I cycle home from work. This evening I was almost got run off the road by a large dark dog charging across a busy road. It then charged back into a car with an almighty crunch but kept running. The car sounded like it would have significant damage.

Now I don't know dogs but it was large, dark and the shadow I saw looked like an aggressive breed. Considering my chances against a hurt, angry dog I pegged it home and rang the police from there.

Now it may not be an offence to have your dog on the loose causing significant damage, but I am a witness to an RTA. Police are Not Interested. They "Can't" take a report down because they don't have the form I'd have to go into a police station for that, but that's impossible for me (no longer have a front desk at my police station, so they use the council offices which are only open when I have to be at work).

AIBU to have bothered?

Is it possible they though you were taking the mick.

My dad and brother have both been in the police. There was a running joke about a big black dog. It was the cause of most police car accidents.

Never shit driving or not paying attention. The big black dog cause quite a few accidents in my dad thirty odd years.
Did you call 101 or flag down a PC?

I once called the police when a man in pjs was wandering in the dual carriageway shouting at passing cars (i was on a motorbike, slowed .... because he was in the road and he'd tried to grab my arm). The police said i was wasting their time, there were no other reports etc. The next day there was a police incident sign up as he'd been badly injured . The police only react, I don't think they'd respond to an RTA unless it was blocking the road.

Called 101 - no police at the incident as I didn't hang around.
It wasn't shit driving, driver didn't stand a chance.

I don't think it was about taking the mick - there was some long explanation about how they can't take reports of RTAs on the 101 line 'cos they don't have the necessary form, but anything else ...

You can file reports online. I reported a crime to the local council place where we are also meant to now. A random council worker jotted it down on a scrap of card. I was doubtful it would be processed so asked my friend who works for the police and she said to report it online.

I rang 101 for a similar matter - runaway dog in a busy main road - and the policeman I spoke to was interested and took details but unfortunately was based in the next city over so had no idea of the location despite me telling him it was a big main road, naming the road, naming various landmarks that were nearby for him to pass onto local police etc...

If I'd spoken to someone in my city, they'd have known exactly where I meant and would have understood how incredibly serious it was.

That's ridiculous...how can they not have the right form on their computer.

And in the 2 city centres that are nearby.

I get that, this isn't the norm anymore, but it does still happen. How do I know the state of policing in the OPs area?

poor dog. It might have been loose, we had a big black dog loose in our area last week, it had run away from its walker.

I couldn't get the police to take a report on the man who rear-ended me on the motorway then gave false insurance details before leaving the scene. Apparently because he gave me some details rather than no details it wasn't a crime. Next time I ram somebody I shall tell them my name is Mickey Mouse and the good lord almightly is my insurance company.
