To not understand why we can afford to send Tim Peake into space whilst we are cutting essential services for UK citizens?

Just that really. I don't get it. Apparently we have no money for the NHS, police, care for the elderly etc but we can blow a shed load of money on this? Think the Gvt's priorities are skewed really badly. I have nothing against space exploration but surely basic needs should be met first? Or am I just naive...?

Maybe, OP, they will find out why cancer cells spread...........and thus find a cure for the cancer that is currently rapidly killing me.

Justanotherlurker · 15/12/2015 20:21

After reading your last post, I will agree with you that you are naive.

This one is one of the most impressive

Mine clearing technology but like you say op maybe they should of gave this a miss a kept a library open

HermioneWeasley · 15/12/2015 20:29

As well as inspiring a whole generation of children to be interested in physics and engineering. An absolute bargain frankly.

So what about the interest in STEM which will encourage lots of kids.

You are trying to score political points in the wrong area. A little research would show you that austerity has effected the space programme. We have a backlog of medical experiments backed up until 2030 because of the lack of government funded flights.

This includes ones who will make easier for millions of disabled and elderly people.

We need more scientific funding

Tamponlady · 15/12/2015 20:33

Also freezed dried food that keeps our army feed when out an about with out this our troops would not get the calories or vitamins they need to keep on in the 2nd word war are troops were in a awful sate on the front partly due to there diet

JessicasRabbit · 15/12/2015 20:33

hermione, I teach physics. Studying space gets the kids really excited. Watching the live rocket launch today in class was awesome. I think hope and excitement for young people are both hugely important.

op, it's not an either / or situation. We are one of the richest countries in the world. We can afford to feed the hungry AND inspire people.

Things can only get better though Hmm

laughingatweather · 15/12/2015 20:47

Different budgets for different things.

It really is as simple as that. And if we all got to say what we think is 'valuable' or 'important' then the entire system of welfare, defence, research or culture would collapse.

I work in a very niche area of MH that most people either don't believe in or don't give a shit about because it doesn't affect them.

Is it important in comparison to NHS cancer treatment?. No. No-one will directly die of it. Is it an immediate MH crisis?. No.

Does extensive research say the treatment reduces other MH input, reduce primary care appts, reduce criminal offending?. Yes. Does that save money in overall government spending?. Yes.

How low would it be on 'worthy causes' lists for the majority of voters and even some commissioners of health care?. Really low.

We often as the general public, don't have enough understanding of why things are funded. Doesn't mean it's always bollocks or a waste of money.

And will you be buying all those who the are reliant on jobs up in Scotland there weekly shop

It's not as simple as let's not have it just like it's not as simple as let's not have another runway in Heathrow

LittlestLightOnTheTree · 15/12/2015 20:47

We are taking in thousands of refugees so money isn't a huge problem. Just the budgets.

Tamponlady · 15/12/2015 20:49

Thing is eveyone has Diffrent lists of what's important
