to BF my baby in baby-carrier when out and about?

I've just got him back on breast after a long difficult battle (he was refusing it in favour of bottles!)

He feeds often as he's getting the hang of it again (sometimes he's on for over an hour, or has several short feeds in an hour).
When I go out I put him in baby Bjorn carrier with straps adjusted so he can feed. I wear a top and bra I can pull down so as soon as he starts showing hunger cues I get a breast out and offer it while he's in carrier. Sometimes he takes a while to latch or stay latched and likes to stop and start, so I leave him to it while I get on with my day (whether I'm in Tesco, on bus/train, walking in street, in restaurant etc). I thought I was being discreet (you can't see much unless looking from above or the side as carrier has a high head-rest) but my mum is horrified! She said its socially unacceptable to 'walk around with your breast out' and thinks I should stop and find a discreet corner to BF. However if I did this I would spend most of the day sitting in 'discreet corners'!

AIBU to carry on BF in this way?

Yanbu but I can't work this in my connecta as baby is too high up-tips please!!

MEgirl · 14/12/2015 23:27

Keep going, but would second the suggestion of a different sling. My experience is of using a Maya Wrap. I once went through a supermarket checkout with a fully trolly load and the cashier didn't even realise that I was carrying a baby, never mind feeding while packing.

SweetTeaVodka · 15/12/2015 02:15

Mikado, you just loosen the straps enough to wriggle baby down a bit, and reposition and retighten once done. You need to make sure you always put baby back up high after and keep an eye on their breathing/airway while they're feeding as the lower position makes it easier for them to slip into a position where they asphyxiate. It's easier the older the baby gets as they can help you a bit haha!

AmusingSpoonerism · 15/12/2015 02:18

I do it all the time.

TheGruffaloFish · 15/12/2015 06:11

I used to feed DD when she was in the ergo all the time. Very practical as I spend half my life waiting for buses!

bittapitta · 15/12/2015 06:16

Yanbu but the baby Bjorn is not a subtle or comfy carrier to feed in IMO! Try an Ergo (similarly easy to put on for you) or Caboo (the latter if he is still small)

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 15/12/2015 10:47

Absolutely keep doing it. I fed DD anywhere and everywhere in pretty much every form of carrier and sling there is (I am a bit of a sling addict!). I know you didn't ask about this, but you may find a mei tai easier for long feeding sessions on the move. I have an ergo which is great, but I do find that prolonged feeding is less comfortable in it - a mei tai can be adjusted better for a more comfortable feed and there are so many colours and designs to choose from!

MySordidCakeSecret · 15/12/2015 10:59

Of course yanbu! i'd also recommend an ergonomic carrier or ring sling though they're easier to adjust ad better for baby too.

WomanScorned · 15/12/2015 11:11

Just chiming in to echo pp's. I did it all the time - the only person who ever reacted negatively was my mum (but, then, she reacted negatively to pretty much everything else I did with him...)Hmm
I had several carriers, and found a wrap, ring sling or mei tai the most adjustable/easiest carriers to feed in.
Congratulations on re-establishing bf'ing, btw.
My teenage son would quite happily wander around with us, while his brother was feeding.

CottonSock · 15/12/2015 11:14

Wish I could have done it!

Doublebubblebubble · 15/12/2015 11:21

I would love to - genuinely dont know how to in my sling (its a material one and whilst I'm sure you can I just don't know how to tie it for a good bf position) carry on op x

BertieBotts · 15/12/2015 11:25

Double you should be able to find instructions if you google :)

Doublebubblebubble · 15/12/2015 11:28

Aw okay that would be logical lol 8 weeks pp and that hadn't occurred to me lol damn you baby brain

Sallyingforth · 15/12/2015 11:34

She said its socially unacceptable to 'walk around with your breast out' = Bollocks.

It takes just four words to answer all such comments:

"Baby hungry, baby feeds".

BertieBotts · 15/12/2015 12:01

Another option is to look for a Sling Meet in your area, they usually have experienced bods who can show you how to feed in basically any sling, it's like magic! Congratulations on your newborn.

blueturtle6 · 15/12/2015 14:55

Nope so long as you feel comfy and sounds like boob is covered so what's issue, I once feed walking around the shops just holding dc. No one batted an eyelid.
