel weird I get so angry I almost feel out of control or that I have to run away. My PIL eat sweets and nuts non stop really loudly for hours on end (literally hours) and as a result I'm dreading spending Christmas with them (Arghhh I'm horrible as they are both nice people) but being trapped in a living room with them makes me feel a bit violent Angry I'm normally very chilled out, I actually think I have some kind of problem...

Put some loud Christmas music on.
Or keep talking to them so they don't have time to eat.
Dh seems to eat cereal really noisily.

I have this. Makes mealtimes fun with 4 DC and a DH who sound like chimpanzees when eating. I quite often have to leave the table to 'away' to the front room to stop myself telling them off as I know rationally it's MY problem, they are not that terrible eaters, and I don't want them to get hang ups about it.

It is all part of my anxiety disorder though.

What I find odd is that when the DC were little I found their eating noises so cute. Loved the sound of little lips smacking, enjoying their food. When they turn about 5, the cuteness wears off and makes me stabby!

One of my DTSs does sometimes flounce from the table complaining that the way his brothers are eating make him feel sick too piece ofpurplesky

I get this too - the worst is my Dad, he has false teeth, so not only do you have the usual eating noise, I can hear his teeth clomping together - it gives me the rage so bad it's unreal.

DH does this awful thing when eating porridge where he scrapes the metal spoon against his teeth. OMFG! I literally have to leave the house!

I have found my people!! I cant stand eating or drinking noises (dd1 says I have noise issues!)
I have been known quite often to leave the table when someone is being gross. Luckily DD1 eats lovely and quietly (Dd2 is only one so her noises aren't on my radar yet)
The worst was when I went on a 3rd date with a lovely, lovely guy, really liked him but we went for food.... The noisy, mouth open, lip smacking, mmmmmm noises! Omg I couldn't cope - I swear it sounded like the bloody cookie monster on a binge and I just had to go!

OP I sympathise! My FIL eats really noisily and with his mouth open. It is disgusting but I have to suffer in silence. I think discreet earplugs are the answer for Christmas survival.

Thankfully I have yet to encounter a chorus of 'nom nom nom' around the dining table. I expect I would find it too much to bear and would see me reaching for the nearest shotgun.

Ooooohhhh not just me then. Id take the darkened room/migraine sorry ....... ipad/earphones sounds an ideal nignt in.

Put on nice Christmas music, and sit next to the CD player.

I can't watch my sister eat soup. She bares her teeth, bites the spoon then slurps it. Her teeth clang on the metal too.

Yoghurt are bad for me. When I was small my dad used to spend an age scraping the last bits off as noisily as possible to wind me up.

Pippin8 · 17/12/2015 19:22

I started a new job where everyone tries to sit & have lunch together & one person does this. She eats with her mouth open, talks with a mouthful of food & slurps a lot.

It gives me the rage. I hate it, but no-one else seems to notice. I've started going home for lunch or saying I need to go out to the shop.
